I became fascinated with Custer’s Last Stand when I watched this movie with Dad as a kid. He cautioned me the film was “pure Hollywood” but such a battle really occurred. At least they didn’t have the Cheyenne and Sioux riding around Custer’s command in circles.

Larry Bittke Disney’s Tonka has a decent LSH scene. With Custer sitting and leaning on a dead horse, shouting orders. Tonka has one of the more realistic last stand scenes until son Of The Morning Star in 1991.

For the record, the Native American's never rode around in a circle to be shot at. In fact, Wagon Trains actually made a square. The Circle came about because of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Native Americans rarely attacked Large Wagon Trains, only a handful of times that happened. Usually, if you were in a Train of 80-100 Wagons you were pretty safe. Raiding party's didn't want to have to face 100 guns or more. They would attack small Trains and Individual wagons. Because they could outrun the horses, Railroad Train attacks were also rare. The Native American's were not stupid and usually attacked 'Soft Targets'. Individual isolated houses for example. Of course, disease, battle attrition, the extermination of their food sources, and the ability of the Army to fight in Winter all added up to inevitable defeat.

The movie is more appreciated for the inner workings of the post Civil War Indian Wars politics than the overly heroic inaccurate depiction of the battle. The fact that incompetent military command and greedy politicians led to so many Native Americans (Whole Tribes), Settlers and Soldiers to die pointlessly in a violent unnecessary campaign of conquest was criminal itself.

Unfortunately, this was neither the first, nor the last historical event that Hollywood took liberties with to tell a story. From "Birth of a Nation" onward, Hollywod had always choose to give the Legend, rather than the truth. One day, before I leave here, someone is going to tell me what Hollywood had against the Union. P.S...I still like the way Custer's horse slid to a stop in "They Died With Their Boots On"!💀

Thrilling entertainment,...complete fantasy. Custer had divided his force into three elements and attacked an unsuspecting village from two sides, killing many woman and children. The warriors rallied , drove back Benteen and wiped out Custer and the men who were with him. There was no elaborate “ Indian ambush “, this was a defensive counter attack against a surprise attack on a sleeping village.

I read about some bloody defeats of union troops against indians after civil war, but i blamed it to the fact that US - soldiers often were still armed with old fashioned one - shot - rifles, while the Indians already used Winchester and Revolver - rifles. I would never have guessed that the Indians were consulted by former CSA officers ! The contempt of white officers for the indians was prevalent in their behaviour against the tribes.

@vidimur197711 жыл бұрын
The battle is very close to how happen in reality, because the Custer's division fought with courage until the end; Custer divided his ; Custer died by two bullet wounds and his body was respected, while the others soldiers' corpses were mutilated (took their scalps, hearts and visceras) his battalion divided into 3 sub units (2 of them in pursuit for Indians which some fought bravely as they could while others trapped in despair escaped terrified but still many soldiers were killed shamefully)
@Montague14284 жыл бұрын
That summary contains about as much fiction as this Hollywood movie clip. I'll just pick one point though; it's very 'pop history' to say Custer was respected, Lakota and Cheyenne accounts say they didn't know Custer was there until well after the fighting, and not only that but some have stated that he wasn't mutilated because he was a suicide and it was bad luck to take the scalp of a suicide.
