@@joannam1284 it might have been that you were using a lot of heavy protein ones that built up in your hair! I've had fob a year ago, and I really liked the first one, it genuinely changed my hair for the better at first. And even more so my scalp. But halfway through the bottle it stopped working as I wanted it to. It did nothing more than what Drugstore shampoo and conditioner did for me. I then changed my goals for the next shipment and that didn't help much either. The shampoo and conditioner work. They don't irritate my sensitive scalp, my hair is healthy etc. But it's not good enough to be worth the money, if I can get the same result for a fraction of the price, especially with international shipping and taxes which I had to deal with.
@ACWells133 жыл бұрын
Out of interest did you pick a formula with silicones? I've had a similar experience- switched to a different shampoo, which has been amazing for a while then has just stopped working, and my hairdresser said it was probably silicone deposits building up over time.
@vanessa35503 жыл бұрын
@@ACWells13 No, I got the silicone free option. I've never used shampoos or conditioners with silicones in my life before, so I didn't see the reason to start with fob. I genuinely think it just worked to well 😂 My hair became so much more healthy, I then also had a haircut and that left me with pretty much only virgin undyed hair and because of that the old recipe became too nourishing. The second shipment with adjusted goals worked, but since my hair by then was so healthy, it didn't work that much better than drug store shampoo would and just is not worth the price. I'm still using up the shampoo bottle (they do last forever) but I'll switch to something cheaper afterwards.

Regarding itchy scalp and dandruff, about 4 years ago I started a low carb lifestyle (50g/day). Before, my scalp was almost scaly and itched so badly if I didn’t wash everyday. Now, no dandruff or itchiness-completely gone, and I can wash twice a week. If I splurge and have cake or something high carb, the dandruff reappears until I get those carbs back down. Great video, I think I’m going to try these products!

Best of luck to anyone actually using these, my hair is still recovering from the absolute havoc these products wreaked on it. I have straight, virgin hair that's super healthy, shiny, and balanced normally so I figured it wouldn't do any harm to try out personalised hair care. This stuff left my hair greasy a few hours after washing, matted and tangled constantly, dull and overall limp and lifeless. I've used literal poundland products that made my hair look and feel better lmao. At first I thought my hair was just adjusting to the new product but after 3 months it was still awful so now I'm stuck with over half a bottle of shampoo I literally can't use and a conditioner that doesn't really do anything more than a standard drugstore product.

This was so helpful!! I was skeptical of the "Soothe Scalp" one because they always have tea tree oil in them, which irritates the hell out of my scalp, but it's great to know that it actually has helpful ingredients, and not just a bunch of essential oils!

I just realized I've been watching your videos on and off for almost 10 years. Your haircare videos have always been my favourites! You give such great advice that's super useful for everyday people, and you're so positive and nice to watch!

I ordered from them online and I kinda feel like the soothe scalp option actually made my scalp drier and more flaky....like I switched from slightly oily dandruff flakes bothering me 3 days after washing to dry super itchy flakes bothering me the next day. Idk, I really want to love it, so I'm taking a break but gonna go back to it and hope it was just weather or hormone related or something

Such a great video! Thank you! Ok, here are my experiences with some of the CORE ingredients: -GLYCERIN: Makes my 3A curls frizzy when it's humid/rainy (which is most days, here). -SHEA: looks nice at first, but builds up so that my hair gets so heavy it stops curling. My hair stylist is a curly hair specialist and thinks that Shea builds up on everyone, all the time. Maybe someday, customizable hair products will let us skip on the glycerin and maybe someday, Shea will be less common in curly products.

Very helpful!! Glycerin is in freaking everything, and I was wondering how such a strong humectant would act on curly / humidity sensitive hair.

I tried function of beauty a few years ago when it was first popular with a lot of influencers. I thought it felt nice and good quality, but I didn’t notice any improvement in my hair compared to medium priced products like bedhead or redkin so I didn’t repurchase since those are a much better value.

I had NO idea Function of Beauty was in Target, now!! I've been using their shampoo/conditioner for over a year via the online subscription service and LOVE THEM. I feel like it could be a bit easier to customize online via buying different things to chemistry lab @ your house, but both ways are awesome. Thanks so much for going in-depth on what all the different boosters do and how they're helpful. LOVE

I ordered some for my 18 yr old daughter who has long natural auburn hair, that has a mild frizz and can appear dull. I got the wavy/antifrizz/strength/shine combo in both shampoo and conditioner. She's been using it for a month now and she's blown away by how her hair has responded to it.

