wow I do ballet and I understand but she has the talent and the muscles to do all these tricks. if she loses weight by just eating less, she will lose the muscles but if she loses weight by exercising the right way, that would help her body. but putting that aside it makes us realize how messed up our "ideal" body type is.

Yourmom I meant the ideal body type in general (not in ballet) is messed up. I know ballerinas are petite and you’re supposed to weigh like a feather. But aside from that social media has shaped the way we think about our body.
@itsafab
@itsafab 7 жыл бұрын
Really there’s a lot more too it than just being skinny. Firstly, weighing too much and dancing in pointe shoes is very bad for your joints. Secondly, you have to be partnered and lifted. It’s pretty difficult lifting a person over your head as it is, but especially when they weigh just as much as you do. I only say this because as a male ballet dancer, it affects our safety as well. Obviously, there are many dancers who suffer from disordered eating habits, but there’s so many people who want to do ballet professionally which makes it very competitive. It’s become part of the job.

“I normally eat when I want to, but I’m cutting back lately” So the judges are pretty much telling her to starve? Not good at all. She’s already cutting back how much she eats, which is horrible enough, but now she pretty much has to “diet”, which is going to wreck her body and her thought about her body. I hate it!

The judges were cruel with their wording, but they were completely true. Ballerinas need to have a slender build to look graceful on stage. She has thicker and shorter limbs than desired so losing more weight would help. Dieting to the point of starvation isn't uncommon in Korea. Their beauty standards are quite high, so if she really strives to be a ballerina, she has to thin out more.

I think Yeon Jae mentioned that before that she doesn’t have the body for rhythmic gymnast either (tall slender and long limbs). I think it is harsh to tell her to lose weight but I can’t really say it’s wrong for that because just like an athlete, a ballerina probably need to keep their body in perfect shape so that they can do the difficult moves or show off the body lines. Some of us think that those stereotypes should not exist anymore (like you have to be slender and long limbs to be a ballerina) but I feel proud that Yeon Jae proved to us that she can overcome her disadvantage. She doesn’t have the best body to be a rhythmic gymnast but definitely did better than anyone else who have the better body for it.

《Glias》 • I get that but I feel like there needs to be a control in there -- starving isn't healthy and it isn't going to help her athletically either... they need to specify that losing weight needs to be done healthily or in the long run it isn't worth it. she's cutting meals for appearance but the body wears down, and if she doesn't have a healthy relationship to food because her weight is criticized randomly then it could cause psychological problems -- she'll always compare herself to others and never find herself good enough if she can look at weight loss from the perspective of self love -- showing an even more confident and *healthier* version of the amazing person she already is, the weight loss will be much more sustainable, and she'll avoid negative effects to her mental health

It's true though, she's definitely at a healthy weight, but if she wants to be a ballerina, she needs to be skinny as hell. The ideal ballerina is thin and long boned, it's not that you can't be good, but it's not ideal. It's like if you're a taller gymnast, or shorter than average basketball player, your technique can be amazing, but your body is not as suited.

Ballerinas as skinny as they look have a lot of muscle and looking at her, she needs to lose any weight that isn't muscle. It's partly for aesthetic reasons because they look more "elegant" when skinny, but also because it's easier for skinnier dancers to do certain moves that put a lot of pressure on their ankles.

I love her as a rhythmic gymnast, especially her clubs routine! She was one of the best gymnasts in the world in so many competitions... after all the stress she has surely endured during all this time, how can the judge say her to lose weight? Rhythmic gymnastics is a wonderful sport, but really tiring and at high levels there is already so much stress about body weight and physicality. I think she did not need to hear those words! She is amazing! The fact that some of her movements don't suit the lines of classical ballet is true... but she can certainly improve. Yeon Jae, fighting! :)

People are talking about Korean standards, but it's not. They're talking about it in ballet standards. She's kind of short and as good as she did other ballerinas have longer limbs. She's generally just a shorter girl so as harsh as it sounded they're just thinking about it from a ballet point. She says she's cutting back but she also needs to know that just starving herself isn't something that's good. She needs to find a better diet and exercise more.

