How's this for a little JDM nugget? A 2008 Nissan Clipper NT100, which is really a badge-engineered Mitsubishi Minicab U60. 657cc of fury, allied to a three-speed automatic - but is it actually any good? This road test attempts to find out. Filmed around Cwmtydu, Ceredigion.

The Japanese have some really sensible vehicles, I love JDM blind spot mirrors. I investigated importing a Mitsubishi Minicab MiEV but it was 150% of the cost of a Leaf so we went with an (admittedly more practical) Leaf which does have wind deflectors.

I used to see small trucks and vans like that all over the place at one time, then they all seemed to disappear overnight to be replaced with berlingo type vans. When Miss Hubnut has her driving licence I think she needs a kei truck or van of her own!!

When you think that's just 55cc (and one cylinder) more than Elly, yet has almost twice the horses, the japanese do know how to squeeze the power out of little engines... :P

I had a Honda Acty ( 2nd Gen 550) when I had a wheelie bin cleaning business- it was fun to drive and an amazing tool for stop/ start work like that. I earned a lot of money with it.. I carried a 250ltr water tank & it would accelerate well. Even full. But if the tank was nearly empty & you braked hard it has a tendency to sound like a plane landing as the water slammed against the tanks baffles the weight on the front/rear would shift back & forward lowering or adding traction ( it was better to drain the tank at the end of the day) ironically the petrol jet washer I carried also had a Honda 350cc engine but that only put out 18hp and cost more per hour to run than the Acty.

@@Zadster most kei cars with this capacity have turbos. I had a Daihatsu Copen 659 turbo and still have a copen with a normal 1.3 engine. The 1.3 isn't that much quicker than the turbo model. The smaller engine probably suits the car better as it's more revy.

4:15 For a time it became a semi-cab style for safety and straight-line stability, but this was unpopular because of its small turning capacity. The rear wheels were moved to the front to reduce the minimum turning radius, but this resulted in too much load being placed on the rear wheels when loaded, and the truck version was eventually converted to a full cab.

In Japan Kei-trucks (or Keitora) were are very popular in rural regions where it can be quite hilly and most roads are unsealed, but as they're used to carry many goods slipping wheels are less of a problem (although unsealed roads also help)!

Delightful vehicle and road test! Especially around your neck of the woods, I'd imagine one of these would be a serious gardener's dream-truck...Interestingly, Datsun got its foot-hold in the States w/ their mini-pickups from the early-1960s--very popular w/ the gardeners in California...The various models over the years (I think they were PL320, PL420, PL520 over the years, all the way up to the "Hard-Body" of 1986) could be seen all over Seattle when I lived there...

These are actually quite common in the US state I live in. Both in the RHD and LHD guise. Most counties and the state have small them for maintenance and repair duty in the state and county parks. They are allowed on local roads but no highways. In the 1980's the county I live in had a Daihatsu Rocky 4x4 for park service use. You would not think by looking at them that they could be quite fun to drive but they were surprisingly faster off the line then one would thing. They reminded me of golf carts. The ones in my county all look the same but have different names (minicab, Acty, Hijet) Interestingly enough, a Suzuki Every Van has joined the fleet. i am told it is speed limited to 30mph thanks to a governor in the transmission.

There's companies that resell factory new Daihatsu kei trucks and vans to groudskeepers (they put their own name on them). A company that I worked for had a few. I peeled up the tailgate cover on a mini pickup one day to reveal the Daihatsu label on the tailgate 😂 The crazy thing is that they cost about 90% of what buying a brand new entry level small car does (like $22,000).
