I love watching the hulas & I only wish I knew more aboyut the stories they are telling, the hand gestures, & what they mean. I am so glad that Hawai'ians were so strong & rescued their culture from the European invasions & missionaries intent on "reforming" them. What an amazing triumph!

This! I would love a subtitles of some sort explaining the story as the dance progresses. Evan a kind of visual dictionary explaining what the movements mean would be great. At least for this dance I recognize "Pele" so I assume the dance is about the Goddess.

Amazing the training this halau lives and breathes. If viewers arent familiar or arent from Hawaii-nei, I encourage a search here by the name of this halau- Ke kai o kahiki, you might find a short video called something like the big story which offer a quick overview of training and lifestyle these men live daily. Amazing dedication & talent. What would our ancestorsʻ the aliʻi say? Theyd have chosen these as front line warriors for Kamehameha armies- in this absence weʻre probably lucky to enjoy the talents without the risks of losing any to battles.

How can you not appreciate this? As a foreigner (not from the US either) the language itself sounds so beautiful. Not only do you get an amazing story telling through their fluid but strong movements, you can really see why warriors would have been chosen through this. I dont want to assume to know anything that i dont, that would be plain disrespectful, but i just want to say i appreciate and respect the beauty, strength, heritage and more, which is blantant in these performances. It makes you wonder how it was back before.

I can't agree with their garments. Of course, it would not be practical that they wore tangas but maybe a straw skirt would be more appropriate and realistic. These dances really call some felling from inside us. It is rather different from watching a France XVIII century France king court party, for example.
@PhotoLukeHawaii

Robert Mac Allister I somehow feel like what they are wearing is far more powerful and royal than a grass skirt unless it’s beefed up and layered somehow. I’m no expert though I just love the culture and appreciate it! Thanks for watching! Have a great day! Aloha 😁🤙🏽

Great comments. Hawaii is truly blessed for embracing a multi-ethnic community. Ms. Belva Spelling, wife of the US Navy Campus manager in Cubi Point, Subic City and Godmother to my daughter, drove us around the Hawaii tourist spots when I migrated in 1985. Whenever someone visits me in Honolulu, we take the Roberts Hawaii tourist bus to the North Shore. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a self-sustaining event venue. It sits on land donated by Brigham Young University. The students from the University work in the Center. I will always think of the Center as a venue when we propose the hosting of events in Hawaii. I have gathered event directories from CITEM's Manila FAME for the outsourcing of souvenir items. Aloha and Mahalo nui loa.

