Hellooo 👋🏻
I'm super stoked to get this video out there! Alison Kaplan is a dear friend of mine. She is an all-around BADASS rock climber 🧗🏻‍♀️, runner 🏃🏻‍♀️, swimmer 🏊🏻‍♀️, biker 🚴🏻‍♀️, AND she corrects the grammar on my Instagram posts 👩🏻‍🏫! Alison has been living in her Honda Odessy (Homer) 🚙 for a little over 2 years now and spends most of her time rock climbing. She is hilarious and I was giggling to myself the entire time I was editing this video.
I met Alison in March of 2017 when I was just getting in to rock climbing. She took me under her wing and did the grueling work of taking me out on TONS of single and multi-pitch climbs in Yosemite 🏞Shenanigans included me untying myself from the rope on pitch 2 of a climb, building a triangle of death anchor, and forgetting to untie the tagline from the bag at the base of a climb. She taught me everything I know about dirtbagging (and purple cabbage) and we would all be a little better if we listened to her sage advice.

I like how you built it out. I've played with it a lot. Currently I changed and went with a small single mattress on top of milk crates, giving me a foot to one side. Weekend camper. Camping in my 18 wheeler seems so luxurious sometimes :D

Woahh Alison....you had me at 'red/purple cabbage' =) I cook it weekly in my grandmothers Griswold iron skillet, using her recipe, nom nom nom. In the fall i bury several heads of cabbage on my farm in the Appalachians...then dig them up in the Spring for an Awe-Mazing slaw recipe : ) Anyhoo, you girl have an open invitation to camp on my farm on the New River, near Boone NC anytime!! ps: I Always keep a sturdy coathanger in my Yukon...and one on the outside i hide in the bumper when i leave my keys inside, haha....its the Eagle Scout in me.

As a sole proprietor, working and living out of her van, should translate to a lot of tax credits. Any expense on the vehicle, even if not 100% for business purposes only, should take down the tax liability significantly. Should...I dont know if it actually does.
@KayaLindsay
@KayaLindsay 6 жыл бұрын
It does! That's what I do actually. It only reduces the amount you pay on it by a percentage though. I can't remember if it's 40% or 50%...

Great video! I have a Honda Odyssey that I was thinking of converting into a mini camper. My questions are about the rooftop cargo carrier. How does it affect your gas mileage and does it create a lot of wind noise? And I eat red cabbage all the time. It does keep forever. Thanks. Continued safe travels to you both.
@KayaLindsay
@KayaLindsay 6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Not sure how it affects Allisons mileage. I'll text her and ask!
@KayaLindsay
@KayaLindsay 6 жыл бұрын
She says she gets 21mpg and it's pretty quiet to drive, she hasn't noticed anything about the gas mileage going down since adding the box.

How do you stay in Yosemite valley in your van for a month? Do you need a camping spot or are you in one of the parking lots? Do you just lie low when the rangers come around?
@go-dog-go
@go-dog-go 6 жыл бұрын
Kaya.....i've found a 10-12 passenger 'short bus' im converting during this Winter. Im putting in a small kitchen, bath, showee, etc in.....I've done some welding and building a frame for 300W that will clip and 'roll out' on top, plus a rack for storage. Question: I Know people that have 'Skoolies' out there, But do you s@@ many where your hang and climb and Are they "Pretty mobile' for the terrain?? State Parks, roads are one thing.....dessert, canyons, etc are Another. Thx, i'll hang up and listen to your answer off the air, haha. Gary~
@KayaLindsay
@KayaLindsay 6 жыл бұрын
I think the skoolies are cool but not super practical for cheap and efficient travel. They're really expensive to drive, hard to park and super slow. I think skoolies are better for stationary vanlife builds. OR if you want to put like 10 people in them and have everyone split the gas.

About planning. I saw a friend who was going to law school, who had a tee shirt which read "I refuse to plan my day out ahead of time, because if I do something bad, it's premeditated"

"It's not big but it's mine" explains just about everything. Oh, also "from california". "I subsisted on hummus and baguettes". That sounds like a life ... oh never mind. Van life people are just very different. "Dirtbagging". Ah, makes sense now...
