This video needs a colossal gavel slam and mic drop at the end. It's so common to hear so-called fitness professionals say that squats will ruin your knees. And heaven forbid you go below parallel! It makes no sense. It's a little like saying reading will ruin your brain. I'm 58 and have been slowly getting into jogging over the last several months. I hadn't been squatting regularly during this and decided to add them back in concurrently. My sore knees have only gotten better, my running distance has increased, and my squat reps have also increased.
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for that, Steve. I love the analogy of "reading will ruin your brain"! 😂 I've been baffled for a while as to how so many of us have come to the conclusion that this joint we have, is unique insofar as we aren't supposed to actually use it, despite the fact that we need to use to actually survive...it never made logical sense to me. I don't know anyone who has improved their lower body health and capability, over the long run, by not moving their joints through their usable ROM. Put your leg in a cast, and the most important part of the recovery process is regaining ROM in the joint.

By far the weirdest thing I've seen in the past year or so is an increase online in people saying that you should only squat to 90 degrees. Righty or wrongly, "90 degrees" is a cue people have used when squatting for a long time, but historically it has always referred to the angle between the top of your thigh and some imaginary vertical line. In other words, it meant the same thing as "squat to parallel". What I'm seeing now however is people refer to "90 degrees" as the angle between your femur and your tibia, which for most people won't even constitute a quarter rep since your tibia tends to angle forwards during a squat. It's just odd. Go back 2-3 years, and the internet would tell you that was one of the worst sins you could commit in a gym lol. Personally I'm in the "go as low as you can without pain" camp. And even then, if you've got pain that isn't resulting from a serious structural problem with the knee, occasionally easing into that painful range of motion can actually help resolve it over time by strengthening the supporting muscles. You just need to be careful and listen to your body. If something hurts, back off until it doesn't.

In total agreement and would like to add that it's common in many cultures across the globe (most notably Asian cultures) to practically live in a squat position throughout the day. I only took note of this about 5 years ago or so, and being 6'5" was totally jealous as I just wasn't capable to perform a deep squat. Fast forward to today, my hips are loose (as they should be) and my squat is comfortable and deeper than most at my height. I'll be performing squats for the rest of my life lol

Their is such a convoluted noise of "influencers" trying to tie anyone interested in fitness into the ropes of self doubt, a criminal perspective of what works for one will work for everyone, and play on personal opinion over the facts trying to make that line between the two barely visible to see. For those who still don't have a good idea how to properly progressively overload the knee joint or joints in general here is a quick guide: If you want to be safe, don't push through pain at all whilst doing the exercises. If you get pain right after exercise or a day afterwards or in the next training session, this means you did to much and thus have to reduce the load (volume, intensity, range of motion etc.)of the exercise you did. This kind of pain monitoring is also very common in physical therapy and there it's actually ok to push trough a little bit pain because you're in rehab. Pain is a guide to how well you react to the loads. I hope this helps.

Thank you for this video. It's important to say that the squats he's showing are a "heel-up" style, which is totally fine. You get more knee flexion this way, and it's a great stretch. But you get less hip and ankle flexion. The traditional style squat is with the heels down. Squatting with the heels down stretches all three joints (hip, knee, ankle). Again, great video. Everyone, please squat more!

These squats, deep knee bends/hindu squats, are my favourite bodyweight squatting variation. After the pain subsided I started squatting naturally with knees over toes and over time it fixed the pain, in fact I used to do 100 squats everyday just to not have pain. Nowadays I do jumping jacks, jump rope and burpees and my knees have never felt better.

I can concur that as a 69 year old who over a year ago was diagnosed with degenerative osteoarthritis of the left knee that diet and exercise have eradicated the pain and I have full mobility of that knee again. However as a footnote, I discovered that alcohol, especially beer would cause the condition to flare up and so I no longer drink any alcohol. What are the advantages of the heel raised squats over the heel on the ground squats? Some trainers will suggest that too much knee over the toe action is not good for the knee and so far, I've only been doing heel firmly pressed into the ground squats. Thank you.

People have told me for years that bodyweight deep knee squats were bad for my knees. My knees have been amazingly good to me thanks to the blood flow alone, let alone the muscle. Thank you!

Another thing you can do, that is related to squats and in some ways avoids repetitive stress and targets the joints of the ankles knees and hips at various angles is martial art katas or forms. I saw an old OLD Kung Fu master do his daily routine form (a northern style that moved from horse stance to bow stance etc shifting very low) his strength and dexterity was amazing for his age and so was his posture.
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I’m a huge fan of that style of training. I think incorporating both will cover all the bases.

I was about to stop squatting but thank god for this. Now back to squatting

A few months ago, i got patellar tendinitis in my left knee, because i was doing stuff way beyond my current level. My quadriceps were strong enough, but not my tendons. To compensate, i used my right leg more, which caused it to develop in the right leg too. After a few weeks of not knowing what to do, (and hating every day of it, because I'm a very active person), i went to a physiotherapist, who had me do three different exercises to fix my knees (which has worked wonderfully). And recently, he told me to do squats, as a way to fix my knee. Strengthening it, to make it better again. But that i still need rest days inbetween, to not damage my knees even more. Breaking down the body, and letting it repair itself is what is needed to gain strength. At least for muscles and tendons.

Took me almost a year of steady work but I went from being unable to squat to being able to do a full deep squat just by movement. I did need to use chairs and railings at the beginning to assist the movements but now I've got full mobility and that's just from moving my knees and pushing the difficulty slightly.

"The knee is meant to bend, so bend it". Thank you, my whole fitness journey, I was always told that knees over toes are very dangerous.

squats are life. Crossfit taught me that. haven't been crossfitting in a while, but I did run a couple of marathons, and off days from running almost NEED air squats, lunges, bulgarians etc, in order to keep the knees healthy for the long running days. I can't imagine life without squats. Probably THE best exercise, and one you can't really do without, if you wanna maintain a decent to high quality of life.

This totally makes sense, and that how I always thought. Its just sad that in todays society, someone has to make this video explaining this. Thanks for uploading!
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
Oh gosh such a good point. It’s like it should be self evident. You can basically reason your way to the proper conclusion, so yeah it’s wild that this belief is so commonly held. It’s one of the most frequent questions I get. Pretty crazy!
@hanksimon1023 Жыл бұрын
I agree. When I learned to hinge at my hips rather than my back, I was able to improve my knees, and my 70yo knees are in better shape than many people 30 years younger... I am comfortable resting in the "Asian" squat ... although I move into and out of the squat slowly rather than as quickly as I did decades ago.

What you said toward the end is facts, I started doing those squats you're doing in the video and my knees feel absolutely horrible even though I've always had a good ROM. I'd like to believe it's more of a tendon out pacing the muscles down at the bottom, but I plan on spending some months running ATG just to be able to walk down stairs without pain again.
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly! You have to meet your body where it’s at, and move up from there. ATG is the supreme resource for this. Let me know how it goes. I’m expecting some good news from you in the future!
@LiiMuRi Жыл бұрын
I sit a lot at work, and I've noticed that my knees get bad if I don't move them enough. At it's worst, I had such knee pain I could hardly walk up stairs. But doing body-weight squats every day keeps my knees pain free. I don't need much, just one set in the morning is enough. Then on actual leg workout days I'll do more, but the little daily exercise is the thing keeping my knees healthy
