We are like laboring beasts of burden in the sense that we are motivated either by the carrot of pleasure dangling on the stick which moves stubborn donkeys or by the cattle prod of pain from behind which moves us dumb oxes. Can we get freed from the carrot on the stick and the cattle prod? Pleasure and pain motivate the will to become willful to get what we want and to avoid what we are averse to. Is there another motivation for the soul? Can we become willing like the foal which carried Christ into the City of Peace? Can we go from a willful or rich in spirit disposition to a willing or poor in spirit disposition? A willful or rich in spirit disposition responds to carrots and cattle prods. A soul with such a spirit goes where pleasure pulls and pain pushes. A willing or poor in spirit disposition responds to faith and trust. A soul with such a spirit goes where the Good Shepherd leads. The soul hears and recognizes his voice because they share something in common and relate. They are meek and gentle of heart. The burdened and heavy laden soul seeks rest in him in quiet contemplation.