I never said she needed to starve herself. I said this all in the point of the judges. She may be a gymnast and even though she's perfect for that she doesn't have the proportions of a ballerina. When the teachers said she needed to lose weight they were saying it from the pro ballet point of view. If she was gonna take what they say seriously, then she needs to modify her diet and the way she works out. I know she's a gymnast but that's not what I'm getting at. I'm glad she did well but it's all in the point of the ballerinas. Pease fully read what I've written before commenting. Thank you

When you are a rythmic gymnast, your training is based on ballet. Almost half hours of training are dance lessons. A rythmic gymnast has a hard diet like a ballerina would, but she also needs to be strong. So, the weight that she "must" lose, is only muscles.

C'mon let this girl have a break.

Most ballerinas are so thin because they are constantly working their bodies. If she has the routine that ballerinas did, then she would be super thin. But as a gymnist, their routine is a bit different and they are usually more muscular, like her, and not as thin as ballerinas tend to be. Both groups work super hard, and it is unfair for him to say that she needs to lose weight when she is not becoming an actual professional ballerina, but rather performing for this show. She performed very well. Props to her for being seemingly unfased by what he said, and I hope she stays healthy

lana del No ballerinas arent suppose to build more muscle . She has thigh muscles which will put a lot of pressure on her ankles for when she does the turns. She’s more prone to getting ankle injuries for her thigh muscles due to being a rhythmic gymnast. That’s why the guy asked her to lose weight, it’s not because of visual purposes.

Coarkjmsr hmmm are you sure? My sister goes to the national school of ballet of the Opera in Paris and she told me a few girls in her division were struggling with serious anorexia, that the rules about weight are really strict including a full body check after each holidays and you can get kicked out of the school just because of your weight. From the shows I've seen on youtube or by myself at the Opera Garnier I 100% agree she looks fat. Not telling it's healthy or she should listen to him and go on a strict diet (cause she's just a retired gymnast not a pro ballerina) but she's fat for a ballerina.
@ye5224
@ye5224 6 жыл бұрын
모모링 Sure there are many schools that still have strict weight rules, but I was a pre professional ballerina- and I don’t have the correct shape at all. Yet there are so many talented dancers I had the privilege to learn with, who aren’t stick thin either. Many of them had revived scholarships to top schools throughout the country awarded from the YAGP, there are some who now are In companies. I’ve spotted a change in acceptance about bodies within the USA and English ballet world, a realization that restriction on food an eating disorders aren’t healthy for an athlete. And personally I don’t see her as fat, one of the pre-pro dancers I learned with just recently won the silver medal in the YAGP and will be making it to the semifinals. And her body is very healthy and strong, schools in many countries are still setting a weight limit. But naturally as dancers, our bodies change and become thinner-but heavier with muscle. But this is just my opinion, and if it’s not accurate to you I’m sorry.
@Lumi0215
@Lumi0215 7 жыл бұрын
Everyone, though it’s harsh, what the judge said wasn’t wrong. She doesn’t have the build/weight of a ballerina. It’s only expected that she doesn’t have the build of a ballerina because she’s a gymnast. She has bulkier muscles and they are in places that ballerinas don’t have them or would be more toned. The other girls are thin because they’re all practically part of the entertainment industry in Korea, which is pretty much equivalent to having a naturally thin body or dieting to achieve that body type, which is why they all are thin enough for ballet. But these standards that ballet has aren’t just for aesthetic purposes. For example, ballet puts a lot of stress on the ankles, particularly when ballet dancers perform the en pointe (where they stand on the tip of the pointe shoes.) This takes a LOT of a trained muscles and flexibility around the ankle. Weight would definitely have an effect on the stress the ankles are under. As a person, she’s beautiful. But I really hope people would stop believing that ballet is just for aesthetics.

sync I’m not saying that it’s the nicest thing or the most practical thing to demand seeing as shes not a professional ballet dancer. But she’s being critiqued by the usual standards for any ballerina, so it’s not something anyone should really be offended by. My cousin and older sister had gone through it, my sister quit because she didn’t have the body type. Because she’s not built the same she’ll stand out for it. In ballet all the dancers have the same/similar body type for everything on stage to look balanced. Much like how the NY Rockettes require their dancers to be within a certain height range.

