One other thing I would add to the go bag is a manual RO water maker. They don't make a great quantity of potable water but a gallon or three of drinking water / day could be a life saver if you were in the ocean for any length of time. In the navy you don't get a drink of water for the first 24 hr. so any time I passed a water fountain, I would take a few sips just so I had a drink shortly before abandoning ship, just in case. If there are burn victims aboard they will require extra water. Fire is your worst enemy, but allow for it.

I like your videos mate, but some feedback on your tethers and jacklines (straight from the latest racing rules in Australia mostly): You should have two tethers - a longer one no more than 1.5m and a shorter one no more than 1m or less is better. Tether clips, or carabiners, must be dual action minimum and rated at 27kN minimum. The ones you have would be nowhere near strong enough, and are only single locking. They can come undone if caught on something, or twisted sideways against an eye bolt or jack line. Research the recent deaths from crew using flat metal clips from the major makers. Your jacklines are too far outboard, and/or your tethers are too long. The easiest way to think of this is your safety must not depend at all on your lifelines around the boat, in fact, you should not be able to reach them with your body at all. I would say the jacklines pictured would not be strong enough if really tested in a storm. I highly doubt the safety of the harness included in that cheap PFD / lifejacket. These must be rated and have that rating printed on the certification. A poorly designed harness will injure you more than the actual hazard itself, this is no place to save money. Mine cost $500 each and are extremely good quality (Spinlock Deckvest 5D pro-sensor)

Great orientation, but, PFD life jacket without a hood and crotch straps is very suboptimal. Maybe the ones here have them, but did not mention. Also why attach the jackline to the bimini stanchion? Put it on the much stronger aft cleat.

Thanks very much Martin for your feedback. I agree that a crotch strap on the inflatable life jacket is considerably safer. The ones shown are an older model that did not offer that. We actually just recently ordered new ones, the Crewsaver Crewfit 40 Pro, which has an optional crotch strap. On the jacklines, it's hard to see in the video but they are tied to the stern pushpit not the Bimini tubing. You make a good point though that the aft cleat would be even better. Fair winds!

Me Again, sorry for this. The Volvo Ocean Race just lost a very experienced sailor . Like you said " STAY ON BOARD !! ". Captain Rick Moore said on his YTube site { BEFORE } the incident ; " man overboard ? Sailors call that ' lost at sea '. Again, like you say , Stay On The F---en Boat !!

Some People have A Safty thing,I'm not Sure how It work's,But If u Let go Of the Steering Weel Because some big Wave Or Etc,Knock'ed you Overboard,Then the boat will just Keep Circle'ing.Give's you A chance to Grab Onto the Boat When It Come's Around.I Think They Have to rig It Like That,not Sure,but you Probbly Know how they do That.??

FiddleStick, I have not heard of such a device. But regardless I think it would be very difficult to get onboard a boat by yourself, while it is moving, even if it is doing a circle. Best to try as hard as you can, and take every safety precaution, to stay onboard!
