It's called cognitive dissonance: people have a gap between their self-perception and how the environment perceives them. In Keanu's mind, he was killing it; that beautiful boy thought he's so good looking and so many people adore him because he's so sexy, so there is zero reason he can't do anything, including a perfect British accent. His mind protected his fantasy, taking him along for the ride lol. That's why it's important to have honest close friends that can keep you grounded.

Hopkins was the only actor who came across as natural in the whole movie. I don't care who you are, if a door closes on its own and your host floats towards you, some historically appropriate version of "WTF" I'd coming out of your mouth. Followed by "get the f**k away from me, you goblin..."

I came here from a clip of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow and watching that and this back-to-back, it makes me wonder whether Johnny Depp was supposed to play (or at least considered for) the role of Harker in this, but the studio couldn’t get him, so they had to make do with Reeves instead.

Very good instinct. This was confirmed on a KZbin comment a while ago. Keanu Reeves was picked because he was a bigger star than Depp at the time (it would’ve been poetic had he been the lead as he was Wyder’s boyfriend at the time).

Yes. Coppola initially wanted Johnny Depp as Jonathan Harker (funny since at the time, he and Winona Ryder were an item). But, the studio vetoed that as at the time Keanu Reeves was the bigger star aka the bigger box office draw.

@@Spiri7ualShi7 Well they were supposed to put on English and Irish accents depending on their class and kingdom. Frodo, Gandalf and Saruman had an upper class London accent. Sam had a West Country accent as he was working class. Gondorians had 'normal' London accents. Pipping kept his Scottish accent. Eowyn had a Irish accent for some reason, not sure why. But they were all supposed to sound like they were from Celtic countries.

@@scinatit In over 20 years, I've never heard anyone describe Eowyn as having an Irish accent, nor did it ever register during all those viewings. And while Viggo's accent may have slipped in some of his earlier scenes, he had tremendous charisma and gravitas, and wasn't stiff and bland like Harker.

I love this movie. Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman are phenomenal. I liked everything about it, even Keanu's accent. I wanted to see the part where Mina is turning on the train and he says, "Mina, stay with me. Please?"

That's cool. I'm sure it's at least semi-passable, but I've heard different from many other Brits, and even as an American, it seems highly exaggerated to the point of sounding very off. Not in every scene, but there are some where he just sounds ridiculous. It's specifically his line "bloody wolves chasing me through some blue inferno!" that is the main issue when it comes to his attempt at any sort of a British accent

You see Hopkins lighting up the screen in this movie? The hammiest, cheesiest, least intimidating and least dashing of any Van Helsing ever. Cushing's Van Helsing was an eccentric, but Hopkins Van Helsing just does weird stuff to confuse others and put people at a distance. He's annoying and you just want to get back to the romantic stuff with Dracula and Mina, and I'm a GUY saying this. The relationship between Mina and Dracula was what made this film work in spite of 90% of the cast either not being talented enough or not giving a f.

I've wondered that myself, as a yank. Australian and British actors are often quite good at nailing the many types of American accents. But that's rarely the case with American actors trying to do Australian or British accents. Gary Oldman and Daniel Day Lewis tend to be able to nail all of the various different types of American accents in the roles they've portrayed.

I'm from the US, and it doesn't sound like there's any of the many American accents at all under the surface, it's just that even as an American, I can tell that his attempt at an Engilsh accent is very exaggerated and over done, in a pretty much silly way. Winona did a halfway decent job. I love Keanu, but he really needs the right roles. He's not as flexible as some of the greats, like Gary Oldman. This is one of my favorite horror movies though, so I just overlook it whenever I give it a rewatch.

He’s a star, not an actor. You can’t give Gary Oldman Neo and you can’t give Keanu Dracula or Joker, cause they’ll both screw the roles up. They have their own fields.
