Great find, I now keep records in totes, and there were 2 45's on the floor between 2 sets of totes for about a year, I had gotten them for a quarter each at an antique mall. I finally picked them up and out of curiosity looked them up on discogs and it turned out they were worth hundreds of dollars each. One was gospel one was blues. I didn't care for the clues record so I took it to one of my local record stores and got $250 store credit. I'll keep the other one. I thought they were worthless.

I had a coworker ask me for a favor years ago. As payment he gave me a box of his mom’s records and almost everyone was well played and the jackets were as bad. But there was one record that was NM. I swear she might have played it once. There was a slight wear on the top of the jacket but that was it. The Beatles 2nd edition Butcher Cover. Ringo’s black shirt shined ever so brightly. But this was 1982 when you hit garage sales & thrift stores for collectibles and paid 25¢ to $1. This was before eBay gave everyone access to collector’s prices. It was the greatest time to buy records. I had over 6000 albums and 1000 45’s mostly with pic sleeves. I don’t think I ever spent more than $15-$20 for anything.

I recently took an almost 30 year old Technics SL-QD2 turntable out of the closet. I spent a good amount of time getting the tonearm to behave correctly but I finally got it right. I bought a new stylus for the original Shure cartridge. Since all my albums are in pretty rough shape, I purchased the Beatles white album, remastered in stereo. The sound blew me away! The adjectives people use, warm, rich, full, definitely applied. I've had other people listen and they all agree. My next new album is a remastered Aqualung. I forgot how pleasing it is to handle an LP, cleaning it, cueing the tonearm, and enjoying the album art and extras. I have a lot of cd's but now I'm buying vinyl. A new turntable isn't far behind.

A retired band and music teacher friend gave me her late husband's (he was ALSO a retired band and music teacher) record collection, somewhere around 400 albums. It started with a box of mostly classical stuff which for the most part is not my thing, although I do listen to some. About 2/3 of the way through crate 1 of 4, I started finding prog rock album after prog rock album. Several Kansas albums, a handful of Yes albums, I think there was a copy of every Focus album, old pre-Phil Collins Genesis albums, Starcastle albums, and a TON of really good classic pop/rock stuff from the 70s and 80s. Nearly every record was in mint condition. A lot of this stuff I already had copies of... but there's a good thing to this aspect, too. I'm 59 and manage a music instrument store in Illinois. We have a part-time girl who is 17 who started getting into records last summer. She found a Garrard turntable at a local thrift shop, and since I had an extra receiver and a small set of A/D/S speakers I wasn't using, I gifted them to her, so she has a REALLY nice stereo system for someone her age, and I started passing along a TON of records to her that were duplicates of what I have for the most part, although she's a prog rock fan, too, and she LOVES Focus (or "yodel prog" as she calls them, LOL), so I handed her the entire Focus collection, and being that Kansas is my favorite band so I already have all their stuff on vinyl, I gave her all the Kansas albums as well. I probably have gained 150 albums at this point as did my co-worker, and I still have about 75 albums to sort through that I haven't had time to work on lately. I have been just amazed at how good the condition of the records are. MANY of the covers show a LOT of wear from being kept in wood "fruit crates" like many of us used to use, but the records so far have all been mostly excellent. I've been putting them in good quality outer sleeves and inner sleeves as I go through them so they won't encounter more damage either at my hands or my co-worker's from us storing/shelving them.

And the guy tells me that it's something they just got as a trade-in from one of their regular customers, and he hasn't even had time to go through it. Anyway towards the end of one of the stacks was a Yoko Ono remix album of her songs that was in fantastic condition. EDGE warps suck -- like a box left in the sun and only one inch warped on each record. Makes first track (or 2) unplayable because stylus flys out the groove. You can try to flatten with a couple bathroom tiles, a clamp, and a torch. Just enough heat might make it playable. Too much heat, might make it bubble up!
