exclusive | SY - Feel The Rhythm | Rawax
Returning to Rawax for a third time, SY flexes his electronic muscles again, hitting home with a four-tracker of superb beats for the world's dancefloors. His "Feel Love EP" sits right in the centre of the "is it old or is it new?"-category, leaning back with references to older tracks, whilst also leaning forward with crisp, tight production, as it to be expected on SY's releases.
The EP opener is "Feel The Rhythm" which, to these ears, has a chunky riff which is giving an audio wink to the early 90s rave classic 'Hardcore Uproar'. This is no bad thing, as the energy is there from the start, so as the track progresses into a stabby keys riff, also reminiscent of the aforementioned rave track, we're nestled right in the heart of the dancefloor, which is exactly where this track is aimed. And it's on target, no messing around! A great punchy start to the EP right here.
We then move onto "Is It Love (Amore Mix)", which is a more subtle affair, but equally floor-friendly. A staccato bass riff pulls you into the groove, softly pulsing bleeps give a more spacey feel in the track, with knocking perc sounds coming together to conjure a wonderfully deep and warm cut which would sound pretty much spot-on at whatever time you dropped it.
Flipping the 12" over, we're greeted by "Feel (Longevity Mix)", which ups the BPM slightly and comes direct with a heavier thumping kick, which has rattling percussion swimming around it. The nagging bassline is joined by neatly placed synths and pads, all coming together to create a vibe which is both tough at the bottom end, but warm and floating at the top. Again this has hints which lean to the mid-90s, it definitely wouldn't have sounded out of place on a label such as Guerilla or Limbo - high praise indeed!
Closing the EP is the "Paradize Mix" of "Free", which kind of is a continuation of "Feel (Longevity Mix)", it basically takes the main percussion of the track, tweaks them slightly, then adds a vibey organ riff into the groove, replacing the softer synths and pads from it. This gives a slightly more angular sound from the flowing "Longevity Mix", but loses nothing in terms of club-friendliness in its transition.
As with previous SY releases, "Feel Love" is a fully-formed, dancefloor-friendly EP, which has tracks which will work in both early and later sets alike, something which has to be applauded.
