Geumgangsan (금강산) pronunciation guide: First syllable 'geum' (금): The 'g' (ㄱ): The voicing starts later than an English 'g' so it sounds like a 'k' to English speakers, but it must be pronounced without any aspiration (the air sound caused by the friction of the air passing through the small gap) or it will make the sound which is transcribed as 'k'. The 'eu' (ㅡ) represents a single vowel which does not have anything similar in English. It's a high mid vowel with lips spread, if you know what that means. Try to say the vowel in 'Luke' (not 'look') while forcing your lips to stay spread. (They are spread when you say 'i' as in hit.) It's still not exactly right, but it's pretty good and as close as we can get when starting from English pronunciation. It will take some practice. The 'm' (ㅁ) is pretty much just like in English. Second syllable 'gang' (강): The 'g' (ㄱ) is just like in the first syllable. This is difficult for English speakers, who will want to continue the voicing from the 'm' directly into the 'g'. However the vocal chords must stop momentarily at the onset. The 'a' (ㅏ) sounds like 'are' in received pronunciation (the way Queen Elizabeth would say it). The 'ng' (ㅇ) is pretty much like 'ng' in English spelling (eg. 'king'). Third syllable 'san' (산): The 's' (ㅅ) is pretty much like in English. The 'a' (ㅏ) is like the 'a' in the second syllable except that, because of the 's', this one starts 'breathy', a bit like a whisper. The 'n' (ㄴ) is pretty much just like in English. There is no word stress in Korean, so all the syllables are spoken with equal length and emphasis. Be especially careful not to lengthen the last syllable. Keep it short, the length is like 'sun', not like 'sahn'. The second syllable tends to be spoken at a higher pitch than the first, and the last syllable at a lower pitch than the first. Fortunately, Korean is not a tonal language, so even if you totally mess up the pitches, it makes no difference to meaning or comprehension. It will just sound not quite perfect.

No doubt Paul Potts is a great singer, but some of his pronunciation was quite off, especially the vowels. He probably hasn't actually studied Korean though, so it was a good effort. For example, 우 오 and 어 seemed to swap around at random, and they all seemed to be substitutes for 으, which I didn't hear clearly even once. I found it kind of distracting and couldn't enjoy listening as much as I should have been able to.

Well yeah, I made similar comments actually about pronunciation spoiling it a bit. I think he should have had more guidance and training, but knowing Korea I'll bet he didn't get as much time as he wanted to prepare. As a foreigner myself, I didn't pick up on the lack of emotion at first, but I just watched again after reading your comments and I agree, he looks and sounds like he is just doing his job, where as Ali is singing from the heart.
