You can't restructure contracts in the NBA. Only way to sort of do that would be if a player is heading into their player option year, they could opt out of their player option & re-sign for less. And if you trade him, its lottery time... So you better hope the picks you get back are great since you don't have your picks left. And realistically the picks won't be good, because terrible teams aren't going to trade a pick for an old KD. Its going to be late pick they get back. Worst case scenario is to lose KD, get a great draft position just for that pick to go elsewhere. You don't want to be bad when you don't have your pick, ask the Nets how that worked out for them... They built the Celtics core by sucking when BOS had their picks.

OKC would still have like $7M in c cap space (depending on who the other role player is) plus the MLE to fill out the roster. KD has one of the most overrated legacies ever. He's played with nothing but hall of fame caliber players his entire career, a majority of them in their primes, yet the only time he's been able to win was when he joined a team who had already won one prior to him joining, & also won after he left. He would be ringless if he hadn't gone to GSW. Obviously he's a great player, probably the greatest scorer ever imo, because his jumper at that height is so unstoppable, but the guy is basically just a stats getter. His stats do not necessarily translate to winning chips. He doesn't really lead teams. He doesn't really make his teammates better. He just goes out there & scores.