LittleInvisibleMe she looks perfectly graceful to me. she's not at all overweight. if she's considered too chubby to fit in then let the other girls put on weight.nonsense. people are so snobby when it comes to traditional arts. if Reed thin girls who look like they are starving is really what ballet is about it's time ballet evolved . the usual standard s for a ballerina seems a bit bonkers.
@Lumi0215
@Lumi0215 7 жыл бұрын
sync I never once said she wasn’t graceful. Don’t you think you’re also body shaming the girls that are thin by saying that they looked starved and how everyone else should put on weight then? Some are naturally that thin despite eating properly. (I am, my cousin is, many other people are.) You complain about how someone who doesn’t have the body type of a ballerina is criticized for it, but then criticize girls that are. That’s not doing anyone any favors either. Should the rules of ballet change? Maybe. It’s certainly something that people should put further thought into. She’s not chubby, but she has weight and muscles in places that ballet dancers don’t, understandably so because she’s a gymnast. I do agree that some are overly thin, but at the same time I’m someone who has been called overly thin despite being perfectly healthy and eating more than my peers. She just has a different body type. And when I say different, I don’t mean chubby. Her body is that of a gymnast. And much like one of the judges said, that will both help her and hold her back. For example, her thigh muscles could prove to be a hindrance if she took ballet up professionally. Ballet requires lean muscles and loose joints, their legs need to twist and turn in ways that gymnasts don’t, her thigh muscles are built for a different use. Another example is the difference in stress the ankles are put under. Ballerina’s put quite a bit of stress on their ankles, a perfect example is when their on pointe. Weight will have an effect. Did the judges mean to say she’s too chubby just because she doesn’t have the same aesthetics as others? Quite possibly so. But I don’t think that it’s right to immediately disregard other possibilities or jump to conclusions about the rules of ballet and how girls are thin just to be aesthetically pleasing.

LittleInvisibleMe You're the one that made it seem like ballet was all about appearance. I was just pointing it out to you that ballet might be more than that. unfortunately I admit I don't know if your talking nonsense or not about her muscles because I'm not a ballet expert. I assumed you said she can't do ballet cause she's chubby. As a ordinary viewer she looks fine. ballerina s don't perform for experts all the time and I wouldn't care about her muscles if I like her dancing. perhaps she could be a gymnast ballerina. that could be a new form of dance. Nobody in the entire universe really thinks skinny is an insult. I know cause I'm skinny. Ive seen my friend in tears when we went to a restaurant and one very kind man said that I should eat my frnds food too cause she didn't need it. ask yourself if would you be a skinny girl or a fat one? fat people have it wayyyyyy worse. people tell me all the time they wish they could eat like me and still not gain weight. no sympathy for u there sorry.

sync sync I never said that society doesn’t treat those that are heavier set with more criticism. However, this isn’t an argument about what body type is more deserving of sympathy. I pointed out my weight to remind you that we all have different body types, and thats not a bad thing. You shouldn’t be saying that the other girls should accommodate for her if you’re upset that the judges are asking her to accommodate for the sport. Ultimately, you’d still be pushing people who don’t have a certain body type to change. Some quick research online will prove to you how large a role ankles play for ballet dancers and how gymnasts and ballerinas will have different body types and muscles due to the differing demands of each discipline. Being able to dance en pointe is practically every little ballerina’s dream, but it takes a while for them to reach that point. The legs have to be incredibly flexible and the ankles need a lot of muscle, that’s why ballerina’s start off with soft shoes and not pointe shoes. Overtime ballet will shape your body into a slimmer figure, but ultimately there will always be differences in body types. For example, my sister was viewed as too thick for a ballerina. She has thicker bones and puts on weight easily, so she quit. Is it necessary for ballerina’s to be as thin as the requirements appear to say? Maybe not. They probably don’t need to be THAT thin, thin yes, but they probably could still be able to perform perfectly with a tad more weight. I agree in this aspect. Ballet has always had very thin dancers, but contrary to your previous comment I wasn’t being snobby about traditional arts nor am I particularly trying to advocate their traditions. After all, it’s not like ballet hasn’t changed over the years either. The girls actually have gradually become thinner over time as ballet has evolved. This is precisely why I say that these girls could be a little heavier than what the sport/art requires them to be. But at the same time I’m not 100% sure. As ballet has changed some over the years. What appears good to you or me is kind of irrelevant. Seeing as neither of us are experts. I’m only familiar with the sport because I have family members that participate in it. What might appear graceful to an untrained eye can be sloppy and disorganized to a trained eye. I think we should all keep in mind that these judges weren’t going easy. They were judging her by the standards of a ballerina and not someone who just took up the art. That in itself can be seen as a praise.

