Such cool little creatures. Good to learn a little bit about how to keep then and their needs.

Thank you! I love these little guys. Hopefully, I'll be able to add a few new ones this summer, but they're hard to get these days!

Good video. Just want to let you know that I've kept axolotls outside in my pond for the last 5years. No heater, just a pond pump and filter and they are very fit fat and healthy. In my experience it's the heat that kills them but they can deal with the cold very well.

Glad to hear your lot are doing well!! Its a real pity the can't tolerate higher temperatures as I think they would be a really great pet for so many people, but running chillers with electricity prices as they are just isn't feasable for most people, back when I had these guys in tanks, even in the coldest room in the house, I had to run fans to keep things in check on really hot days, there's been no issues with temps at all!!! 🎉🎉🎉

You'll never see a short lived unhealthy Axolotl kept in a pond outside in Irish/British climate. When the winter comes and forms a layer of ice I've found it stimulates them to breed after the thaw. Axolotl experience iced over waters in their native central Mexican Highland range.

I couldn't see any historical weather data for their native range that was as cols as Irelands winter for long periods like we can get, so I opted for a few small heaters in my pond just to be sure! They do great in ponds, I think they're overlooked for them for sure, because people usually want to keep many different types of inhabitants in it, but a species only axolotl pond is great fun!

The water temperature in Lake Xochimilco rarely rises above 20 °C (68 °F), though it may fall to 6 or 7 °C (45 °F) in the winter, and lower. Lake Xochimilco is 2,400 m elevation, & it's known to snow at 2,200 m > The farmers there stop with frost sensitive crops in October there.
