What people don’t understand about the “rice water” trend is that the reason why the Miao women do it is because they DONT have shampoo or access to shampoo products like us here in the USA or any other country that has money. My mom is from Laos and she said they would use rice water because they didn’t have money nor access to shampoo or did they know what shampoo is back when she was young. I have seen so many KZbin talk ethics with rice water but they actually don’t know nor will listen to the truth behind it. I love your explanations on everything....thank you so much for showing people what marketing companies do and not do!!
@snootsnoot76473 жыл бұрын
thank you so much for this information I didn't know this even tho I watched a few videos about it. i haven't tried it myself yet but the reason the "rice water method" caught my interest was because it's natural and not formulated in a science lab so a shampoo promoting itself with having rice water as an ingredient seemed weird and uninteresting to me.
@mintymoon23373 жыл бұрын
Its similar to the misleading hops extract claim. My mom is from Poland and apparently women used to use beer as a conditioning rinse when manufactured conditioners where not available. I don't think a tiny bit of extract blended in with conventional shampoo and conditioner formulas would do much or make sense when the chemistry behind using plain fermented rice water or beer is vastly different to using anything similar to a standard shampoo formula.

I wish there were more rules about what beauty companies are allowed to claim. The average costumer just can't make proper decisions in this jungle of pseudoscience. It's so hard to get reliable information on beauty, apart from "avoid the sun, sleep and drink water!".
@SarahIngleOfficial3 жыл бұрын
They legally are required to have good evidence to support all marketing claims, but they dance around “claims” by implying things. I also think laws need to be updated. It’s not really just cosmetics or drugs anymore. There’s this gray area with cosmeceuticals where there are cosmetic products that can also have medical benefits - but they can’t advertise any medical benefits because only drugs can. And even tho cosmetics are regulated, they’re not tested to the same degree as drugs, so what do we do with these “in-between” products? We really need separate testing requirements for these “gray-area” claims, but we can’t do that until they become their own separate category. Right now you can’t tell what’s legit because it all has to have weird, watered-down language because legally no cosmetic brand can advertise that their product has medical benefits (like hair growth) even if it legitimately does because that would make it a drug.

@@SarahIngleOfficial Thanks for taking the time! I live in Germany, as far as I know you aren't allowed to make "Heilsversprechen" (which means claiming your product can heal ailments) here either, unless your product is declared medicine and goes through rigorous testing. @@lacunalshadow There’s some of both. I like to blend different sources together. I just am very particular, and if I can’t film it myself for some reason or find a clip that fits what I want, I’ll spend an alarming amount of time manipulating footage (especially color and timing) to fit the image I have in my head. If it’s ever anything that I didn’t make or buy the stock footage, it has the channel name on screen - for example, a few clips from Function of Beauty’s KZbin. One thing about function of beauty was that it is supposed to be sustainable, refill your clear plastic bottles by ordering refills and not having to get new bottles all the time. With the target collection I wonder if it’s still sustainable, colored plastic bottles are barely recycled and the little refills are a lot to do it yourself by buying all the individual packaging ingredients. Thank you! I got sucked into function of beauty last year because I saw so many of my KZbin friends promoting it. I was so excited and wanted so badly to love it but never got the results I was looking for. I had the worst time canceling their subscription service. They have really bad customer support for that. I do not recommend the brand to anyone. I've been using the aveno apple cider vinegar shampoo you recommended and have been very pleased. Now if I can just figure out how to solve my dandruff I'll be pretty happy! I appreciate your thoughtful videos!

Yes! They charged me and sent new ones with absolutely no emails reminding me (I think it was 6 months after my first order so I forgot). I was in a tight spot and tried to cancel but couldn't. So I deleted my card info and had to Google how to cancel, I hate when companies do that. Cute product, fun to try but not worth it. I would have at least liked to change the scent and color instead of the exact same stuff.

Yeah I'm always hesitant to subscribe I didn't, but didn't regret getting it. I got the leave in mask for the hair and honestly it's the only reason I think my hair is so smooth and nice now... Luckily my kid refused to use shampoo for a while and making pink and purple liquid to put on her hair changed her mind. So I guess all in all I'm all for the leave in now but hey at least my kid can use them without complaining at me about them for the whole time.