Hey guys, I know you're all concerned with the fact that the judge told her she needed to lose weight, but this is not a matter of social beauty standards. This is ballet. I don't mean that in a "all ballerinas have to be skinny bc tradition", I mean ballerinas use pointe shoes, aka they have to stand and dance on the very tips of their toes. It already hurts no matter what, but if you don't lose weight, your joints won't be able to handle it and will be damaged. It's not a fat shaming thing, it's a logic thing.

It's not because it's Korean, it's because it's ballet. A dancer aiming to be professional should be tall and slim as it makes it easier to execute moves and routines. You're right about them not judging based on what the Korean standard is. If you want to be a professional ballerina, you have to be tall, thin and toned with minimal body fat. Though in rhythmic gymnastics they prefer a shorter and muscular build with minimal body fat. Either way, they both require low body fat and that's what the judges want from her.

I've been a ballerina since i was a kid, but i quit the classic because of the struggle with my weight. It is a lowkey harsh thing that a classic ballerina have to be skinny, but when we look inside the tecnique, we start to see that a ballerina don't have to be thin, he needs to be. Shes not overweight, but we gotta put our racional side to work and accept that if she lose some weight shell be able to do everything gracier, to jump even higher and also gonna last longer for her to feel tired. Still don't think she needs to lose weight for the appearance, her body is actually really pretty, but I agree that if she lose some weight shell be able to improve her dance skills.
@ArteoftheMist
@ArteoftheMist 6 жыл бұрын
I feel like that's how he meant it? Like not as a judgment on her appearance as a person. I can see why people would be offended by his comment but the point of this was he auditioning for a show which would presumably be performed so the comment is more to do with the standards they'd expect from a person coming in as a "ballerina" or one who is attempting to "become" one which this show is sort of doing. Because if she was coming in to actually like BE a ballerina, they'd tell her this sort of thing because they'd want her to have that certain look, to have the stamina and to have the lines and be able to hold them. Her dance skills would definitely improve. Does she need to actually lose the weight? Meh, depends on the demands from the show but realistically heck no

The heavier one is trying to do ballet on anything close to a professional level the harder it'll be on your joints and will result in injury. I'm not advocating ballerinas have the the half-starved bony look but there's a reason that the international standard for a ballerina is to look long, thin and toned. Some of it is aesthetic - how your lines look on stage, how the corps look together, but the other half of it is being able to do the routine repeatedly, have the stamina for it and to make your lines long and elegant - and then hold them.

On her profile, her height and weight are listed as follow : 5'5 , 48 kg ( 105 lbs ). She must have gained a significant amount of weight since her retirement because she looks nowhere near close to 105 lbs. At her height of 5'5, she would look extremely skinny at 105 lbs. It happens to a lot of athletes. You get used to eat large amount of food because you burn it all during training. When you stop training, you need to change your eating habits or you will gain a lot of weight.

Connie Kim I do see other ballerinas, that's why I said I don't like the industry's ideals in general. I didn't specify Korea in my comment. Also just because it is that way doesn't make it natural or right. Some girls literally look bony but others are passable. Like in this video most are passable except the girl at 2:05, next to xiao chenng. She is pretty and I like her, but in one of the other videos, that showed her back and shoulders..it looked like there was no flesh there. It was weird to see. I would say she needs a little bit more weight. Her height makes hard for her. I guess that can't be helped. It's not just the girls, many of the guys are the same. They too need to be slightly more heavier, it would help in picking up the girls too. The guy for youngjae was on the thin side and kinda short (I know it's for partner size thing but picking a guy that was a little more tall wouldn't be a huge propblem and may have helped. But anyway the industry has been running for years now and there werent any major problems (except maybe they faint more easily and have a higher risk for osteoporosis). I guess I just feel concerned that's all.

