“The car that made these two equal length tire marks had positraction. can’t make those marks without positraction, which was not available on the ‘64 Buick Skylark. “ Marisa Tomei earned that Oscar. Also, once you notice that Joe Pesci is wearing visible face tape in this movie … you can’t unsee it.

Fabulous. My personal top 5 winners from the 90s: Holly Hunter, Marisa Tomei, Jodie Foster, Kathy Bates & Whoopi Goldberg. I guess men act too, but I wouldn't about that.

1 Jeremy Irons - Reversal of Fortune 2 Martin Landau - Ed Wood 3 Kathy Bates - Misery 4 Marisa Tomei - My Cousin Vinny 5 Whoopi Goldberg - Ghost Coming up with my top 5, I realized all of my choices were basically comedic performances, which just shows the Oscars need to nominate and award more comedic roles. Also, well, 3 of my choices were from 1990 (and Joe Pesci may be in my top 10, which just shows 1990 is one of the best batch of Oscar winning performances in Oscar history). Also, all 5 of my choices are basically commanding and scene stealing performances, which is probably why they won. Jeremy is just so perfect in this, I have to admit, every time I watch the movie, I end up doing impressions of von Bulow's voice, it's just too infectious.

Dead Man Walking is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I dare say, it was life changing. Susan Sarandon deserved that Oscar - all the more impressive when you look at her formidable competition. Love this series - looking forward to Part 2!

Stupid, stupid rain - another Impromptu mention!! But this was followed by a Metropolitan mention? (The surrealists were just a lot of social climbers…) Louis Virtel is messing with my 1990s LaserDisc collection! Maybe we'll have a Screenplays That Should Have Won Trophy Strife episode at some point… As for 90s performances, I would give to (not in particular order) 1) Jeremy Irons in Reversal of Fortune 2) Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas 3) Susan Sarandon in Dead Man Walking 4) Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive 5) Dianne Wiest in Bullets Over Broadway 6) Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love (I actually didn't enjoy the movie that much, Judi is a delight!) 7) Kim Basinger in LA Confidential (because it's a token win for my fave movie of the 90s, LA Confidential) 8) Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects (I KNOOOOWW. I know.) 9) Emma Thompson in Howards End

So glad to see Marisa Tomei, because I will fight anyone who criticizes that performance. We all remember the courtroom scene ( and there's at least one law professor who uses it to teach students how to correctly introduce expert testimony) but you have to watch the whole thing to remember how that scene wraps up all the movie's threads almost at once, not to mention the chemistry between her and DeVito. It's funny you would bring up Helen Hayes (aside: "Airport" is the most inadvertently feminist film ever made - with all the female characters moving the plot along, figuring out the core mystery and being the bravest on the flight) and the black hole if she weren't in the picture, because I'd put Whoopi Goldberg in "Ghost" in that exact same category. I saw that at a free preview and my comment card was basically "Whoopi Goldberg makes the picture work."

People who say Samuel L Jackson was robbed of the Oscar, clearly haven’t seen Ed Wood, because what Martin Landau makes in this movie is phenomenal, ane he rightfully swept that awards season, his is one of my favorite Oscar wins in any acting category ever
