I did it!!! Thank you for your demo: One strand 3-4” off ground outside the rabbit fence. And then one strand 2” above rabbit fence. I added some strands in areas I thought may be more vulnerable to a “jump over”. So far all my tomatoes are safe and are actually starting to ripen. I had used lots of hot pepper (ghost pepper) spray but always had to keep applying it every couple of days. The electric fence has finally given my tomatoes a chance and peace of mind for me.

All these years of gardening...Thank you so much. The squirrels are cute to look at, all fluffy and all, but when you are trying to grow a serious, family-sustaining garden and they keep messing with your food, it is time to find a way to keep them away. I have tried SO many different ways - even sweet gum balls (from our tree), and the stinkers still found a way to gobble PART of all of my tomatoes, EAT my germinating plant's tender shoots, and dig up the roots of many veggies, causing my garden to fail. And then when I would chase them away, they had the audacity to come back to my window and squawk at me. :/ All these years of toiling and wasting... Thank you for this simple, little "ouching", but not "damaging" idea to rescue my garden from these pain in the neck, albeit cute, pests. :) Blessings on you AND your garden, and stay safe during all of this Covid-19 stuff!

Nothing like jersey Corn....worth every dime to protect it. I use an electric fence for deer and groundhog.....and feed the birds and squirrels plenty of peanuts and bird seed so they tend to be fat and happy, and mostly out of my garden. Note that one must keep grass trimmed around the fence or the wet grass will short and weaken the charge on the fence.

Quick question: The area by the wooden fence where the squirrels can jump onto the fence... if a squirrel did jump from the wooden fence to the top area of the electric fence you wired, how would it complete the ground and get the shock? The squirrel would never actually touch the ground, thus not completing the circuit. Just trying to figure this all out, as I will be building this set up in the coming weeks. Thanks

+AnYESJOY anything that burrows underneath is a whole 'nother ordeal. best bet would be to deter then from burrowing. I.e. Spray/disperse an agent in front of fence to prevent animals from starting to dig.

From my experience with this the squirrels never figured out how to bypass the system. They just see what’s really there and pause at the electric fence and if they keep going they get zapped. So it kind of trains them to stay away.

How high should the barrier fence be?

I'm setting mine up - -thanks for the video. Are you using the barrier fence as the ground (earth)? So near your wooden fence, the squirrel doesn't need to be on the ground to close the circuit and get shocked? Instead the squirrel needs to be touching the electrified wire AND the barrier fence? Thanks in advance for explaining.

You can use the barrier fence as part of the ground system. As long as there is exposed metal in direct contact with the dirt I think it will work. It’s been a while since I did this video but I think I had a ground stake somewhere on the system that went about 15 inches into the ground.

Best video on KZbin re keeping rabbits out of the garden, in my opinion. Just thinking of how to combine it with a rabbit fence. Currently rabbits are jumping right through the electric fence. I figure that using a 3' barrier fence should keep both squirrels and rabbits out. Could string another electrified wire near the top of the barrier fence in case the smarter "Jersey squirrels" jump on the fence above the lower electrified wire. Should work for skunks too. The wisdom re rabbit fencing appears to be to either bury a foot of fencing or lay it on the ground and staple it down with ground staples. But the same principle of barrier fence plus electric fence should still work. The spacing between electric fence and barrier fence is probably helpful, but I"m wondering whether just putting a barrier fence inside an electric fence on the other side of the poles might just work too.

+Inge Anderson I'd say give it a shot with your ideas. Burying the barrier fence about a foot deep sounds like it could effectively keep out the gophers from digging underneath.

Your bottom electric is less then a foot high . Will work for a couple of weeks. Squirrels will learn to jump before the electric onto the guard fence. Guard fence is a great ladder . Would have to have electric wire many feet high { not just on the top and bottom }.

You are correct the bottom electric fence is less than a foot high. That's where the rabbit fencing comes in the play. I obtained a full seasons' worth of corn during a drought year with squirrels hungrier than no tomorrow and not one got into the corn patch. The squirrels don't jump over the two lines onto the electric fence.

Again, squirrels here just jump onto the fence. and climb over. They don't walk up to the fence grab it and make the ground to fence contact. If you come up to electric fence and jump onto it, you won't get shocked.