I don't think the point of it was him telling her she needs to lose weight because she's overweight or doesn't look good. I think the point was that, at that point, she didn't have the ballet look. The point is that ballet as a whole requires you to have the stamina, to be able to make the long and slender looking lines with your body and hold them. Anyone at a serious ballet audition would say the same, probably more harsh and the point of this show was them attempting to for all intents and purposes seriously pursue getting into this show to perform as a ballerina.

There are many dancers who diet constantly and take 30+ hours of training a week (like myself) and hardly see any result. Granted a lot of us (also like myself) aren’t heavy to begin with, but not as slim as the ideal(I’m petite to begin with). I remember one audition I was cut from, I was cut because I didn’t fit into the costumes the company had premade because my waist measurement was too big by 2/3 an inch. If that’s enough to discourage me into transitioning from full time ballet to full time jazz and contemporary, I’m sure that’s enough to discourage heavier girls who just can’t drop the weight to give up dance all together. The best thing to me about ballet training is the discipline behind it. Some are cut out for it and some aren’t, but a lot of girls who are willing are turned down because the industry won’t give them the opportunity to lose weight in a healthy time period, but will give it to the girl next to her because she’s a size 0 despite not being able to even properly execute a triple turn. So yes ballerinas should be slim, but being so slim to the point of sickness has been a huge unspoken problem in the dance world. Now dancers like misty copeland are giving credit to the slightly bigger-built performers like myself and it’s great to see all these years later.

Bby Riss I see your point and agree with you. But what I meant was that a dancer should put effort into losing weight instead of blaming it on their genes. I also agree that a ballerina can’t be stick thin as they need muscle to actually execute the moves however it is usually better for a ballerina to be slim.

As someone who dances I ran across this issue multiple times. When I was in middle school I would not eat for days. I was always a little more chunky even at my lowest weight. However, I was not diagnosed with an ED, but I’m trying to get better. I gained 15 pounds. I’m at a healthy weight, but I’d love to lose 20. Since I’m carrying more than what I’m comfortable with. ((I’d still remain at a healthy weight if I lost 20Ibs btw.)) So now I’m eating healthier. Hopefully by time fall dance season starts I’ll slim down. I’m not saying that she has an ED, just sharing my story. I hope none of you fall down the same path I did. Stay healthy! :)

She’s so beautiful I don’t see why anybody should be body shamed for a passion they love and especially if they’re great at it and have amazing skills(like her) the auditions were already nerve wracking enough (from what I’ve heard) and she did a phenomenal job. I understand that for professional ballerinas, you have to be in a certain range of weight (according to our society) but this is ridiculous she is not obese, and either way, you shouldn’t cut someone out in things like this if they’re overweight or underweight *especially* if they have great skill in what they do.

Ballerinas have to be thin guys! There is a certain type of body needed to be a balerina. Although its difficult, all balerinas/os, know that they have to be thin/ strong. Her body type is a average person's body weight, but its not a ballerina. When he said it, i was like woah too, but he's in the ballet industry, its totally acceptable to tell someone to lose weight.

faduma mohamed she's healthy, but she has thicker n shorter limbs than desired to be a ballerina. Losing more weight could help her look better and more graceful dancing on stage and show off better body lines.

if you're thinking that what the judges said was "hard" or "unnescesary" you really don't know nothing about ballet standars.

I prefer a ballerina that looks like her than one that is way too skinny..some of those ballerinas get eatiing disorders because they are told to lose weight...It's sad how they think u need to be skinny in order to be famous or good...why doesn't he lose some weight 😒

I don't see why everyone is shocked.. I mean every ballet teacher will tell you the same it's just a rule. That doesn't mean to eat one meal a day but following a proper diet.
