I imagine that Key Hue Quan at the Oscar’s thought about his past. About how he immigrated into the United States of America and was teased a lot about being Vietnamese and being Asian. But he changed when his brother was auditioning for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom he was asked if he wanted to try, and Quan responded, “sure, why not?” And when he did he eventually got chosen. Now for the film Everything Everywhere All At Once, it has 7 Oscar awards and Quan is nominated as supporting actor role. Such a great guy 😊

Not only was the number of Asian roles a challenge, but it's also challenging when someone becomes famous as a child. Many times they can't blend seamlessly into an adult actor. And, really I LOVE this actor as such a wonderful person, but have to admit he has a very atypical speech pattern, and that probably narrows available roles too. But despite all of that, his character and his talent came through. I loved seeing him with Ford and seeing Spielberg seeing this. How momentous and I can't wait to see him in more roles that do justice to his talent!

I do not know how to explain my feeling as seeing him winning and yea his speech in Oscar, and knowing what he deal with for years. I am happy for him and also feel the struggling he had and yes even live could be ups and downs and maybe due to our priorities, reasons some of us change, and give up our dreams. As heartwarming as this story is, the real test for whether there is any meaningful change going forward, will be the extent that there are acting opportunities for Asians (and, in particular - Asian males) when casting decisions are being made. It is notable that the two movies most commonly referenced as advancing Asian representation in film (Crazy Rich Asians, and now Everything Everywhere All At Once) both guaranteed Asian casting because of some central premise of the film (You can't easily cast white actors, when the Asian identity of the character is central to the premise of the film). Outside of such a premise, the reality that Ke Huy Quan faced is that (up to now) nobody in Hollywood wanted to cast Asian actors (in the case of Asian men - basically not at all, in the case of Asian women - generally only as sex objects). Indeed this prejudice is so strong that even where a character is written to be Asian, this can be 'retconned' to turn the character White (see: Marvel's 'Ancient One', which would have required hiring an Asian Male - rewritten to have a white female), or just have a White actress playing the role of a half-Asian character (see: Emma Stone in Aloha). Sometimes, the entire cast can be rewritten to be white - except for the villain, who stays Asian (see: Avatar, the Last Airbender). Or, the source material/context is conveniently ignored in order to have a white Actress (see: Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell). Which is not to say that any single decision to make a character White is necessarily wrong. However, when everyone does it, you end up with Ke Huy Quan's situation - where there are simply no opportunities for decades on end because you're Asian (I note that 'diversity' in media since the 90's up to maybe a few years ago in practice meant 'Black'). So the real test from this: For films/media where the race of the character isn't a central premise to the show, what opportunities exist for Asians?

Made two movies as a child; had a 30yr break; first film back is awarded an Oscar. But everyone is racist? So many great actors in great roles who were Asian; like in "The Last Emperor". So many actors never in their lifetime get an Oscar.

Ke Huy Quan is a perfect example of why I've never met a Vietnamese that I didn't like. They're such great people. They make the best of friends. So happy for Mr. Quan. I was 10 in 1980 so I lived the 80s as a teen to the fullest and I still remember enjoying watching his movies. So very happy for him.

Ke was amazing in his child performances. His characters were unique, and intelligent, and as a child, showed me that even someone so young could do amazing things, or invent. It was our loss all these years, to not see his shining face on our screens. It's wonderful to see him back!

siempre he leido en lecturas filosoficas y de crecimiento personal que se debe ser como un nino. El nino se sorprende, es feliz y no le importa demostrarlo, es espontaneo etc etc , pensaba como seria posible siendo adulto sentir como ese nino del que hablan y viendo a ke Huy Quan realmente entendi lo que tantas veces he leido. He llorado, he reido he sentido su emocion de una manera tan sincera y profunda.... verlo como al abrazar a Ford realmente era el nino que lo estaba abrazando y no le importo quien lo veia simplemente expresaba lo que sentia. QUE ENVIDIA
