2018 Nissan Leaf - Review and Road Test

Introduced in 2011 the Nissan Leaf helped make electric cars ever-so-slightly more mainstream. With the 2nd-generation Leaf Nissan hopes to continue that momentum. The latest Leaf retains its practical hatchback design but this time around it’s styling is more mainstream and less polarizing. Kelley Blue Book’s Micah Muzio took charge of the latest Leaf to see how generation-2 performs, both as a car and as an electric car.

I leased a 2020 SV model and I loved it so much I decided to purchase it outright! By far the best car I've owned! Love the new styling of it from the first generations and there is virtually zero maintenance. The only downside I'd give it is the range. If you want closer to the 250 mile range mark, get the Plus version but since I don't plan on taking this car on statewide road trips, It's not a huge issue. Its my first electric car and I don't think I'll go back to ICE again.

I have the first Gen 2011 leaf and can see why it's the most popular electric car. It's meant to be used as a daily driver CAR, not like a novelty toy or a showy car, or for impressing anyone. Much like a minivan, it knows what it's for and does it's job pretty well.

It might take 8 hours (doubtful, should be less) from dead flat to fully charged with 240V L2 charging, but a lot of that time is due to throttling when the state of charge (SOC) gets near fully charged and the cells are balanced out by the BMS. Charging from 20% SOC to 90% SOC means adding roughly 28 kWh of energy to the battery pack. At a 6.6 kW charging rate, that's 4 hours and 15 minutes to add roughly 100 miles of range.

Even with the $7.5k incentive, my Fiesta ST costed me only $17k. Add $15k on gas over the lifetime of the vehicle, and the total price is the same as what you've just paid on a new electric car (minus the electricity). All in all, it comes down to the same money, save for cases like accidents, when the insurance is going to refund you with less money remaining for you to buy a new electric car vs the gasoline option. Just keep buying electric! That way our electricity will keep rising in price, and our gasoline dropping!

The base price of this car is almost $40,000 in Canada and tops out at close to $50,000. Which I guess is why the local Nissan dealer hasn't sold a single solitary electro-buggy so far. That's a lot of moolah for a subcompact vehicle, electric or not.

With range as a factor the Bolt is the best EV out there that's cheaper than a Tesla (that you can actually buy). But give me another 100 miles, and I'm onboard with a new Leaf. I've got close to 85,000 miles on my 2011 Leaf and it's definitely time for an upgrade. Come on, Nissan, give me a reason to show some brand loyalty.

Lack of thermal management on the pack, no thanks. Also 150 miles is not quite enough for my area in Canada. Leaves me with the choice of bolt or model 3, I'd rather look back at the 3 so there's my choice. 3.3kw being the base charge is a joke.

What I never hear in a review or advertisement for any electric car is how it performs in winter. I remember a report out of Denver about Leafs suffering badly on snow-covered roads and next to no range when headlights, heater, rolling resistence from the snow and the effects of the cold temperatures on the battery all conspired against it. Driving ranges of 50 - 60 miles were not uncommon and if you made it back home you recharged it from a coal-burning power plant. No thank you to this or any other electric car.

I don't like that these cars don't really take advantage of the space savings of the electric motor. I do realise that electric car components are easier and much cheaper to build on existing platforms and designs. That's why I hope these EV's really become mainstream quickly so auto makers can start designing EV's from scratch. I'm hoping for a small electric city car in which the cargo space (with folding seats) would reach all the way from the very back of the car to the very front.

"It no longer screams 'I'm electric". Well, sort of. It's more like, the rest of cars have caught up with electric cars in terms of "modern" design, so the electric cars are not that much different. Electric cars haven't changed, the rest of cars' designs caught up to them. The only thing that really differentiates electric cars from the rest is generally superior aerodynamic design to increase efficiency.
