His one scene in JFK should have won him the Oscar. It's a masterclass in dialogue delivery. He holds the screen for 15 minutes, his voice barely rising above a whisper. I can't think of many actors who could pull that off. Another fantastic cameo is in Backdraft. It's a fairly bland film, but his performance is chilling.

JFK, released in 1991, was 28 years after the assassination, and I was 9 years old. In 1960 I remember being aware of the election, and I became enamored of Kennedy. This scene was an internalization of my suspicions, and probably for many other viewers as well. The national press dismissed JFK the movie for obvious reasons, one being guilty. Sutherland owned property in the area and would sometimes turn up in my town to enjoy the view of the lake or dine with friends. In our small rural town, it's a matter of time before you eventually run into either Bernie Sanders or Donald Sutherland. The locals miss him. He seemed to be quite comfortable with the fact that no one here bothered him or begged for his autograph or selfie. I once encountered him on the dock of our local marina. That's my Donald Sutherland story. 🍁

I had dinner with Donald Sutherland and his son Roeg in LA in the mid-2000s. He was in one of the movies my uncle was part of, called American Gun. Donald was very genuine and warm. I remember him saying at the time that he was such a big fan of sushi that he ended up with mercury poisoning. RIP.

I am an actress and in a theatre class I was asked if I could pick one man to play my father in the film. Who would it be…? Donald Sutherland was the answer. The truth is he was too good for an Acadamy award. of course he wanted one, but it wasn’t his main thing. And he didn’t need one either. I was always told that if your MO was to be famous ? Or win an Academy Award? You’ll fail. You have to strive to be an actor first theme and awards are secondary.

Sutherland was on Nixon's enemy list. Paul Newman, also on Nixon's list. Newman said he was very proud of that honor. I doubt not winning an academy award bothered Sutherland one bit. He was a brave, sincere, ardent; political/human rights activist. @peterwalter. Oddly enough, that was the one performance I didn’t like. Not his fault though. He did what the director wanted. In the book, Mr Bennett wasn’t an eccentric. He was rather reclusive, but very correct and formal. He would never have received another gentleman when he was half-dressed, sitting in a messy room. Instead of smiling , he would have been confused and trying not to look embarrassed.

OH! I just remembered why my brain was telling me, "of course he was blacklisted," but I couldn't remember why. He was in the travelling anti-Vietnam war comedy/music show with Jane Fonda, called "FTA" (which stood for "eFF The Army"). I think I watched that documentary on Netflix, it was wild. We're starting to cover some things now, like pharmaceuticals and dentistry, but things like mental health, optometry, and auditory care are still being left out. The moment I knew he was a great actor came in Ordinary People. Near the end of the film his wife played brilliantly by Mary Tyler Moore comes down to find him crying at a darkened kitchen table. She asks him why hes crying and he says: "I realized that I dont love you anymore. And I dont know what Im going to do without that." The way that he delivers the line is so devastating that it freezes your heart. Said resolutely, at the end of a long cry. But he looks so drained and tired and heartbroken. I'll never forget that moment.

I find the reason for Sutherland not winning an Oscar rather unconvincing. Jane Fonda was also politically very active on "the Left" ,and protested openly against the Vietnam war, and even posed with North Vietnamese soldiers on an army tank in Hanoi, yet she won no less than 2 Oscars, one in 1971 and one in 1978.

The teenage Sutherland just had to have been called 'Willy Wingnut'. Excellent actor though, Odball being the first character I ever saw him portray, he was fantastic in that movie, Kelly's Heroes - 'Always with them negative waves Moriarty, knock it off', sublimely funny character. RIP Donald.

Klute was terrific, directed by the late Alan J. Pakula. Controversial, about call girls, Bree Daniels, the Jane Fonda role. One of my favorite movies. Donald Sutherland was great, he should have been awarded Best Actor Oscar. He acted the role of a small town private detective who saved Bree Daniels' life. Fine thriller, got Jane Fonda Best Actress Oscar. D Sutherland was a great actor. RIP Donald Sutherland, you did get your Oscar. You left us an awesome filmography. B r a v o ♡☆☆☆☆!

He may also have been a concern because of his admiration for and portrayal of Norman Bethune. Bethune was a Canadian doctor who went to China during their civil war to tend the injured community soldiers

I always enjoyed his acting. I was born in the Saint John General Hospital seven years after Donald Sutherland was born there. I was in a film with Lee Marvin but ended up on the cutting room floor 🤣

When you wake up every morning and you haven't won an Oscar you don't all of a sudden have a nervous break down. I don't believe Donald Sutherland would have worried about winning an Oscar cause if he did he never showed and yet he was a very good actor in my eyes.

Actually he wasn't as radical as his cousin Norman Bethune. The most famous Canadian no one has ever heard of. As a surgeon he invented tools that are still in use today. Invented the MASH unit when in the Spanish Civil War. Went to China to help Mao fight off the Japanese. Mao wrote an essay about him in his Little Red Book. At one point everyone in the country had to memorize it! To this day school kids in China do a unit on him in Grade 4.

Wait, you just barely alluded to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It's the best version of the many that have been made, in my estimation. When I think of Sutherland, I think of that film. Also, he was Mr Bennet in that not-great version of Pride & Prejudice.