I just bought Red Snap'r but AC powered. I have to deal with much bigger intruders, deer that is. First, I was thinking about buying the solar one, I just don't know how long a battery can last. Anyway, my wife wants me to return it, saying someone gets killed.

+skamravec That's fantastic. Yes, deer are a whole other ballgame. Since the unit I have is solar powered, as long as it get about 6 hours of direct sunlight each day, the battery will last a long time, since it's getting recharged from the solar panel. I am not familiar with the strength of the AC powered models, but I would refer to the owners manual that came with it to find specific information to address your wife's concerns.

This is a good video and I think it's very well designed. However, I'm not sure I'd agree with you that it is the best way to keep squirrels out of your garden, though it might be the most humane. A less humane way but 100% effective is to trap all the squirrels that claim your garden as part of their territory and then get rid of them. You might have anywhere between 3 to10 squirrels and it takes about 3 weeks to get rid of all of them. But once you do, you won't see another one for the rest of the season and sometimes for even the next season as well. Where I live, squirrels become active in January. Using 4 simple, small $25 traps, they are all eliminated by mid February. Then all I have to worry about are skunks and raccoons. They're not territorial like squirrels, so for skunks and raccoons, an electrical fence like this one is probably the way to go.

Don't you need to keep cutting grass and foilage back from the fence? Also, I have ducks...would they be hurt by touching it? We used this kind of fencing for raising pigs...they could smell the electricity.

+sarahmorrill All of the wires are charged. The squirrel makes the ground happen when it touches the wire, thus completing the circuit back to the controller. And zap!

I guess my question wasn't clear. Let me try again. You have two wires. Is one wire connected to the positive terminal and the other connected to the negative terminal? With that configuration, the squirrel would have to touch both wires to complete the circuit. Or do you have both wires connected to the positive terminal and the the actual ground connected to the negative terminal by means of driving a stake or two through the ground? That way, the squirrel completes the circuit but touching his hands to a either wire and his feet to the ground.

Both hot wires are connected to the positive terminal and the actual ground goes to the "negative "side on the controller which is connected to a grounding rod pounded into the earth. That way the squirrel does complete the circuit through the earth and to get zapped.

I don't knowif you've found a solution yet, but for digging critters you can bury hardware cloth around the perimeter. Ten inches down and pull it out at a small angle, and that should be enough to deter them.

I hear you can help deter them by providing water and nuts/seeds in a nearby location to satisfy them from wanting calories and water from your garden. Others say you can plant different types of spices like mint, mustard, and marigold around your garden, and use coffee grounds, since squirrels have such good senses of smell.

Currently I see this as a learning curve issue. First encounter, the varmint is shocked at the obstacle, but it returns and is revolted at it's failure. He's askin' himself: "Watt? Watt?" He knows the potential of the reward, but his negative experience is causing him to quote George Takei: "Ohm my." He takes positive steps to overcome the internal resistance that is impeding his progress, but the electricity makes him hotter and hotter. Were I him, I would try to tunnel to see if he can make a short cut through the ground.

Currently this is the best remedy that I have found. The detractors regarding jumping and short fence, that can be alleviated easily. Anything that interacts like this has to be monitored. Those who want to live trap, you're just providing a vacation spot with no bill, and their cute young ones will be back to chew your attic up. I would put the cat out there, an effective deterrent, but there seems to be a local Chupacabra out there trying to kill cats. I saw a fox running around a few years ago, but I think the local hillbilly's killed it. The squirrel population has skyrocketed and there are squirrel foxholes all over my yard eating my first time tulip bulbs. It looks like an intense meteor strike.

Actually it is a very good idea and it works 100% perfect. Only thing you've always test the wire, make sure there is no short connection and voltage is right. I always use chicken wire. What happens, their main target is climb the second fence(non electrical). So they come closer and get shock. Also I found that they try to dig the ground under electrical fence, but not successful. If it is solar powered the squirrels will figure out only to invade you on cloudy days when it shuts down. They are very smart just like rats with fluffy tails. Arrrg your camera man geeeez did not do you justice. I used an electric fence for this purpose and found a squirrel hanging dead by his teeth. It will definitely kill a squirrel. Once I saw that I just gave up and trashed everything.