ALOHA NUI to all my Hawaiian brothers and sisters! The amazing dancers, mesmerizing Ipu (gourd drums) beats and uniquely fabulous and clear chant singing is a remarkable and priceless treasure...for all of humanity to enjoy! I also think that the outdoor setting was a great idea, since this way, the usual indoor noise of the audience does not drown out the singing and the ipu beats; I wish that the hula groups would do more performances in this very same manner; and, it might even sound yet more amazing at the Koki Sanctuary! Viva Hawai'i! I went to the Oahu Hawaiian island many years ago and fell in love with the magical place, its culture, people and dances! I especially enjoyed the Polynesian Cultural Center experience, the fierce winds of Pali Nuuanu, Waimea Falls, and of course, the fantastic view of the Diamond Head volcano from Waikiki beach; I hope to some day return and visit the big island of Hawai'i, so that I can also enjoy the magical sounds of the Kokis, while they sing their lovely call ( ke mele ) to the Hawaiian people and the Goddess Pele herself. WhiIe in Oahu, I felt like I was in my own native Puerto Rico and have since become aware, while doing research to work on a book about the long, westward journey of the Polynesian diaspora, that we the Puerto Rican people, are also part Polynesian; the account of the fantastic migration, is concentrated mainly on the settlement of Easter Island, which I was able to trace all the way back to the original tribes of the region of Tainan, in Taiwan. Their skillful sailing from island to island, took them to Tahiti and the rest of the Marquesas Archipelago, including the Sub Archipelago of Hiva, from where the Easter Islanders ( Te Tangata Rapa Nui ) originated, New Zealand, Hawai'i, etc. The journey finally culminated in the precolombian island of Puerto Rico; once there, the Polynesians eventually mixed with Native Americans that had arrived on the island, known as Boriken, then and still also now, from North, Central and South America. That makes me, proudly, part Polynesian and explains why I felt so much at home in Hawai'i, to the point that I did not want to leave! Upon my return from Oahu,, I brought back one of those splendid gourd drums (ipu) and taught myself how to play it. It is hard to believe that the misguided missionaries tried to stamp out the beautiful Hawaiian dances, by forbidding their practice for over 50 years, and tried to obliterate the incredibly beautiful Hawaiian language and cultural identity, as well! That must have been a terrible and grueling ordeal for the victimized Hawaiian aina ancestors of that time and my heart goes out to them; in the name of humanity, I can only say that I am so very, very sorry! However, I am glad that in the long run, the missionaries were unsuccessful in their thoughtless and destructive efforts! They did the same thing in many other Polynesian Islands, ironically, in the name of religion! May the Creator, Yucaju, as the Taina civilization in Boriken called him, forgive them for their sinful ways! Unfortunately, that was not the case with regards to the native inhabitants of my own island, after the arrival of Christopher Columbus and his entourage of European conquerors, who mercilessly prayed upon the friendly Taina civilization natives, eventually slaughtering most of them and enslaving the rest to dig for the "precious gold" they so much lusted for and worshipped!; In the process, they destroyed the Taino culture, religion and spoken tongue, as well as the precious golden works of art that were melted into gold bars and shipped to Europe; hence, we unfortunately and sadly lost our very own indigenous language, which may have sounded like Hawaiian, since it too had very few s and r sounds. Christopher Columbus himself, described the Taino language as the most beautiful he had ever heard; it is so ironic, that he then set out to destroy the very language that he had praised, and all in the name of greed and conquest; it is just sickening and makes no sense whatsoever! Regardless, today, however, there remains a scattering of Taino words which enrich the Castilian Spanish language, and have also been passed on to English, French, and other languages; such words include canoa (canue), hamaca (hammock), maiz, which was originally maisi (maize / corn), huracan (hurricane), yuca or casabe (casava), barbacoa (barbecue), chocolate / cacao (chocolate /cocoa), Caribe (Caribbean), etcetera. That is why I steadfastly feel that it is so important that all Hawaiian children, whether of native Hswaiian stock, haolie, hapa haolie, or otherwise, be encouraged to feel proud of, and taught the indigenous native language of Hawai'i from an early age, so that they can master the knowledge of, and gain the proper pronunciation and accent of the mother tongue; if this is not being done in the schools, then it ought to be implemented, and mandated by the state as well as the Hawaiian people themselves, without reservation. In Paraguay, everyone, whether of indigenous Amerindian origin or not, is required to learn the native language of Guarani; in fact, a Colombian friend of mine's daughter, married a Paraguayan of German decent who spoke Guarani, Spanish and German. Now, that is what I call: a highly progressive society! Furthermore, I am adamant in the belief that the native Hawaiian language and identity must be preserved at whatever cost! While in Puerto Rico, we can never recover our own beautiful Taina language, we are certainly on time to save the precious Hawaiian aina tongue, as well as all the other languages that are at risk of disappearing in the world (or, henua: as they say in Te Pito O Te Henua / Mata Kite Rangi / Isla de Pascua / Easter Island)! I myself am fully bilingual, in spite of the enormous pressure placed on me, as well as my own people, while growing up in the state of New Jersey, to make us monolingual, in English only, That has always been the usual and shortsighted practice in this society with regards to all people who speak a second language, as well as immigrants from other lands! However, I would defiantly have it no other way, since I have always been aware, that, not only the very constitution, but more importantly, my own personal conviction gives me the right to speak whatever language I want and whenever I please! I am proud and grateful to have been able to master two languages equally fluently. There is just something special about being able to communicate in two languages, since each language offers a different and unique perspective on the culture it represents, as well as life itself, in general! I would now like to take this opportunity to ask the people of Hawai'i to please try to learn to love our beloved and innocent Koki frogs as we do; they arrived in Hawai'i in the egg stage in a shipment of decorative potted plants imported from Puerto Rico in 1987, and hatched there by no choice of their own, as if it was meant to be, and they have known no other world! They are now as Hawaiian as the lei, the ukulele, the hula, the gourd drum ( Ipu ) and even the sacred Pele, and are sure to also enrich the music and hula dances with their enchanting singing in the background! In their original endemic island of Puerto Rico, they are regarded as sacred and are enjoyed by everyone throughout the archipelago, and we would never consider harming them in any way! In Puerto Rico, originally, there were 17 different species, but 2 are believed to have gone extinct, including the golden Koki. There they form part of the food chain and even make up the diet of some of the bird species, including free roaming chickens. I went to Puertp Rico one month before hurricane Maria struck the island, causing devastating destruction, and one evening, while I was laying out under the palm trees in Rincon, I remember hearing the wonderful sound of the surf in front of me with the chorus of the Kokis in the shrubbery in back of me, and it really felt like I was in... heaven! Also, please save and protect the endangered Hawaiian Nene; some of them should be moved to an island where the Asian mongoose, the main predator of their eggs and young chicks, was wisely not allowed by the people of that island to be introduced from their native India, by the sugar industry farmers to control rodents in the sugar cane fields. Mahalo nui, and long live our beautiful Hawaiian aina, from: Luis Enrique Ruiz ( Ruizart ) of the island of the enchanting and sacred Koki: Boriken Taina. Blessings, and...ALOHA NUI LOA O KE KANAKA AINA O KE HONUA!

Rui Zart thank you for watching and sharing your knowledge and aloha with us! Yay Puerto Rico but so sad about all the hurricane damage. We are glad to you appreciate so much of the Hawaiian culture as we do and awesome you find out you are a part of it as well. It's funny you mention the Koki frogs! When we go to the Big Island and the sun starts to set, you can hear them and we love it, lol! On Oahu I haven't heard them yet but, I hear they are around. Anyways take care and have a great holidays! Aloha =)

@@PhotoLukeHawaii Mahalo nui to you for your kind words and I am so glad that you also enjoyed the enchanting Koki frogs! I also love photography and took many pictures in the week that I was in Hawaii. The reason why I mentioned the Kokis is because there seems to be a misguided effort in Hawaii to try to eradicate them by very cruel means, which only serve to poison and harm the environment, simply because some people don't seem to understand that the Kokis are actually a harmless benefit to the islands, since they control other harmful pests, such as mosquitoes, stinging centipedes, cockroaches, etc. Anyway, happy holidays to you and may the new year bring you much success and lots of happiness too, ALOHA!
