This song has a pretty cool history and meaning. Its a truly American folk song. In the time this song was written, one of the few dynamics between European and Native Americans that wasn't horrible was in the Shenandoah Valley. Fur trappers and other such people came over and lived, for the most part peacefully alongside the Natives of the area. There are multiple versions of this song. In some, 'Shenandoah' is the name of an Indian Chieftain and the father of the singers beloved. In some other versions she's the metaphorical daughter of the land named Shenandoah. They all speak to how much he loves the land and its people. A heartwarming song.

Tennessee Ernie Ford did this one and 16 Tons both. He just keeps getting better. Love his bass but his bari-tenor did me in this time. I cried. BTS not so fun fact: the piano was one half step flat, and Geoff had to play it while listening to the correct soundtrack while filming the video. He said is was horrifying and I can't even imagine!
@Melisendre2 жыл бұрын
In the end of the Patreon video he plays that piano and it is indeed horrifying.😱 I loved his higher parts too.

There's a clip of the out-of-tune piano from this song in Geoff's video about Kathy's hearing loss that he released on 2/5. It truly tested his acting skills, pretending the piano in this vid sounds like what we're hearing.
@zarasha822011 ай бұрын
The BTS for his latest, Jack's Lament, was equally painful... the piano looks gorgeous, but I winced every time I heard it... and he had to listen to it for hours!!!

This completely blows my mind! 🤯. How can his voice be so rich and deep, and at the same time he gives us these mellow harmonies! 💖 I didn't think it possible, but he keeps on getting better and better! 🔥💯😍
@Drake8442212 жыл бұрын
I love the fact that he just does this one as smooth as hell. Like, he doesn't go crazy when it comes to the range of it all, and he doesn't showboat. The song doesn't lend itself to that kind of singing, honestly. He knows when to hold back with a piece like this, and it is 100% better for that fact.
@carolfranklin2 жыл бұрын
So glad you loved this I just adore it. When it dropped on Patreon I got so teary at how beautiful it is. I don't know how he keeps getting better but he does. One of his you haven't reacted to is High & Dry it's one Geoff & a keyboard & it's brilliant.

Just for fun, I looked up the definition of Shenandoah.....Etymology. The word Shenandoah is of unknown Native American origin....Schin-han-dowi, the "River Through the Spruces", On-an-da-goa, the "River of High Mountains" or "Silver-Water", and an Iroguois word for "Big Meadow" have all been proposed by Native American etymologists.

These songs just made me wonder when he was released from Area 51?

The poor men that will come and go through baby Abby’s life. “Um, if you can’t sing as low ask Geoff, Tim, or Avi, well then just keep the line moving”. “.where are my bassoprofundo talent scouts? They need to get busy and find me a Tim junior.” And the next Day ...” yes Austin Brown is my dad, yes he can sing higher than my mom!” Such is the life of a child who’s mom is a Home Fry!

I loved this song. Geoff normally focuses on his bass notes but this was a great reminder of how awesome he is in higher range. I just keep waiting for Layne to start doing videos like this. I can just see it as he has light instruments in the background as two of him skillfully beat box and 2 others of him sing. Personally, I think it would be mind-blowing. (No disrespect meant towards Eli or Caesar. I know they have the talent to do these sort of solo videos too. )
@bigjohn9622 жыл бұрын
I feel this was the best song Geoff has done. You are right you are right, he is getting better and better. On a side note, I know you do not do many old performances, but I feel you owe it to your self to check out "Tennessee Ernie Ford" singing "Shenandoah." He was an old school base and baritone singer. You like base I think you will enjoy Mr. Ford. Also check out other songs by Mr. Ford I think you will be glad you did. By the way he sang the original 16 Tons also covered wonderfully by Geoff Castelllucci.

I've never been a huge fan of this song, mostly because I've heard it sung so badly so many times. This was beautiful though. It had the low bass notes where they seemed to fit well and not forced in like with his cover of 'Country Roads'. It's always wonderful hearing him using the upper parts of his range because he's just as smooth and effortless there. That first run he did was as impressive, if not more so, than his bass notes. He may have done those in some of Voiceplay's songs, but it's harder to hear when mixed with other voices.
