Pay off whatever you are driving now and don't upgrade until you can afford to pay cash for the next one. The big problem is that people don't understand how interest works, and it's by design. Anyone that took out a 30 year mortgage in the last couple years can plug their numbers into any online calculator and see they are going to be paying over double what the house "sold" for. Cars aren't much better.

There's only one number you need to know, and that's your bank account balance. Buy whatever car you can afford without getting into debt. If you have $100k to burn, good for you. Otherwise a 2005 Civic will get you to your destination just as fast as a brand new Range Rover. And it's probably more reliable.
@nickcruz8748Күн бұрын
Very well said. Unfortunately, many people buy a vehicle based on what they feel it will do for their mood, status sex appeal, or success, and not realizing that most of the time, the answer is "nothing."

@Not_CielКүн бұрын
They may both get me to the same place in the same amount of time but the 2005 Civic probably won't have good heating/ac while the brand new Range Rover will keep me warm and toasty during that 30 minute drive in the winter. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm willing to pay a little extra to have the comfort of actually driving instead of pay for the car in cash and then freeze my ass off every day because my 20 year old car's heat went out and it's snowing outside. I'd say a 2015 civic would be a better option.

I had to watch the video twice because the first time, my brain kept saying you are double dipping for the financing and i couldn't focus on anything else. I'm glad you explained that later. Yes that new vehicle will depreciate more than a used one, but you left out that the new car comes with a full warranty. Its good from a cost standpoint, but its great from a peace of mind standpoint. I have a new car and if anything goes wrong with it, i dont have to pay to get it repaired. Also, new car has maybe a hundred miles on it. Your 3 year old car could have 50k, or more. If im looking at a vehicle i will keep for 10 years, id rather start with 100 miles than 50k or even 30k. Peace of mind again. Video was great. I just wanted to add the warranty component.

I don’t like counting depreciation in the “cost” whatsoever. It feels disingenuous. When I buy a car, I buy it and plan to ride it until the wheels fall off. When you have the mindset of buying a car and using it until it’s worth more for parts that for driving, depreciation absolutely shouldn’t be a factor
@PattyCakeJakeКүн бұрын
Agreed. Depreciation is a bigger issue if you swap cars every 2-3 years and/or finance. If you’re paying cash and driving it forever, depreciation isn’t a huge factor.
@andrewmcalister3462Күн бұрын
I get that - if you paid cash in full rather than financing, depreciation is kinda double counting. On the other hand, if you set aside and save each year an amount equivalent to the depreciation, then you should have enough cash saved to buy a replacement vehicle when the wheels do fall off.

Humphrey - I'm enjoying your videos. I'd like a video or series of videos in which you explore combining the heuristics you detail. As an example, you've detailed a few car rules: i) 35% gross income rule ii) 20-4-10 rule But for me, these two rules don't align well at all. I have my vehicle narrowed down to one choice: Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition. It fits (pretty much exactly) in the 35% gross income rule, but for the 4 & 10 parts of "20-4-10" to work, I'd have to go WAY over 20% down. Couple that with other rules such as your 40% gross debt rules. How does being well under in that range affect the 20-4-10 rule, for instance.

Voluntary Repo doesn't mean you get out of the loan. The bank (not the dealership) will auction your vehicle off and you still owe the difference between the financed amount and the auction amount. The auction amount will be less than what you owe, and you'll tank your credit score. Giving it back doesn't get you further ahead than selling it, but selling it saves your credit score
