As an animation student, the main thing we are taught to consider is “why make it an animation instead of a live action?” Disney used to keep this in mind with their old movies and made sure that there was purpose to the animation. It’s why every live action Disney does will struggle.

3:19 Beauty and the Beast was already pretty progressive in its original version. Belle was a smart, capable, feminine character who went against societal norms. She longed to be more than just a love interest. Gaston was basically the embodiment of that whole “toxic masculinity” thing which pretend progressives like to bash so much. While the Beast showed a healthier version of masculinity, Gaston’s ego led to him becoming an oppressive control freak who rallied the people against a mostly innocent man, in order to force Belle into choosing him as a love interest. He became the real beast. All of this was done with more subtlety and grace than the newer version.

I really liked "Cinderella" for the fact that it allowed itself to be/remain a fairytale, the strengths of the story being fleshed-out while still staying on an archetypal level. Which is the basic reason for the existence & popularity of myths & fairytales, outside of time & culture, in the first place. Roles that serve as a symbolic outline for everyone finding more or less of themselves & others within them. Whatever name, race, gender or sexuality you attach to them, it wouldn't change the plot & overall message of the story at all. This is what all the other movies suffer from. There is zero room for one's own interpretation or identification of & with the supposed archetypes, respectively. Instead, the writers pre-chew every trait of a character on the basis of what they think a Western society, a.k.a. "Twitter", wants them to be, spitting out a formulaic, dull CGI pigeonhole of a movie. Denying all imaginative room for self-identification with the feelings & narrative arc for anybody who's in any form or way not like the protagonists in question. What more than often remains, is no other interpretive framework than a hyper-literal, heteronormative one - in turn taking away all the charme & century-old appeal that these stories have had for people of all ages, colors & identities. Instead of their feigned "contemporary modernizations", they create a completely static yet ephemeral, gutted shadow of a story, giving nobody nothing but a stale taste instead of timeless Disney magic.

Since this live action era is their new thing I just wish Disney would go back to the reimagine era instead of the shot for shot remake era. Alice in Wonderland was great so was Malificent and even Dumbo was pretty good for what it was. And the reason they were good was because we got to go back to a world we loved but got a new story. Disney already knows people love this style of storytelling I mean they have a very successful book series of this style aka the “What If” series where they reimagine classics such as ‘what if the kiss didn’t wake Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘what if Rapunzel’s mother was given the moon flower instead of the sun flower’. The only thing I disagree with you on is Emma Watson being 'fine' as Belle. As the BatB remake began the whole 'cash cow progressivism' trend, Emma Watson began the "let's cast a name over a talented actor who can handle the part" trend. Emma was an atrocious Belle. She acted like AI was beaming her onto a sound stage, and her singing as so bad they had to steal the autotuning from Cher's "Believe" to make the soundtrack palatable to dog ears. There were probably 20 other big name actresses who COULD sing who could do the role, and probably thousands more no-names who would have killed for a chance at the part.

I never understand why people on Twitter do fan castings when they hear a Disney live action of something is gonna be announced same thing with marvel because Disney they have a timeline and shedule on when things are released so when something is leaked or announced there most likely already have the casting done that’s why majority of live action casting be somone that never on a fan casting list because the movie already been casted or already been casted and filmed there just waiting to release it on shedule because some of these movies because of the effects and stuff take like maybe 2 or 3 years

Sad that the newer generations won't have their own "renaissance", new classics. Instead they have these soulless, dark and forgettable rehashes. At least they can stream the original versions. Creativity left Disney, it went to Dreamworks and the Spiderverse.

When Illumination can make a better movie out of an IP Disney legendarily fumbled 30 years ago, that speaks volumes.

The animators at Disney forgot how to 2d on the movie side; at least the tv side knows both 3D and 2d animation. But that’s still fucking stupid.

You know what's funny? Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmaking duo that was back then directing Solo: A Star Wars Story, had been fired from the project by Lucasfilm (on June 2017, I think). And they went on producing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (it won the Best Animated Feature Film at the 76th Golden Globe Awards) and its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Disney literally firing people that has the creativity in filmmaking, now look what Disney has become.

Even though I didn’t really like Maleficent (mostly because I am huge fan of the original Sleeping Beauty) I can at least respect that it tried to tell a new story. Beauty and the Beast is when I gave up on these remakes and all I can say is I’m glad I stopped watching them after. It’s annoying how people will say we are just “mean” and “close-minded” for not liking these shitty remakes Real shame that Halle Bailey’s talent is being wasted in the upcoming Little Mermaid remake.

Disney is so cgi obsessed. If they were to use old movie tech (puppets, models ect.) and create a new spin on the originals (like ouat or the alice remake) then disney could realy do something with a live action remake. I don't hate the concept of live action, IF it's done right. It's not been done right since alice.

I don’t agree with her about Aladdin (except the will smith part) but as a middle eastern/ Asian person, who isn’t white like you, we LOVED Aladdin. It was much needed. Especially since middle eastern/ south Asians are literally the least represented minorities in Hollywood.

A live action Stitch COULD work if you got someone like Chris Walas, the Chiodo Brothers, or Rick Baker. If anyone could pull off a live action Stitch, it'd be the people who made Gremlins and Critters.