Thanks for your in-depth review on the bases and add ins. I've been on the fence about customized care for my daughter's hair. My hair is straight and simple, not hard for me to find shampoo/conditioner, almost anything works for me. My daughter has very curly hair and I have been struggling to find something that works for her. $29 for a pair is definitely doable to try for her. I've been spending $9-10 a pop for other shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins for her every time we try something new, and half the time we hate it and throw it out before it's used up. Very much looking forward to trying this. Heading to Target!

This video was amazing! Can you please do the same but with the one from the website and then compare your impressions of each? I noted that if you select the same hair goal they use a different ingredient in the website version compared to the target version
@stagnantfox30273 жыл бұрын
I do not have any PHD yet but I have been in numerous hair product factories.what I learned with customizable products is the issue with mixing boosters is that you will be most likely altering the pH of a product which is not a good thing to do because you can easily get overzealous with it and come out with a pH that is not good for your hair and scalp and the can promote more fungi in your scalp (that we all have) that feeds on dead skin. Which can lead to more dandruff.

AnnaLaura definitely has some 2C curls (and maybe some 3A? It’s hard to tell). But honestly as someone with 2B-3A curls, I’ve learned that curl type only tells you so much. My curls got so much better when I decided to cater to thickness and porosity before curl type.

I've used the products from the website and customised it to my hair etc (so not these Target products), they were nice products but didn't rock my world considering the high price. I think stylers are more important for my curls, I have yet to find anything that really keeps my curls nice and defined for any length of time. I emailed Function of Beauty to see if they had suggestions to improve my chosen formula, and the responses were vague and just referred me to the hair quiz, which I had already done.

I mean, the ingredients sound cool and all, and I really appreciate that you did your research and actually read proper scientific articles. However, without knowing how much of each ingredient is added we cannot know for sure that they are actually benefiting the hair in any way. They do sound promising, which is a great start, but when it comes to ingredients dosage is everything. Too little of something will not have any effect, and too much of it might even be harmful. Also, there are other things that come into play, such as how the ingredients interact with each other, stability, delivery systems, etc... I am a bit skeptical about some of the claims, since both products end up getting washed off anyway, so are the ingredients going to be effective by just laying on the hair/scalp for a few minutes? I would not make a general claim that these products are good based solely on the ingredients, I think we can only know for sure after trying it out for a good while. Great video regardless, just some thoughts from a molecular biologist :)

Fair enough! Based on the order of the ingredient list I was personally happy with the amount of active ingredients in each formula. I am trying to learn more about cosmetic formulations to learn how things work together so if you know any good resources off the top of your head, I’d love to know! ☺️
@thebookalchemist43533 жыл бұрын
@@kayleymelissa It's really cool that you are diving deeper into this world of beauty science, I personally find it fascinatingI I do have some experience on scientific research, but I work in biomedical research, which is a different world altogether, so I am no expert on cosmetics, much less on hair care ahaha But, like you, I am very interested in learning more about formulations :) I don't really use any specific resources, I just go on pubmed, researchgate, or even google scholar and search for topics of interest when curiosity hits. I can suggest two really great youtube channels off the top of my head though, which present well-researched information in a simple and engaging way: - Lab Muffin Beauty Science has a PhD in chemistry, so she really is an expert on active ingredients and talks a lot about cosmetic formulation - Angie Burgs is a chemist that also debunks a lot of beauty myths Highly recommend both if you haven't checked them out yet! However, I believe they do focus mostly on skin and makeup, as have I in the past, which is why your video left me excited to know more about the effectiveness of these ingredients and formulas :) I appreciate that you left a lot of sources in the description box!

We have very similar hair so based on your breakdown, I got the Wavy formulas with Color Protection, Strengthen, Deep Condition, and Soothe Scalp. Idea: 1 Soothe Scalp packet in the shampoo, and 1 Deep Condition packet in the conditioner (see what I did there?). If you are happy doing them, you should keep with these types of science-based myth and marketing OR efficacious type videos! Between this one and the rice one, I am LOVING!!! And it seems totally like something that could be “your thing” to further distinguish your channel. Love ya girl! 💕

Does anyone know why it’s only up to 3 boosters? Like does the bottle only have enough space for 3 or is more than 3 not good for your hair?
@ReneGrays3 жыл бұрын
I was just asking myself the same. FOB states on their websites faq: "You can buy 1, 2, or 3 - but not more than 3, as it won’t all fit and mix properly." So theoretically you can absolutely add all of the boosters, as long as you use a bigger bottle.
@multifaceted73 жыл бұрын
I think it's also because the more boosters you add, the less each will work because each one is being diluted more and more with each addition. So if you add too many, you won't be getting as much of the benefits of each booster.
