When publishing KDP medium content books and low content books on Amazon it is important to know exactly what your book is. Many people get confused and publish one type of book when, in fact, it is the other. This could have implications in terms of potentially costing you extra money for an ISBN or a delay in the publication of your book. We look at these implications a bit more closely, what your options are and how to determine whether your book is low content or medium content.

Thanks Paul. Because of your tutorials I have published 2 notebooks. I knew they may never see the light of day and they haven't it was a learning experience. My question or observation is that it would seem that to make any income from KDP you need to 1, make medium or high content books and 2, you need to have about 500 - 1000 out there. Also key words are crucial. An area I am still to grasp.

Keywords are crucial yes. In terms of number of books it depends what your skill levels are prior to coming into this business. If you are an illustrator or graphic designer with decent skills it will take you a lot less books. If you are a complete beginner it's going to take time and practice to create books that attract buyers.

I would say probably. But if you don't tick the box and they say it is then all you need to do is just select it and re-publish.

I would like to point out that getting a free ISBN from Amazon means you can only sell your books on Amazon and will be unable to build a brand around your books. I've thought about this question as I am working on four different activity books that I can build a brand around. For me, getting my own ISBN is nothing more than the cost of doing business.

the british library has advice for getting ISBNs and ISSNs for your books, they Reccomend the Nielsen UK ISBN store.

Yes, you would need to tick the low content book option. As for the 2 categories to choose, I'm afraid you just have to go throough the lists and pick two that you think are most appropriate.

Canada has free ISBNs. They have a requirement that you send them a book if you sell 4+. I think Sweden also has free ISBNs.

In a live chat I had with KDP customer service, I was told coloring books, word search books, and books to fill in like kids activity books are considered low content. 🤷

They require contact information within the country you are buying the ISBN's from.

We get free ISBN ( USBN ) in Canada. You need to apply for them and indicate your publisher name and how many ISBN #'s you will use. Not sure why you need to give them all the info.

I would think you should be able to do that. You would just add the ISBN and re-publish.

This Error Coming please help to solve : We checked your files and found issues you need to fix before your book can be published on KDP: Interior We noticed your book’s low-content classification was incorrect, so we corrected it. To publish your book, please 1) return to the “Edit Paperback/Hardcover Content” tab of your title setup, 2) update the “Print ISBN” option, and 3) re-submit your book. The low-content checkbox in the “Categories” section of title setup should be selected if your book contains little or no interior content, such as a journal, notebook or planner. Low-content books have different ISBN and distribution options, so it’s important to classify them correctly. Learn more about low-content books. Where possible, we give pages numbers with examples. To make sure your entire book meets our guidelines, please review your entire manuscript file and fix all issues.

Paul when you publish a book in the UK, do you deposit a copy to the British library? I’ve just released my first book and some one said I have to. Looking online it does say “If you're a publisher, you need to send one copy of every print publication you produce within one month of its publication. “

No, I've never done that. I don't think they'd want hundreds of low content books being sent to them. As far as I know, that would be the responsibility of the publisher anyway, which would, in this case be KDP.

I phoned Nielsen and asked. 🤷‍♀️ Mine was a children's picture book, but I asked about medium content books whilst I was on the phone. The person I spoke with said they want it if it has an ISBN (if you use the free one provided by KDP, they do this for you). I'm also pretty sure they don't want every notebook ever made - but if you want to use an ISBN, it's probably worth checking. 👍

I've not come across that but I think you would have to unpublish it and re-publish a new listing. You might be able to go into your listing, uncheck the low content box and then re-publish but I'm not 100% certain.

KDP considers the book you're publishing as a low content book and not medium content.

There is an error somewhere. Check for any emails from KDP. It maybe your author name - often a keyword in it.

Tutorials about preparing and formatting high-content books (novel, poetry, non-fiction etc) seem to be as rare as hen's teeth and yet there are endless uploads that just talk about low/medium content books. There are HUNDREDS of them, most of which are near-duplicates of others. Even this upload took whole wedges of time to talk about ISBN's/ASBN's . . . that's yet another topic that is covered all over the place. As for buying ISBN's, Nielsen is the UK source. Does anyone know of anyone who ignores all the endlessly repeated themes and just focuses on the process of working with high-content texts prior to uploading to KDP? I came across one but it was very muddled and the narration was very indistinct.
