I come from a seaport town in Massachusetts. There was a fad of floating homes back in the late 60s and into the 70s. The state really hates homes built on floats, they can't over-tax your property, or require building permits, or control what you do on your property if your house isn't on land and they aren't allowed to tax the sea..

So I am disabled and in my state it's legal to garden in the front yard. I started growing some vegetables in buckets and pots and the city came against me claiming that roaches would hide under the containers. Fine, I got rid of most of them because I cannot afford a fine. I put down cardboard and mulch to go ahead and kill all the grass, and now there's a ton of roaches living in the mulch! What's funny is I never saw any when I was moving the containers. Oh and the guy actually asked me "well just how many vegetables do you need to eat?" I didn't even have that many! Insanity. At least peasants were allowed to grow their food during the middle ages.

Okay I see people in the comments don't understand so I'll explain it. 1. The boxes on the roof are solar panels 2. Has a built-in water pump filter they don't drink it but they can bathe in it. 3. Usually the government has to dispose of waste material or trash properly. 4. International laws prevent them from charging waste disposal fee. 5. Cannot tax anything underwater. 6. SF residents are always keen to deal with the homeless issue until they find out dealing with it may involve slight damage their rapidly rising property values (as if an increased homeless population doesn't do that) then suddenly they oppose new housing and support initiatives. While there's about 40 years of programs with misguided rationales and lackluster apathy we really gotta thank Mayor Lee for bending over backwards to court techbros and luxury development and allowing social nets to break apart. Turns out the solution to the homeless issue isn't another skyscrapper charging $4k for a 1br or office buildings that are more clout flexes for companies than actual productivity spaces.

I agree up to a point. If you’re in low population area libertarian ideals work great, but once people are required to share resources safety becomes a community issue. If my neighbor wants to be a slob and raise swine and heap industrial waste (“still waiting for scrap prices to go back up”) and their actions seep into the aquifer the community uses, the burning trash pile means I can’t go outside without choaking on the fumes, the rats start raiding my yard, etc. then their safety is very much effecting me. Even when it comes to medical issues, the extra drain on resources adds up significantly. It’s like saying not to treat poor people for TB or HepC, yeah it’s not your problem until you notice that cough isn’t going away. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Seeing oneself as insular hurts self and others

Perhaps yes, but there's also issues with this becoming an ongoing thing... that house is going to break down and collapse into the water eventually, and the state will have to deal with it... imagine that on a larger scale and it very quickly becomes a massive issue, esp for the wildlife. Even boats meant for that environment have to be resurfaced often and etc... which is why the cost of boat ownership is insanely high.

I looked into floating homes and asked some owners in Port of Redwood City, Ca Bay Area. The monthly mooring fee wasn't much lower than apartment rents and the fee is based on the size of the water displacement of the home. I didn't ask about floors because all had a second floor, but some had a third one and I wonder if that increases the fee? The large ones have concrete floats (yes concrete) which make a complete basement too. The floating homes rest on the sea floor when the tide is out and can become damaged from hitting debris that wanders down below it, so owners have to hire a private diver to inspect the floating hull. So, even though older smaller homes were going for $60k-$80K back around 2010, the monthly costs can be more than renting an apartment.

Boats don't sit on the ground, so aren't taxed at the same rate, they literally have no foundation I work on boats, I build boats, all kinds of boats for a living, do you even have a clue what it would take to capsize one of these? OBVIOUSLY NOT! The amount of bells, whistles and alarms that would go off in the event of a slight degree in shift, or a little bit of water in the bilge would wake the dead and even the deaf could hear it for gawd sakes! They are built better than you land based home! Why? Because we worry about safety as well as quality! Time for a tax strike on April 15. The problem is the government is one step ahead and withholds most taxes throughout the year. So 50-75% of the population would just be boycotting filing and receiving their refund. Realistically they shouldn’t even have taxes if they are just going to print money every time they need it.
