Keiko - Our Beautiful, Nutball Akita

For those who are interested, here's a full description of the breed: A wonderful family dog - playful, loyal, affectionate and, once trained, extremely well-behaved in the house. Very good guard dog, good with children and people in general (as long as you are not in the process of breaking in, in which case you're on your own), a dog you will love with all your heart and have that love returned with interest. Important to note that Akitas are a very dominant and wilful breed and are not easy to train, so should not be taken on without full research and consideration of what is required. Strong hunting instincts and the need to dominate other dogs should be allowed for when out walking (Basically, they would make good Sumo wrestlers.) Give them plenty of love, train them properly and allow for their natural instincts and you will never regret the day you decided to adopt one.

I had a beautiful american akita or 15 years, until he passed away from cancer.It has been 5 years, and we have decided to get a dog again, in fact 2 days! This is one breed different than the others. Get an akita!!!

There's a very important duty we inherit when we first adopt that 12 week old, ball-of-fluff puppy, and that's to do the right thing by them when the time eventually comes. Cried the whole time. Just lost my Akita of 11 years, Sheba last Tuesday. This one acted just like her, looks like her too. It was like the perfect video because I don't have one to watch so thank you. I'm so sad 😞 I just vacuumed up some of her fur because I couldn't do it last week. So funny, we have had in our family a Husky a Malamute a Pitsky ( before it was hip, pit bull husky) and our remaining baby boy a Cane Corso. Your sweet girl has a kinship to the husky for sure. We just lost our oldest Akita and her name was Kieko too, just spelled a little differently. We had our girl almost 13 years and she is missed every single day. I am fortunate that she gave us one litter and I kept one of her daughters and that angel is pretty amazing too. Kieko knew she was of Royal Lineage, her daughter is a lot more laid back. Be careful before you consider getting an Akita though. You don't own them, they own you.

She looks so adorable. I had a husky for 14 years and after loosing him I had settled on getting an Akita. I got him last December at 3 months of age and he's been great. He's just over a year old now and I plan on getting some more advanced training done with him, because he's been doing great so far with anything I've tried teaching him.

What a beautiful video. I also have an Akita named, Yuki (Japanese meaning snow). Unfortunately, he has never been in the snow, but I promised him for Christmas in 2015 I would take him to Vermont or Utah so that he could run free and roll around in the cold stuff. I think Keiko would love Yuki, Juliette. Word of warning, though - snow does strange things to an Akita's head. It makes them go nutty in the most delightfully hyperactive way. He will think he's a pup again.

7 years after getting a 7 month old girl, then a year later a boy puppy, both 'rescues', they are the best family I've ever had. Akitas are different, they are independent thinkers. We can respect that. Sweetest to family and friends, perfectly fearless as protectors, we strive to keep them safe so they never have to risk themselves, just warn us and we'll come with 'backup'. They decide they are part of the family, and that is that. Closest thing to a domestic wolf you will find. incredibly fastidious, they were known as the Japanese Royal Dog... even the american sub-breed has this wonderful sense of decorum. Gentle, but fiercely protective. Previously, we had a mix- border collie, poodle, and akita, smartest dog you can imagine. Off leash perfect. The more love (and patience) you give these canine angels, the better they respond. Negative punishment does NOT work- they are too smart. Trust that they understand gentle rebukes and love. If possible, a boy and girl together are the perfect mix. They will love each other like crazy, act as a pack for protection, read each other's minds... and there is nothing like seeing them walking together around the neighborhood- not just beautiful beyond compare, but happy to say hello to babies and toddlers with kisses and silliness.

She is absolutely adorable - reminds me so much of our male Akita Murphy. It's like watching his female counterpart. We even have the same bay window that he watches from, keeping an eye on the world outside. Watching Keiko off lead gives me hope that one day we will be able to do the same with Murphy. It is easy to see how loved she is.

How can you not love an Akita? The way they greet you when you come home is enough to make you forget the pains of the day. I don't know how old Murphy is but Keiko is three and we still have to watch her carefully. The hunting instinct that makes an Akita chase anything that moves with no regard for their owner seems to be under control (she listens and stops now), but she is still very dominant with other dogs. We let her off lead whenever we can, but we certainly need to pick our times. I would suggest brief periods of freedom in controlled, enclosed areas, reward him with fussings and more freedom whenever he resists his instincts and listens to you (and instant loss of freedom when he doesn't), and gradually build up. If it works for a female, it should definitely work for the male!

thank you so very much for sharing this video. i was in tears, literally. i lost my boy 4yrs ago and have been heartbroken and unwilling to 'go again' since. like loretta below, I've had akitas since the 60's when my wife(don't tell the 'martisans!!') stole an akita from the japanese pound. they have NEVER failed to be the most wonderful dogs ... and friends. i am now, at almost 70, ready to have another friend in my life. btw ... an 'aggressive akita' comes from 2 things ... 1/ and ignorant owner and/or 2/ not being socialized in a 'family' where a 'transition' MAY be smoother(but don't expect anything!)

I have two akitas,one male was a rescued one, then when we realized how great he was we bought a female akita to keep him company. He raised her and tought her to become an akita. They are unique dogs, incredibly smart and problem solvers. They are funny , playful and extremely affectionate and they are great companions.

My dog is an Akita/Sheltie mix. She's wonderful. Has a loud bark but would never hurt a person. She used to be aggressive towards other dogs when she was young, but is more mellow now that she's old. If I knew then what I know now, I would have tried to socialize her better. Fortunately, she has never hurt another dog.

I grew up with Akitas. In my opinion, they're the best dog breed. We had 5 so far. Our brown one Niko loved my son his entire life. We kept his son Snowball and Snowball loves my son just as much.

Had an Akita named Hugo who passed away yesterday, the 31st of July 2020. He was very loyal, playful and was well trained. I got him after I lost my wife 5 years ago and Hugo had been a big support system to me and my 3 children. We are so devastated losing him and we loved him so much. Words cannot express the pain we are feeling right now and he was only 4.5 yrs old due to be 5 years this September 2020. This is a very good breed when/if trained well. They are also a good family dog and are very protective. Didn't realise how painful it could be losing him as he suddenly passed away in the middle of the night. I hope we can get through this as the pain of losing him is overwhelming. If I was asked again, will I have another Akita, I would say a big Yes ! Remember, Hachiko the movie ? That dog was loyal. This was my experience with my beloved best friend, HUGO, who I miss very dearly !
