The little fish you were seeing are Alewives, which is an invasive species on the Great Lakes.

Yes! That’s it! A boy that looked about 11 told me that at the launch and I couldn’t remember. Surprisingly, no water foul eating them.

@@Redkayaklady Back in the 1959s & 60s, pink salmon we planted in the lakes to help control the Alewive populations. This seems to be a heavy year for them, but nothing like I remember back in the mid60s.

@@Redkayaklady many years ago way before I was even thinking about retirement a very wise person gave me two pieces of advice 1) don’t wait to retire until you have enough money because that day will never come. 2) after retirement you’ve got to have something to do, maybe a part time job or a hobby etc. because if you don’t you’ll just sit at home and die early.

I don't know if i ever asked you this....but, do you prefer these new kayak launch over launching from land or sand? I haven't used one yet and curious to know what you thought.
@Redkayaklady5 ай бұрын
@@phillyjoejones5161 Historically, I have always preferred setting my boat next to a dock and entering my boat (while staying dry). However I would prefer this over a beach launch, particularly if the water is super gross! That being said, it also depends on which boat I’m using and the type of kayak launch. If I’m using a polyethylene rotomold boat, they are handy. Those boats are tougher. If I have my Kevlar boat, I usually don’t like to drag them on ANYTHING. Most of these launches are static with no moving parts. This particular one had very nice rollers (that actually worked) so I wasn’t dragging the fragile material on plastic. Even so a sea kayak tends to be too long for these. I do think they are a huge benefit to those new to paddling that may not be used to getting in and out or for those that have mobility challenges. I will admit to finding them handy recovering from knee replacement.

It Looked like there were TWO Different size kayaks on the car top at one point. Over the years the 13 -15 foot sizes served well to do some Lake and also Plenty of river outings around Wisconsin. From the Smallest more secluded offerings to some like what you as well are posting. WHY (I) Am stating this ? The bigger the boat the MORE it takes to get it in the remote areas. The REI Choice which was being offered by many at the time. Laacke and Joys who for what seemed a lifetime was holding a KAYAK Event on the Milwaukee River by its then Downtown Warehouse location. WOULD SUGGEST looking into the Upper and Lower lake Nemahbin , Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, ROCK, along with other State park locations. PIKE LAKE (INDEED) gets plenty of activity. Well known for its Wind Surfing Capabilities. Had at one point been checking off both large and small destinations. NORTH Lake is a Stones throw away between a few others out there. Its not the SIZE as much as the Freedom aspect. MORE Beaches means a lot of HUMAN traffic to be louder and less inviting ( IN ) MY experiences. DELAFIELD, WEST BEND, When Looking at the maps? SOME places will give you a few different options. So, Again ( GETTING ) out there was the reason this conversation is here. I could tell you PLENTY of Interesting encounters. Including one where the Carp and such got washed up into a few backyards during near Flooding ( HIGH WATER ) Marks. Today is already the last full week of July 2024. Some folks say the Height of Summer. With the amount of rains and storms its can feel like its just getting started !?!??! As for LOADING the BIG 17 footer ?? Do what it is works BEST for you. Girls or Guys are not Separated by size alone. USING what YOU GOT !!! ONES Head ( Brain ) is way more then a HAT Rack or was it a Display case for Glasses and Such? WHO Can remember when the sun is trying to Turn the skin many shades of RED on any given day? Sun or Clouds ( WINTER ) is the worse to forget Sunblock as well.

@@mcldotcom I may have had two boats with me that day. The three of my five I use primarily are 12’, 14’ and 17.5’. I still love my original Perception Tribute 12’ boat. (I just used it over the weekend at The Kickapoo River) I like my 14’ Current Designs Vision too. That one has a rudder like the 17’ boat but like the 12’, it’s a rotomolded polyethylene. Other than length, I wouldn’t bring my 17’ boat to a lot of places for fear of getting scratched on rocks, logs etc. since it’s Kevlar. I have been to many of the places you’ve mentioned, but always looking for new suggestions. Thanks for watching!
