This was great, I've been looking for "quail babies running" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (search on google ) ? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail without the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.

Cheers for this, I've been looking for "keeping coturnix quail for eggs" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (do a search on google ) ? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail minus the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my neighbour got great results with it.

Very informative video about keeping quails. Thanks for sharing!

Lovely to see someone keeping quail well instead of in a tiny cage. I started raising them organically in 2000 and for a very important reason, in that their eggs have therapeutic qualities and can cure a whole raft of medical conditions and in particular respiratory ones and those centred on allergies. This was known for centuries but only recently identified as the quality of the human trypsin inhibitor in the egg white. If you are having problems with them jumping and being startled then it is possible you need to up their methionine levels by sourcing their protein more from invertebrates and making their diet less grain/legume based. However, in the films I have seen on your quail chicks, they look pretty laid back! In the wild though, when they are young, they are then fed almost exclusively on an insectivorous diet. It's true it is hard going providing it all and particularly later in getting them to lay eggs if you want them to lay on a daily basis but you will get quail that show less nervous behaviour and you will start to see their personalities developing. It took me several years to get coturnix to raise their own chicks but starting with a bantam works wonders. The chicks are quick to learn and even though precocial will attach themselves to the hen and learn to forage and how to be a parent! It's 'paleo' nutrition and a planted largish environment that brings out their latent natural behaviour. I've even been able to free-range them on occasions. Predators are a real pain, rats and cats I found were the worse here. Anyway hope this is of use and really good luck! Subbed, liked, followed on Twitter, oh and Happy New Year, Sue

My dad works at a hatchery and with quail he sprays them with mouth wash and water 50/50 this kills all bacteria and improves your hatch rate by around 15%
@AngelasKitchenGarden7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. My hatch rate last year was around 80% and that is after they were posted to me as I bought them from ebay!! I am going to try and hatch my own eggs this year so will look into this if I have issues with them.

I purchased a rabbit cage that is 30 in width and 15 in height. Just a starting cage. It has a bottom that has very small square holes for quail. How many can I keep in this cage. And do you think it's OK.

Awww, those little chicks at the end are so cute, another brill video full of great info as I didn't know anything about these birds before watching, wondering if they are susceptible to bird flu like hens as I'm not sure if all birds can catch it...looking forward to seeing some chicks hatching if you manage to capture it...no worries if you don't :) Ann
@AngelasKitchenGarden7 жыл бұрын
It's only me your right about the bird flue they have to be covered at the moment. I have a big tarp over the top of their run. The chicks really are sweet when they hatch and look like fluffy bumblebees and they are so small. I will definitely post videos when I hatch them out.

Thank you for your video it was very informative. I'm interested in getting quail for meat, but I was also interested to know about their egg laying. Are they like chickens in that you don't need a male for them to lay eggs, unless you want to breed them, or do they differ in that they need the male regardless? It's probably a silly question but I'm in the learning phase before I get them. In Tasmania there doesn't seem to be a lot of growers certainly not near me anyway. Cheers!
@JOE-on4pi5 жыл бұрын
You do not need roosters to have eggs, you only need a rooster if you are going to hatch chicks.

@dobe7626 жыл бұрын
who's organic turkey growers do you use? i'm struggling to find organic 18-19% ration, thanks.
@Pavlovafowl6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, Usually Marriage's are the biggest operation for organic poultry food. I asked them some years back about a specific organic quail food, as they usually need over 21% protein but they could only produce it in enormous quantities as a special issue. I think that's probably because there is no market for it at the moment as the EEC has no organic certification for quail...still...and so no farmer is going to be able to sell organic quail with any legal status. Turkey grower would be high in protein though and as Angela is getting an egg a day it must be!! I'm still making my own food, sprout triticale and an invertebrate rich diet but mine only lay in clutches and in the breeding season when I can get sufficient creepy crawlies from our compost heap. However I have branched out into home-raised organically fed meal worms, so we shall see. All the very best from Normandie, Sue
@dobe7626 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sue, I thought I'd checked them out and it was only GM Free, but I may have missed it! I've been seriously considering some quail, and just needing to make sure all is in place before making the move. I can get organic layers ok. You are brave on the meal worm front, not sure I have time for more work, I've also tried sprouted grains 3x now and killed birds on 3x occasions, not sure if its because they gorge on it or if they are eating older stale stuff that seems to gather up, but they die on me so I'm really put off from trying again. And then there's housing!!!! enough to keep us chatting the rest of the week. I've read your pages several times and the greenhouse works well for you, I'm trying to come up with a plan...;-)
@Pavlovafowl6 жыл бұрын
I checked on their site because it is a long time since I contacted them and it says they produce turkey feed in conventional, Non-GMO and organic but I'd ring them and find out because their site doesn't seem that user-friendly. I can't understand why birds would die from sprouted grain, was this local organic and what sort of grain was it? The only thing I can think of is that it could have gone mouldy or been somehow contaminated but I don't think they would eat it then. That is so sad, I've been sprouting and feeding organic triticale for years to the quail, chickens and pigeons and never had a problem, I'll check out any research available and see if I can find anything and PM you. Yes the greenhouse works really well for the quail, in particular the glass window extension, I'm trying to create a mini forest garden for them! However this is a nice set up that Angela has here with using them on her allotment, so they get good forage and in particular invertebrates. I know people move them about on raised beds, too just covering it over with game netting, you just have to watch out for stray cats! All the very best, Sue
@dobe7626 жыл бұрын
Yes I see its there, but showing very little info on it, however it is ''Seasonal Product Only'' so probably not going to work out. Grain used was organic wheat and then organic oats grown local (soil assoc.) They are still eating it but in the dry state. Last bird to die seemed to have a sour crop, she didn't last only the few hours from letting them out in the morning. Your triticale is a new one to me! I just love those old grains that are more primitive and full of good stuff.

did any of your quail actually ever break their neck by flying into the roof?
@ethansexotics6164 жыл бұрын
Mine never do. They are pretty tame and come up to me when I walk up to their hutch. However I would imagine that there is a good possibility they they could hurt themselves so I would just not slam the door and make sure the ceiling isn't too hard. You can add foam pads by nailing them in.

The part about the birds not being a nuisance for neighbors is untrue. They may not be as noisy as a rooster, but I am on this site because my neighbor has a Japanese quail and it is currently mating season (spring). This bird calls intermittently throughout the day and night, so much that my husband and I have started sleeping in a different part of the house and wearing ear plugs to no avail. The mating call or this one bird has interrupted my sleep and has begun to influence my health. So it is certainly a nuisance to neighbors. I hate this bird.
@AngelasKitchenGarden4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that. Mine were never very noisy and the neighbours never said anything about the noise and they didnt bother us during the night with noise. I wonder what breed of quail they had.
@honeybee3317 Жыл бұрын
Coternix males kept with females are rarely heard. Males alone should be kept in bachelor groups away from females. It's better to keep them with females.
