I don't know how people weld. Such a skill beyond me. Much respect to you dude. Took me 2-3 hours just to keep the stick from touching the surface and get a continuous weld to last longer than 1 second. I knew much of the theory and knew what to do. I could program a bot to do it, if I had to, but my own maneuverability sucks. lol!
@BTN1979BoBo4 жыл бұрын
The "rub the point of the electrode" thing you do before each weld is really smart. Wonder why I never thought of that, or was told to do so, during my apprenticeship. It is so obvious tbh :) Love your stuff, and is often binging your videos. Thank you once again for your dedication, to make great content.

Hi Adam. park attachment looking good hope to see it in use soon . I was in Florida last week on holiday with my family to see that mouse . I had one day to choose what I wanted to do so I wanted to meet you and Keith Rucker. I did make the 5 hour trip from Kissimmi upto Tifton and got to shake Kieth by the hand but as the rain was so bad and it put lots of time on the trip I thought it best to get back to my family . The next time we come I will come and meet you if that's ok but as Kieth tells me Pensocola is a longer drive but if you're cooking I will make the trip. keep up with the videos as I told Kieth I have learnt so much from watching you all on you tube and it was cool and an honour see him in his shop . Cheers Richard. From Falmouth. Cornwall. UK

I agree on blasting it clean, use body putty to smooth it and paint it. Pacific Press and Shear used a really heavy filler sanding primer for prep. Had a source who got me some of it when I painted equipment that suffered from exposure and rust. It really filled and was a lot easier than Bondo. Was hard to spray. I used a pressure cup gun to do it.

If you just go over the edges between the stick welds and the work piece, with the TIG gun, adding no material, you get a smooth transition removing any ditches and edges, and the reheating also relieves a lot of the stress from the metal.
@rdon538 жыл бұрын
Adam, it's an interesting mixture of (precision) old school and 'precision' CNC work. In the short future I think there will always be a place for old school machining just like there is for smithing and wood working etc. boutique .I can imagine in the future you can order up a part like your parking attachment from a custom CNC company like Hitachi or Mitsubishi and have it delivered within a month. Things seem to move much faster these days.

Adam - great progress again and a great video. I noticed when you were pre-heating the part to weld both times you focused on the smaller metal parts, not the very large portion you are welding them to. Seems to me that the heat should be focused on the larger mass, which will in turn heat the smaller parts.

I have only played around a bit with MIG myself a long time ago, nobody teached me anything so the result was thereafter ;-) TIG would be fun to try and learn. I would probably paint it to match the K&T, even though shiny metal is nice. It seems like any exposed metal rusts there in Florida, so it would not be shiny for long :-)

Look's great. Maybe as you decide whether or not to paint. If you decide to paint, maybe some pinstripe{ing} will be an option. Just go down to your local BIG AUTO PARTS STORE, and take a look at some of the "TAPE Pinstripe{ing}," its cheap enough, try some out. After painting of course. My first try {with the Pinstripe{ing}} would be the part John made, on the side(s) (where John did no engraving) just run down the center, both sides, (all around the part) same for the parking attachment itself. Paint the parking attachment three different color's. My suggestion the big piece of round stock welded on; one color, the main body another color, and what you just welded on today another color. Just my 2 (two) cents worth. If you decide to go the 3 (three color option) you'll need some "FINE LINE TAPE" (found at an Autobody Supply Store, not cheap compared to other tape) because of the thickness of the paint bridging across the edge of the tape. HINT: as soon as the paint is "TACK/ DUST FREE," remove the Fine Line Tape, at a 45 (forty- five) degree angle, (creating a knife's edge) peeling it back against itself, i.e., the freshly painted surface of the tape, so as if you were trying to stick the painted surface(s) together. The Fine Line tape should be available in1/16" in. (0.0625,) 1/8" in (0.125",) and 1/4" in. (0.25") and some bigger size's. I would suggest the 1/4" in. Maybe your brother Alex might have some.

Just out of curiosity, what was rating of temp stick for your pre-heat? Think when you were walking the cup your rhythm kinda got broken there one time and it may have been caused by your cable lead drag! Just an observation, not trying to be "back seat driver", just mentioned it so others having the same problem, may have one thing to look for as a cause. Another great video Adam!
@Abom798 жыл бұрын
That's a 350 temp stick. 4140 should be a bit hotter for a preheat but it gets too uncomfortable to weld when it's that hot.

Hey Adam, (or any one else!) I just bought a cheap Chinese AC stick welder from a flea market and I CANNOT seem to get the damn spark started. I am using 6013 rods. The rod just keeps sticking to the work. I never stick welded before, only MIG. Does the fact that the machine is super cheap come into play at all? Or am I just this bad? Lol
@infoanorexic8 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's probably a combination of the two. Make sure the amperage is correct, and scratch to strike the arc rather than tap. Practice on some scrap first, until you get a feel for starting the arc. The quality of the welder might have something to do with it, so you might have to step the amperage up a notch to compensate. And, if it's as 'cheap' as it sounds, pay close attention to the duty cycle ratings, and make sure you give it it's cool down time. In High School, in metals and Ag Shop classes, they always insisted we start with 6011 rod. Not the easiest stuff to use and make it look good. I know that the car men at the rip track (where they repaired rail cars) had a preference for 6013. Because, as I was told, they worked with a lot of dirty metal and welded a lot of things that didn't have an ideal fit. Others may have more accurate details of what that rod is intended for.

In case you missed the other explanation, the K&T is normally a horizontal mill, but it has an accessory head for vertical milling ops. This head is a massive lump and requires something to lift it into mounting position. The parking attachment is designed to lift the head from its storage position on the back of the mill, swing around to the front and position it for mounting to the mill. Somewhere in Keith Fenners video archives he shows how this is done on his K&T.

I think it would be better to have deep V grooves cut into the weld joints and lay down a bunch of passes. I mean you have super thick steel plates and there is no way you are getting 100% penetration, it will be a weak link, the original casting is probably stronger/stiffer.
