In this video we give you three tips on how to keep your chickens warm in the winter without electricity. We do not use heat lamps because of them being a fire hazard. Chickens are their own little heaters.

This will be our first winter with chickens. so far they seem great with the coop we built for them in a suburban area of North Texas. When I pick them up to see how they are doing in 30 degrees weather, they seem warm under their feathers. All of them are quite active and love the corn we give them when it gets below freezing. They are still laying eggs, which was a surprise to us during this time! We don't use heat lamps either for the reasons you all gave in the video, and advice we have heard from other sources that indicate chickens are fine down to zero degrees if they can be in a place that blocks the wind, but gets some ventilation.. Thanks for sharing your experiences with all of us that are pursuing this kind of life!

Sounds like you all are doing great. Always something to learn. Another way to help keep them warm if needed is to stack straw bales around the outside of their coop. But don't leave there too long if they free range....they will scratch them to pieces lol Thanks for watching and sharing. Stay warm!

I used the board insulation. It would have cost me an fortune to use that. But insulation is insulation!! Hope it’s better for them this year!

Good Morning! I just got chicks and I am trying to decide on the best predator proof coop to build. I appreciate videos such as this! Thank you so much! Nice coop. Elderberries are amazing. I grow tons of elderberries. I hope you have a blessed day! Wendy🙏🏻🇺🇸🌎

Thanks so much for watching. A solid sided coop for nighttime would be best. And if you are going to have them in a run, use hardware cloth vs. chicken wire. Coons can get right through chicken wire. Ask me how we know 🙁 Good luck with your chickens... eggs before you know it 😊

Tomorrow is our prep day, I got a couple bales of straw this afternoon. We still have chickens roosting in trees! 🤦🏼‍♀️ We are bedding down the rabbits also, as well as the Mayor, our boss dog. You reminded me I have a water heater somewhere. I need to find that too! Ya'll stay safe and have a Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the video. I live in San Diego so it goes down to 40s at its lowest. Usually in the 50s. Question I have is do u remove the insulation during the summer or keep it on all yr round. I want my chickens to be comfortable given it's my 1st time raising chickens in the city. 😊 thanks for the help.

Thanks for watching. Your chickens will be fine in 40's ....they produce their own heat. And yes, we just leave in all year long.

I'm looking at getting some chickens for the first time, and I've never had any farm animals. We just moved from the city to a farm last year. I live near Toronto, Canada, and our winters can get down to -30 degrees F. Would this still work for me? Or is that too cold? Thanks!

Congrats on your move. I think you will love having chickens. Another thing you can do is Straw Bale 'Insulation' - Probably the easiest way to keep your coop warm this winter is to stack bales of straw along the inside walls. Plus, find some KZbin channels that live in Canada. I know this channel is youtube.com/@countrysideacreshomestead2008
