What makes this performance so great is that Sohyang didn't _outshine_ the message of the song. She didn't make it about her - she told the story and delivered it in a way that made you appreciate not just her voice, but the whole composition, and the music. Even though damn she *SANG* , her artistry painted the picture of Arirang; not her face.

Meowmeow Yoongi So Hyang is a 40 year old South Korean vocalist with roots in gospel, but she can and has sung many genres. She is known for her phenomenal vocal technique and control that has allowed her to develop easily the best upper register that has ever existed. She’s one of the best vocalists of all time and she’s probably the best in the world right now. To make things even more impressive, she’s also a cancer survivor and constantly struggles with other health issues including pneumonia, liver disease, and a heart condition. Nonetheless, her voice continues to improve despite her already being in her 40s. She doesn’t have any social media and has purposely avoided global stardom, but you can stay up to date on her by joining one of many fan groups on Facebook.

I'm a Korean. 'Arirang' means 'contact' or 'to meet'. 'Arariyo' means 'I miss you' or 'lovesickness'. Korea is the only divided country in the world. Many families were torn apart by the war. Dokdo is the easternmost island in Korea. It was the first land invaded when it became a Japanese colony. For Koreans, Dokdo is a symbol of sovereignty. 'Baekdusan' is the highest mountain in North Korea and 'Hallasan' is the highest mountain in South Korea, It is also the farthest north and south.

No! We don't need Disney to tell our own culture, we've been successful at doing that ourselves. Let the Koreans represent, we don't need no white people telling our stories for and to us.
@kindredkate89404 жыл бұрын
Axis Boise I agree with part of your statement and disagree with the other. I agree that the Korean culture should not be misrepresented in a Disney film, which is pretty probable if it were to happen. However, I think it’d be a great thing if it was represented correctly. Then, not only would Koreans, Korean-Americans, and Koreans all over the world feel represented in one of the biggest and most successful transnational corporations in the world, but also people of other cultures could understand the Korean culture better. If it’s done correctly, I think it would be really awesome! That’s my opinion anyway.
@axisboise4 жыл бұрын
Kindred Kate Like I said, Koreans are doing it already: kpop, kdrama, variety shows, and recently film, are gateways for people learning the culture. Despite kpop and kdrama painting an over-romanticized version of the culture, at least it's done by korean companies; not some culture-stealing transnational corporation. They don't need money-hungry Disney to "represent" the culture. And if Disney wants to make a movie/disney princess representing Koreans, then have both American-Koreans and Koreans create and supervise and evaluate everything. These people who "researched" my Polynesian heritage and still ended up with a whitewashed versions of Moana and Maui. I don't trust them.

My father was found abandoned by an unknown policeman in Seoul in the early 70s. In 1975 he was put on a plane to Sweden and brought up as a Swede. I love my Swedish grandparents and they have given all of us the best of lives, but there is a wound of something missing and it hurts. In 2016 we all (my grandparents too) traveled to Seoul and it was my father's first time back in his home country. He had nightmares every night, calling out for his mother not to leave him... With the smells, sounds and views of Korea he suddenly remembered young children in a crowded room, a young adult woman's warm embrace and he remembered sadness and poverty. Of course we are not true Koreans, we don't speak the language and we don't know the cultural and social codes. Knowing this was hurtful, but everyone was friendly and very open minded to us and our origin. We went back to Sweden after a couple of weeks and I felt more alienated than I had ever done before. I am a teacher and live a very Swedish life. But I constantly get the question "where are you from?" or "you look a bit Asian!" and when I say "I'm from Sweden" it is always met with confusion. After a rough day in 2018 of feeling particularly in between two cultures, this video popped up in my feed and it woke a sense of belonging and feeling of home that I almost never had felt for a country before. I played it for my father when I went home to visit my parents and 3 words in he just broke down crying. Nowadays Arirang is very important to me and it makes me a bit sad but it also strengthens me every time I hear it.

She's conveying the history of Korea. It begins in peaceful harmony when both nations were united and then the violin begins to weep and she wails with grief conveying the destruction that came during the war that left both nations divided. She then began to lead the audience to sing together in unison signaling the hope that North and South Korea will one day be united again as a family. It's really amazing the way she transformed a simple folk song into an EPIC masterpiece with her dazzling skill.

Arirang is one of the most oldest korean tranditional songs in Korea. Arirang is not just any tradition song it's a very typical one to korean people. Dokdo is symbolized as a guardian of korean territory (it is a small island by Korea) In this song "hill" means hardship or advisory. Arirang is not a place of a name of an actual hill. Some scholars have said that arirang is just a beloved phonetic by Koreans. The term is possibly referring to Korea itself or a feeling of sadness. Korea suffered a lot of hardship because of Japan's Imperialism in the 18th century. In that time, Koreans sang this arirang from the sadness from losing their country and. "Let's cross this arirang hill" means let's over come our hardship together. There are many versions of it, too. This version she is singing Arirang Alone (홀로알리랑) has undertones of reunification between north and south korea - "our hearts will flow as one" and "baekdusan to hallasan". Baekdu is a mountain in North Korea/China border and Halla mountain is the mountain on the southern tip of the Korean peninsula.
