The thing with yo-tsu is that you do not pronounce “tsu” so it’s just yo, especially because it’s a little tsu (っつ) right after yo and nothing is following. It means a fast break right after a word if it ends with it.

Thing is, if she spent many of her formative years here, she shouldn't make the simple mistakes she is making. She is a military kid, she probably went to American school on the base and only got the basic Japanese they teach there. That's not on her as a person, she's just not nowhere near fluent in the language in the way that Vogue tried to portray it in the video, and that upsets people. She may have learned (she studied for 8 years and lived there) and lost some it. She may had lived in an area that pronounces things differently, and has a regional accent. It almost looks like someone on the Vogue staff borked the romanized captions and Olivia felt like she had to go along with it. Even with shaky Japanese, it seems impossible to have grown up in Japan and 1) think "yotsu" is a thing, 2) not know that "よっ" IS a thing, and 3) not know the difference between a つ and a っ, even in an obvious context.
