@@davidrosensin7985 ok so there was a mod that was made to add goblins race into this game that was on the workshop. Now I don't know all the exact details but the modder that was developing it died of a disease, cancer I think, and as a tribute, the KewperRL dev took the mod, finished it off, released it as official free content and attributed that modder for his support of the game. I think it was in update 35 or 34, can't remember which but I still think it was a nice little memento they did. You can unlock it immediately via the menu or just by progressing normally through the game

Skeleton archers riding skeleton wolves sounds like a thing. The wolves can move to stay at range so the archers can shoot, and if someone gets close enough to mess with the archer the wolf can start wrecking them.

Making a phylactery would turn you into a lich, a very powerful undead spell-caster. Vecna from DND is one of the most powerful characters in the setting. I might want to play this one, thanks for the vid!

@@rareraven Oh right, I didn't recognize the name in English. Herod was one of the Roman puppet kings they chose from the native populations in conquered lands. Dude married into the Hashmonaim to give himself legitimacy and then killed all of them to get rid of potential threats to his throne. The man was fucked up.

I havent checked yet, but if you ever want to play a bunch of moonshiners being protected by automatic gatling guns capable of mowing down dragons then Gnomes are the OPG's Over Powered Gods. Go for iron working then advanced automaton in that order for research, Iron working gives Iron golems which are walking tanks and with the advanced you can get the golems that have the arrow heads. Iron level gives +15 dmg per head so slap 3 on 1 body and you get +45 per shot which is absolutely nuts on dmg. very few enemys can even face this barrage and when you get adamantium thats a full +20 per head. 60 dmg a shot kills everything except death as far as I encountered.

All of these games are a constant reminder that dwarf fortress and cataclysm have a very prohibitive command scheme

There's a learning curve, but once you've learned one roguelike, you'll be pretty familiar with the conventions of most roguelikes. I consider CDDA's biggest stumbling block to be the minutae, while DF's is the sheer complexity. Dungeon Keeper is charmingly simple by comparison - no keybinds needed, you can get to everything using the visible mouse menus. Hopefully the (upcoming*(tm)**) steam release of Dwarf Fortress will be more accessible. The devlogs look promising so far.

@@r3dp9 what I'm talking about is not the learning curve, I'm talking about something more fundamental to even start playing, like moving around, looting and managing loot ecc the most basic commands. I'm going to go on a rant: the only thing that most roguelike have in common is the esc, enter and arrow keys, the problem with these games is not their difficulty and or complexity, most people will love that, heck nowadays it's not even the graphics as there's tons of good tile sets, their problem is the unnecessary over complicated and convoluted commands to even start to play, if they streamlined that they would be way way more popular and supported, I legit spent 4 hours in cataclysm alone stuck in the initial building because I had to keep reviewing the command necessary to open a specific menu to move my items around and then test every key to guess what they did normally and in other specific menus, heck some keys have their function almost hidden somewhere and, the "backtab", one of the single most important keys to start properly a cataclysm play, is not even a thing on the keyboard most of the times, I love these kind of games and would play them even with my limited time but that doesn't change their shitty command scheme that will turn off the majority of interested people, making them only dream to play it when watching a video om yt of someone else playing

@@ennou1236 I could absolutely be misremembering because it's been quite a while since I last played it but doesn't CDDA have a quick menu popup that has nearly all the functions of the game inside of it? From what I recall the only things you can't access through that interface are some of the really specific functions that new players are basically guaranteed not to need to worry about until they're more experienced and much further into the game. Dwarf Fortress' input and command system is one that I have personally struggled with in the past so I agree it could use some reworking and streamlining, but I also really doubt that it will end up being the most significant obstacle to most players who are just starting out learning the game when there's way stranger and more confusing issues involved in playing, like using external software just to manage dwarf jobs and the fact that even on a lot of mid-to-high-end modern hardware the game is going to run poorly once they begin to make significant progress towards building up their fortress due to being stuck in one CPU thread in a world that has moved towards multi-core architectures. I think it's also important to consider that these sorts of games are generally so complex and have so many mechanics to interface with that, while I'm not saying it's impossible, it could get really difficult to simplify the command schemes without sacrificing player freedom and granularity of control.

Yes. It's not short on content and being a roguelike failing and restarting is constant but there is a satisfaction in seeing your base ideas evolve over time and all that. I recommend it

It's "EA" in the sense that it will always be receiving updates, just like Dwarf Fortress and the like will always be receiving updates. Roguelikes have strange development cycles. It's very rare for them to ever be 'done'. They always have exploits, and even if they get finished they will still get modded, forked, get spiritual successors, etc.

Yep. Splats has his strengths, but noticing warnings/alerts is not one of them. Once or twice he's missed large-font text in the middle of the screen, but he'll spot three half-shaded pixels to find a secret. He's likely the kind of person where if he's driving and you ask how fast he's going, he'll look at the passing scenery to judge speed rather than read the speedometer.

To be fair, those zombie deaths were due to passive-aggressive animals or walking into the sunlight. Full scale raids from other factions always come with a popup that pauses the game until you click on it. That said, the lack of good notifications is the #1 cause of deaths in KeeperRL. I've lost countless slaves and minions because the "killed by a kraken" notification was hidden amongst all the "minion #48 has gained it's #5th level in melee / crafter #3 has made club #201" notifications.

12:20 Necromancer is both the quantity faction and the quality faction, and produces the most OP fortresses possible. It takes a LOT of setup though - you need at least one corpse to create each zombie, and you'll literally need hundreds of corpses and limbs to make a SINGLE zombie king. The downside of undead is that all of their injuries are permanent. If they aren't outright invincible, they WILL die to attrition eventually (but any limbs they lose can be picked up and reused on a new unit!) As far as I know, the only way to beat the strongest Necromancer retired forts is to abuse large quantities of consumable potions. 27:00 Like most roguelikes, the game is very moddable and the code is very accessible and transparent. The most recent update lets modders add their own damage types and stats, so expect the already interesting modded factions to get more interesting over time.

Actually picked this ga,e up a couple months ago, I've been pretty disappointed. Not sure why people compare it to Dungeon Keeper, but there's no point In building traps (have yet to play gnomes). By the time you've gained enough xp to unlock decent units to defend, you can push through and destroy all the factions. The Z levels really only serve the purpose of mining out more resources, because like with the traps, by the time you're collecting on Z level you already have a base. The change in gameplay from independent working units given commands to turn based combat really only works to hinder yourself or enemies with simple chokepoints. Just feels like the game doesn't have a direction in what it really is, like yeah I can kill everything, but then it's over or play endless waves. Spent most time on necromancer simply trying the building undead combinations with the flesh crafting. And if you reach the final enemy/faction, you won't lose so long as you don't send your keeper into the front lines. It's too bad though because the game has potential, but is this weird combination of oversimplified gameplay and brick-wall progression that doesn't mesh well.
