Have both of these and the SP is more versatile than the Keeley, I have a keeley pedalboard and an Xotic pedalboard, there both excellent and work well if I had to choose a favourite it would be the SP given you have to spend a lot more time with it but once you find that sweet spot you just never want to turn it off.

Good review - have the SP. agree the Keeley was more articulate. But the noise floor! Didn’t read all the reviews but the noise is bugging me with the SP. and the Kelley wasn’t quiet either. Sigh. Compressors can do that, and amplify any signal / guitar noise. But I’m not sure the compression is worth it with that buzz! I could even hear it when you were playing - as I do when I’m using the SP. 😩

I A/B tested them and I like the Keeley just a bit more. It sounds a bit more natural, and is way more versatile with that single to humbucker switch. Though I like the size of the Xotic better. And the sustain is awesome.

The tone difference could probably be offset by using the internal dip switches inside the sp.

Im a huge fan of the Kelley compressor plus. I find if you run it at basically unity volume it somehow just makes every single thing in the chain better lol

Same, I had never owned one until this video and now I don't think I'm going back. I've become a little obsessed with compressors after all this!

Did you look at the switches on the inside of the SP?

Massive props for turning the blend to full comp. There are so many demos I could face plant the screen when theyre messing with the tone or attack and I really want to hear it but there biased way over to the clean side and the clean envelope is always going to overshadow the subtleties of the comps behaviour set like that. Great job. Did you find the hum/single thing made a perceived difference vs the internal attack setting of the sp? Took me a long time to realise I actually prefer slower attack. Ive got several comps but one I thought Id shift and never use was the mxr custom comp till I realised you can really slow it down more than a dyna and it just makes it that much more open. Ive got a wampler mini ego and its a lovely thing but I should have really got the big version with the full control set.

I have the Keeley Plus after using the original Barber Tone Press for years - I wanted a smaller footprint. At first I thought it was great. But that ‘articulation’ you hear is the low end being rolled off. It’s NOT transparent at all. This bugged me, I don’t want a compressor to impose a tonal change on the signal unless I want it to. The tone knob is useless in this regard, it really only seems to affect the higher frequencies- does nothing for trying to dial back in some of the missing low end. The Barber TP - now THAT was transparent. Looking at giving the SP a try, to me it did not sound darker as you say, the Keeley sounded brighter. You can do the same thing with a tone knob on your guitar - by choice - and not have it imposed on you. Maybe some like that bass roll off on the Keeley, I don’t. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Thank you for the very useful, no bull comparison.

I’m thoroughly obsessed with compressors. I had forgotten about the old tone press, so you’ve convinced to buy one. I’m a little less enchanted with Keeley now after some use. Also on my list are the various optical compressors for similar reasons you mentioned. Thanks for the insight!

Also, there are dip switches inside the SP that make it even more versatile. I'm not sure he even knew about it since it wasn't mentioned.

Not a fair comparison without adjusting the dip switches in the SP

Is that noise @00:45 coming from the Xotic?

they both add noise, but Keeley more

I'm still on the hunt for my perfect pedal compressor. I miss my old JHS modded dyna comp to be honest.

@@EricMakingWaves It may not be as much up my alley as before your change, but hey, I may learn something.
