Keely has just run a 54.61 in the 2024 London Diamond League 800m. That's the 6th fastest all time run, a new national record, faster than Athing Mu (who will not be at the Olympics), and almost one and a half seconds faster than Mary Moraa. Jemma Reekie also ran a personal best at 1:55.61, also fast than Mary Moraa has ever run. Paris Keely's greatest ever chance to win the gold at world level (and she is still only 22 lest we forget).

@@kenisme1000 Although Keely has a positive HTH record against Mary Moraa at the Major Champs . Unfortunately Morra defeated her at the recent WC . So Keely still does not have a Gold at Olympic nor World level. Mu has 2 with Mary M 1. She has yet to win Gold at the Olympics or World's. It helps her that Mu is not there. Morra is a faster finisher than Keely. She needs to go for home at least 300m out and increase the pressure to run the finish out of Morra.

@@keithbate9405 I agree with you keithbater However, my suspicion is that they might not run against each other. For example. one of them may elect to run the 400 metres, and the other the 400 hurdles. Who knows what will happen if they both of them compete in both events. It would be satisfying if they shared the honours, one of them winning the hurdles and the other the straight race. But if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Sydney winning both. God bless both of them. And anyway, a silver medal is not to be scorned.

Sometimes id like to see Keely attack the first 400 a bit more. She can easily go 1.54 in Paris. But She has so much pace at the end she could win the gold any way. Mary Moraa will be threat.

In 2024, Keely has been concentrating on speed over the last 150 metres, and she's won all her 800m races emphatically this year that way with the sole exception being the European Championship where she still got the job done, despite bring sick and clearly fading at the very end. If anybody goes out to do a 1:54 in Paris, then I don't think Keely will be the one leading that particular charge. When she beat Mary Moraa in Eugene this year, she did not follow Mary's very fast pace for the first 600 metres, but demolished her over the last 150 metres with sustained pace.

That seems to be the difference this season for Keeley 58.2 first lap. May have to do 58 or 57.50 in Olympics. However Moraa likes to lead then slows it down. Also you got Jemma Reekie and Phoebe Gill who can run 57.50 and just keep going for a very fast time?

@@bernardm2528 In Eugene, Keely did not follow Mary Moraa's very fast first 600 metres but, instead, concentrated on an even pace and then simply overtook and ran away from Mary in the last 150 metres. The real unknown for me is how Phoebe Gill will do. She too was really strong in the last 150 metres in the UK championships. We don't know how Phoebe will do over three rounds, assuming that she goes the distance, but given she's a fairly useful 1500 metre runner too, I think she'll have the strength, even at 17, to go well in the final. The first round will surely be a formality for her. However, of the two, my money would be on Keely. I another couple of years time, that could well be different.
@bernardm2528
@bernardm2528 3 ай бұрын
@@TheEulerID I agree, Keeley is capable of 1.55.5 in the final if she does that she wins. 1.54 unlikely in a final. Moraa will be better at the Olympics, but 1.56.03 is her fastest so maybe 1.55.8 possible. Phoebe Gill unknown I suspect if she runs 57.50 she can do 1.56.
@jackward9901
@jackward9901 3 ай бұрын
@bernardm2528 My gut instinct is that Moraa won't want Gill to make the final, because she will not allow her to slow the race - Gill has said she hates final 200m sprints, she likes to "wind it up" from 400m, and that will make it hard for Mary to slow the race. Even if they go through in 56s, Gill will keep pushing on, meaning Moraa will either have to lose position and drop back, or push on with Gill and go through 600m way too fast, leaving KH to do what she did in Eugene. *IF* Gill makes the final, I think KH will be a very strong favourite as the former will make things difficult for Moraa. If she doesn't, it's 50/50 imo.
@TheEulerID
@TheEulerID 3 ай бұрын
@@jackward9901 I'm inclined to agree. I don't think that Phoebe Gill can overcome her natural instincts in this matter, and her coach has publicly announced that she will "run with freedom", which I take as meaning that she will run instinctively, and not using some rigid tactic. As it is, Phoebe Gill has proven herself to be very strong at the end of a race. Maybe not the absolute fastest, but we have yet to see a recent race where she was under any pressure at all in the last 50 metres (and for her age, she's an extremely strong 1500 metre runner too). Maybe when faced with Moraa and Hodgkinson in the last 100 metres, that will prove too much, but it's going to be fascinating to find out. Phoebe Gill did, of course, run that first lap in the Irish Miler's 800m in a 56.56, and still completed that last lap, solo, in fractionally over 61 seconds. In the British Championships she also proved she could win with a negative split. Of course, I'm sort of assuming that Ms. Gill will make the final but, frankly, I don't see anything obvious that's going to stop her doing so, unless there's a sudden loss of form.

However, there's a few other nameless 800m greats that are not getting much attention and could really push for a top spot on the podium.

Really? Keely Hodkinson has run 2 seconds faster than Phoebe Gill this year. The latter has incredible potential, but to beat Keely Hodgkinson and, "easily", as you claim would be a huge step. In Eugene Keely distanced Jemma Reekie by more than Phoebe did in the British championships. It will be fascinating to see what does happen, but there is no way Keely will be easily beaten by anybody assuming that she remains well and is not sick, as she was for the European final.

@TheEulerID
@TheEulerID 3 ай бұрын
You really haven't been paying attention this year? Keely soundly beat Mary Moraa at the May meeting in Eugene by changing her tactics and not following the latter's tactics of a very fast first lap followed by a slowing down. Keely ran an even pace and then at 600 metres passed Mary on the bend and then simply ran away from her finishing finish in 1:55.78 compared to the latter's 1:56.71. Also, you are wrong in claiming Mary Moraa is younger than Keely. Mary was born on the 15th June 2000, whilst Keely was born on the 3rd March 2002. That makes Keely the younger by almost 2 years. True, Athing Mu is about three months younger than Keely, but then she won't be at the Olympics. Keely has, of course, beaten both of those athletes before, just not both of them at the same championships. None of this means that Keely will definitely beat Mary Mu at the Olympics, but if she is fit and gets her tactics right she has the ability to do so. She does, after all, have the faster personal best and has the World's best time this year. Finally, when it comes to youth, none of these runners has anything on Phoebe Gill, who will be at the Olympics and who, in May, ran a 1:57.86 aged just 17 years and 3 weeks. That broke the European U-18 record, which had stood for 45 years, by almost 2 seconds (the only faster U-18 time is by a Chinese athlete at a meeting notorious for doping - that athlete quickly disappeared off the scene). Since that 1:57, Phoebe has run a couple more 1:58 times, including winning the British Olympic trials, comfortably beating Jemma Reekie who was 4th at the Olympics (Keely ran the 400m as she was preselected). She is the young athlete to watch, and has run far faster at 17 than Hodgkinson or Mu (by over 3 seconds) and faster than Mary Moraa was aged 21.