I've seen people say tea tree oil is good for dandruff ( though it also may work for dry scalp), and apple cider vinegar is good for dry scalp (yes, those are two different things. I have dry scalp, my brother has dandruff😅) Personally I've been using tea tree oil shampoo from Trader Joes and a 1:2 ratio of apple cider vinegar to water mixture on my scalp. We'll see where this goes.

Also something to consider about reviews, especially on product pages: People only review standouts. If your shampoo performs as an average shampoo that doesn't do anything special, but also doesn't make your hair fall out, you're not going to go out of your way to review it. People only report the abnormal. If it's the first time someone is actually using products suited for them (eg the right hair products for your hair type) they might see fast differences, which they will report. It's why you frequently see that a product has a very much all or nothing score, a lot of people give it either 1 star or 5 stars, because they have had an exceptional experience with it, whether that be good or bad

At first I liked it then I noticed my scalp started breaking out and I was losing more hair in the shower. The hair I was losing kept increasing and was definitely outside of the norm even when I’m shedding more than normal due to hormones, etc. I stopped using it, found a low PH shampoo thanks to you, and my hair started getting back to normal. Been trying to find a function of beauty review that really gets down to the science and finally found it!! As a biochemistry graduate, I can second everything you said about the caveats in reading primary literature. I did notice that when you measured the pH of the shampoo you seemed to have diluted it first, but the dilution process will actually cause the pH to increase (pH is a measurement of the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, the lower the pH the higher the H+ concentration). What I'm curious to see is if the pH will fall within the ideal range if you take the dilution factor into account (unless there's a standardized way to dilute shampoo and everything is reported on the diluted scale?).

It's so frustrating how companies are essentially forced to use trendy ingredients and buzzwords when marketing their products just to appeal to the misinformed masses. Hopefully people start caring more about what actually works so we have more brands using actual science to sell their products. Instead long description of products using flowery language and playing to a fantasy, products should offer a brief description of why they're effective with scientific references listed below.
@hannahrauh543 жыл бұрын
As a chemist I was super impressed by the amount of effort you put into explaining the science. A lot of people get scared about reading research studies and it's a way where companies (or even other people for that matter) make claims based off the title or abstract. Research literacy is such an important skill and will help people make more informed decisions, especially when we're all blinded by pretty marketing-- including myself! I love a pretty product but I always need to look into the science since some chemicals in certain combinations or concentrations really mess with my skin and hair. I highly recommend anyone who has sensitive skin/hair or who are seeing things go downhill to really look into what's in their products. Simple changes can make a world of a difference :) (if anyone's interested, for skincare products I love to test them on CosDNA, super useful for making things simple)

Loved this video. It shows a great amount of attention to detail and research. Earned yourself a subscriber. Your video was too late for me though already bought the conditioner (already knew the shampoo likely wouldn’t do anything based on their claims- you can’t do anything with shampoo that has anything to do with styling (calling out the volume and straightening boosters for the shampoo)- duh it washes out) I will say your video was a bit harsh just because ingredients aren’t 100% properly proven to work, does not necessarily mean they can’t. There are so many ingredients out there and products with so many combinations of them, it’s sort of a trial and error industry of finding what works best for you. But I find many many cosmetologist fall to this flimsy study says this con, so good on you for calling them out! Also thank you for calling out the ph balance. So glad I didn’t get the shampoo! I tried the online version of function of beauty and its honestly been the best conditioner I have tried yet (the shampoo was lacking). Now it was too expensive for me to say the long term effects were great unfortunately. I just used it when I really wanted my hair to look nice. So I figured I’d try to target version. To be fair my other option that I use is Garnier Fructis grow strong, and I’m guessing it’s not the best (but boy does it do wonders for detangling and that just is top priority for ngl). Been trying to find better so I’m in that trial and error phase but also trying not to break the bank

Mine is long, fine, curly, and thin, and FoB SOMEHOW almost entirely de-frizzes my hair and puts some curl back into it without me having to weigh it down with any styling products whatsoever. (Also, I'm lazy, and anything that will let me wash, condition, and air-dry my hair with nothing other than a spritz of argan oil needed to make it presentable for the next week is a godsend in my eyes.) That said, just because it works for *me* doesn't mean it'll work for *you.*

Apparently some people have put more and said it worked. Side note, it's weird how online it let's you choose 5 but you're supposed to use only 3 for Target. Anyway, I didn't like it. It left my hair dry, frizzy, and weighed down. I've seen other people say the same when referring to the Target ones.