At this point there is no originality to modern filmmaking. Where studios would rather go with what’s safe either in popular pop culture genres like comic book films or Star Wars, live action remakes or reboots, sequels of movies that came out years ago, or shameless cash grabs. I wanna see more movies from creators like Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Damien Chazelle, Robert Eggers, Alejandro G. Innaritu, Takashi Miike, Hayou Miyazaki, Mamoru Hosoda, Alfonso Curon, Ryan Coogler, Ridley Scott, and Jordan Peele. Many other directors who can direct and write good movies

It'll only be a matter of time before Encanto gets a live action remake as mentioned here. I think it's a given if a certain Disney animated property made a bunch of money at the box office It'll probably get The Treatment eventually down the line 😓. Or maybe they'll take a chance on a lesser successful animated movie just to see if that works instead 🤷♀️. Who knows at this point what the heck Disney is doing.

Disney is creatively bankrupt. Mulan was egregious and so is the little mermaid. They are completely soulless and awful. Terrible. Yet somehow they go on to make so much money.

As a life long The Little Mermaid fan, I can proudly say I won’t spend a DIME on this live action. The characters don’t look like a reflection of the animated film, so why would I? And they’re changing the lyrics to the songs and also modifying the plot. HELL NO. Disney is dead to me!

I'd be okay with the remakes, if they had any vision of creativity. Let's take the Broadway Lion King musical. Instead of freaky CGI lions, they did costumes *inspired* by the animals and characters. It gave a cool effect that didn't fall into the uncanny valley. If Disney was willing to take creative liberties like that in the visuals, everything would be so much better imo. But instead they're lazy and rely on gimmicks.

OH MY DISNEY! The Disney Live action remakes do NOT need to stop. They are freakin amazing. In fact, I prefer them over the animated ones and my favorite Disney Live action remake is Beauty and the Beast. So gorgeous, phenomenal, breathtaking, emotional, tear worthy, and amazing. Chef’s kiss. I would be so pissed, frustrated, irritated, sad, and confused if they did stop. To me, they are THE best things Disney has ever made. Ever. Disney, never stop making Live action remakes. Never. Keep them coming. I will buy them all and watch them all the time.

I absolutely love Sideway's video on the live action remakes. The music OF the movies make the movies what they are. And I love what he says about Will Smith's performance as the Genie. "Friend Like Me" in the movie itself? It is bad. Why? Because They are trying to have Will PLAY Robin Williams version of the Genie. However, they have a different version OF THE SAME SONG in the credits, however, it is Will Smith doing HIS version of "Friend Like Me" and it is SO much better than whatever they decided to do for the in-movie song. And I think Sideways does bring up a good point - Disney is clipping the wings of it's live action performers. They have to perform to what the original cast of the animated movie did, they cannot make the movie their own. Those little imperfections that made the character more unique and brought out personality in the character? Nope, nonexistent. Especially in those musical performances, Disney removes any sense of personality to them and just autotunes the hell out of any and all of their performances. I've only seen Cinderella in full. All other movies I have seen clips of. But like, they're bad... and also like, weirdly dark? Like, people like the movies because of the color and the music (among other things). How do you get that wrong SO BADLY?

It doesn't matter how "good" these remakes are, they will always just be cheap imitations of much better movies. Honestly the most pointless movies ever made other than to make $$$

When live-action Beauty and the Beast was announced the runner ups for Belle were Emma Watson and Anna Kendrick, and I really really hoped Anna didn't get the part because I just knew the movie was going to be bad. No shade to Emma, it's just that because of the fact that she isn't a singer, the failure in a musical wouldn't affect her career as badly

The only Disney live-action remakes I've seen that I actually like, were 101 Dalmatians back in 1996 (mainly because they mostly used live animals, and limited the amount of CGI that they used), and Cinderella. With some of the others I've seen, I've been much less impressed. With Mulan, everything that was fun and lighthearted in the original story was taken out of the film, and it was turned into a drama/action flick. Also, the Mulan in the live-action film wasn't as relatable. The Mulan in the original animated film was just an ordinary girl who knew what she had to do, and she went out and did it, and she worked hard to gain the respect of her fellow soldiers. The Mulan in the live-action film was born with special powers, and she didn't seem to have quite as difficult of a time as her animated counterpart. Lady and the Tramp lacked much of the warmth and charm of the original, and I didn't care for the new Lady with an attitude -- I prefer the sweet and docile animated Lady. With Dumbo, I particularly hated the ending -- you had two elephants that were used to being cared for by people, and you were just going to stick them on a ship and send them all by themselves to who knew where, to completely fend for themselves? And as for the new Little Mermaid film -- Disney had the chance to create an AMAZING new character with its first black mermaid, with a completely new storyline, but all they did was give an existing character a different skin tone, without even changing the name. I think that Disney has been running out of ideas in recent years, hence all the live-action remakes, and I'll be glad when they get off this live-action remake binge!

I’m almost surprised the topic of the live action Hunchback of Notre Dame fancast that went viral didn’t come up. It was so widespread that Josh Gad, the reported producer of said remake, reposted the fancast making everyone think it was real, only for him to have to clarify that it was indeed a fancast and therefore fake. His original post was teasing people, trying to get people to want the movie, and then once enough people expressed excitement over the idea of it, they were “lol, great. That was fake, but good to know that if it does get made, it will have a huge following.” It is manipulative, and very cash graby. Not quite as bad as a Moana remake so soon after it’s release, but still. Feels manipulative.
