Oracle never accused IBM of being greedy over this. They simply believe RHEL should remain open. So do I. It was IBM who made it about money by saying that they must pay the developers despite the fact that prior to IBM acquiring RHEL the developers were paid and RHEL was open. So the whole greed and money thing lies with IBM.

Addressing you guys' comments: I am fully aware that the work both companies put into kernel contributions/extended support surpasses expectations, I'm just pointing the hypocrisy from Oracle (for doing the same thing the RHEL team did) and Red Hat (for violating GPLv2), their level of engagement with Linux is not an excuse. If their goal is to pay the software engineers fairly, they shouldn't have went for Linux in the first place, don't get me wrong tho, a worker deserves his salary, but that's why we have the *Proprietary/closed source models*, and why devs earn as much as they do on FAANG(-like) companies. Red Hat can charge as much as they see fit for the extended support, but they're legally obliged by the GPL to release the source code, free of any restrictions. The reason Linux set itself apart was it's uncompromissing goal of offering true freedom in the software world. Back then, when tech companies started to wrestle in court and media to get the most market share, Linux guaranteed the future of the IT world as it exists today. In summary: Anyone can contribute to Linux (and any FOSS project on that matter), just don't expect anything back. If that's your goal, it's better to spend your time and resources elsewhere, it'll be more profitable. Contributing was never a precedent or an entitlement to financial compensation. Also, sorry for my bad English, not my first language. Also, also, I appreciate being able to enjoy the fruits of my labour, this is why my next projects will be closed source/monetized, I'm not an idealist, nor a software freedom evangelist, I'm just stating the situation and context surrounding the drama.

When Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, they rapidly closed OpenSolaris. Fortunately, the free and open source community saw the writing on the wall and quickly forked the code. Also, all the Sun top PhD / Engineers and other top-talent who built ZFS, Dtrace, etc., etc., etc. jumped ship. So far Oracle is keeping their Linux distribution open source. But perhaps that's because nobody is using it to the same level as RHEL. Oracle is just kicking their competitor while he's down.

The fact this is so savage and still lands - while being written by Oracle sums the cituation perfectly. If Oracle can successfully dunk on you, maybe just resign as a CEO. IBM bought something that only has value because it can’t, for large parts if it, be monetised, for price of it’s true use value. It’s like trying to make money selling USB-spec. Hardware manufacturers would either find a new open standard, or develop their own proprietary one. USB is worthless without the U. RHEL is worthless without the L

You may be too young to remember, but IBM have done this before: the PS/2 (Personal System/2, not PlayStation 2!) and MCA leap to mind. In short, having created the 5150 PC as an open standard (only because they were late to the party) and thinking - wrongly - that nobody would be able to legally clone the BIOS (the only proprietary part in the computer), they created the PS/2, with the Micro Channel Architecture bus standard, which companies had to licence to use in their own machines, or even create peripherals for. Yes, it failed miserably. Sadly the same cluelessness also brought down OS/2, which people actually liked.

GPT-4: explanation without any context is hilarious Here, a "lawnmower" is a device used to trim or cut down grass to an even height, maintaining neatness and order. Let's analyze a couple of possible metaphorical interpretations depending on context: If the context is about efficiency, the phrase may imply the man is very efficient and capable of getting tasks done quickly and neatly, just like a lawnmower rapidly trims grass. If the context is about causing drastic change, it may suggest that, like a lawnmower that brings a drastic change to the condition of a lawn, the man is capable of causing significant transformations, or "mowing down" obstacles in his path. If the context is about maintaining order, the phrase might mean that just as a lawnmower maintains the order of a lawn by keeping the grass uniform and neat, the man ensures everything in a situation or environment is orderly and well-regulated. Remember, the interpretation can vary depending on the context in which the phrase is used.

2:30 pm I think that was a good statement, even if it seems superficial if looked at without a specific scrutiny. There is a pattern to these people's reviews and it usually goes like this: * I like you, you've done things that please me and/or my friends and/or you've followed some kind of agenda that pleases me -> You're very interested, you do things because you care and that's it * I don't like you for whatever reason, or you're irrelevant to me -> This is a company, of course it just wants to make a profit, isn't it obvious? There is an evil plan behind this company's actions because companies are evil, BOOOOOO! When you stop seeing the world as a big platform where people are fighting and there are these abstract entities that people invoke to make their opponents look like monsters, like "profit" or "being a company", and you start seeing that there are human beings there even if they are shitty human beings, things just seem less hysterical.

The way you pronounce RHEL as ruHELL with stress on the latter, please allow me to use that myself from now on 🙂 Also, why did I not come up with that backronym for Oracle at 14:12 (not quoting here, watch the video, you want ThePrimes reaction)

Huh. Does this mean RHEL becomes anti competitive, since they prevent oracle to compete? Correct me if I'm wrong

Other than most other very valid comments, I think Oracle also basically just burnt itself too much on this before xD.

Ellison broke down in tears after sailing "through the eye of a hurricane" to win the tragic Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race on Tuesday (Dec 1998). At least three sailors died and three others were missing. "We just want to pay tribute to families who lost sailors who were in this race and our prayers go out to the search crews and the people who are still in the water," Ellison said when his US yacht, the Sayonara, was officially declared the winner. "We hope they all can be found."

Being compatible in oracle linux sense goes both ways, they can easily get people from RHEL but RHEL can also easily get their clients so its win some lose some

Oracle just prices under RHEL is all. They take the RHEL source and release it as their own, which is in their rights under the GPL but it must be said it saves them a lot on development costs. The fact that people want to go with RHEL anyway is pretty funny.

But how can IBM withold a products source code if the product is GPLv2??? That is licence infringement - regardless how they can or cannot pay engineers... It is as if they would be licencing some tech for a fee and start saying "oh we cannot pay you licences for arm ISA but we will keep using them - sorry we need to pay engineers..." What is difference?
@SharpBritannia

They can withold source from those who don't get binaries id est non-customers They are also well within their right to choose who their customers are therefore punishing anyone who dares redistributing the source they've got. It's immoral but perfectly legal. Just goes to show how strong copyleft is just a fucking myth
