This actually happened in China in the 1960's. Sparrows were considered at that time as pests and carriers of pestilence, so the communist party decided that the sparrows had to be exterminated. This caused a massive ecological imbalance, the bug population swelled and they started devouring the crops, which in turn caused a famine. 15-55 million people died in that famine.

Cause the knowledge of the importance of ecosystems is very important and it seems that it is disregarded and actively fought against, this was a demonstration of total ignorance, I think that they don't know the source of the pandemic and how to treat it to this day, nor do they understand the consequences of environmental damage, they chose fear and ignorance over understanding, that's what happens when the education system is underperforming or non existent, Hell, especially the Corpos should understand this, Biotechnica needs to step up it's game.

Shit, one of Peralez' so called ambitious campaign promises is to get around a hundred scolarships for the best students in NC. *Let that sink in, a hundred scholarships are considered groundbreaking in a city with a population of millions...*

Its hinted in the lore that a number of plagues and pandemics that have occured are all due to bioengineered microorganisms. Its already confirmed that most of the earth's plant life were destroyed by one such bioweapon which was originally created to destroy drug fields. And it's speculated that poultry and cattle diseases were also spread to make the populace fully dependent on kibble and scop, the synthetic food developed by Biotechnica and other food manufacturing corpos.
