AoToGo This lady clearly has bias which is understandable as she’s American. I’ve had Akitas both Japanese and Americans all my life. The “Japanese Akita” is actually called the Akita inu. The Akita inu is just as tall as the American however they aren’t usually as bulky. This said I’ve seen Akita inu’s who are larger than American Akitas in bone structure and overall size. It’s not true that the original Akitas in Japan were more similar to the American Akita of today in size and appearance. They were much more similar to the Akita inu which is why the Japanese separated the 2 breeds. They wanted specifically to go back to the original Akita before they were crossbred with other breeds like the Japanese Tosa for fighting purposes and the Americans crossbred them with even more breeds. This is why the Japanese Akita inu only comes in 3 colours, because they were the only colours the original Akitas came in. The Pinto and black coloured Alitas came from breeding with the Pinto Tosa and black mastiffs and German Shepard’s.
@Steve-ps6qw5 жыл бұрын
I believe both had GSD in them to keep them from being killed off by the Imperial Japanese govn't during WWII. I have heard that the American Akita does have some English Mastiff too but they both should have GSD...anyway, with selective breeding you can create anything as dog DNA is so mutable...hence why they seem to get cancer a lot.

My kids when they were babies used to climb up on my dogs grabbing fist fulls of fur to get up. When the dogs got tired of it they gently knock the kids down and put their paws on the kids back and lick them for tens of minutes. At night the male would lay at the end of the hall by the kids room doors and the female would sleep on my daughters bottom bunk. I've bred Akitas for 27 years and get accolades for my dogs temperament. My dogs have defended my family from home intruders and my little 85 lbs runt protected my daughter from a black bear. I'll never own another breed.

Xerin Knightwalker They definitely appear not to be an entry level dog so having prior pet experience would be amazing beforehand, they also seem to need heavy financial requirements due to needing large spaces and of course consuming more food. I had two Akita back in the 1980's. Both were gentle creatures especially with young children. Although they would pick up on if you liked a person or not and the demeanor would go to protective mode. Had a guy come to my door looking for a room mate of mine who wasn't home, said he would just come in and wait and I told him no, he started to push the issue and that is when my Akita male came up behind me and forcefully nudged between myself and the partially opened door with a deep low growl. Fellow jumped back, asked if the dog was always inside and then decided he'd just call when room mate was home.

So true, it is hard to relay to people the very low and powerful growl they have. Probably has to do with their large heads but it is very distinct...almost demonic. I haven't heard any other large breed dog with the same growl. When they bark, which is not that common, it is extremely loud and thunderous, to the point that it actually hurts our ears. Our walls literally vibrate/shake, no joke!

Akitas are super observant- they love their families- and are very protective. I trust them unseen with my grandkids. They are stubborn, but affectionate to family. They should be socialized as much as possible- this will NOT negate their protectiveness- Akitas are smart as hell in this respect. They are hunters- yes. Gentle- short training sessions are best. This will work, but it take patience. Patience is a key with akitas- i was okay to begin with but these dogs taught me. Patience is paramount with akitas- they respect it- almost as if it were a physical thing. They are a are primitive feral breed, different from usual domestic dogs- but once you get to know and respect them- once you go akita- you never go back.

Cleo is the sweetest girl to humans and is a wonderful big sister to my Shepard/Boxer mix Joe.(also a rescue)I don’t worry about her around kids either.she has never shown any aggression towards humans unless she senses danger. SHe has a gentle mouth and doesn’t mind people around her when she eats at all. She is very smart,still playful,stubborn as a mule and lazy. She loves food. We have had some health issues but she solders on without complaint. I do not let her socialize with other dogs. But she has a very full life! Blowing of the coat is a real thing and incredibly time consuming and messy. Oddly, enough Cleo doesn’t like the vacuum cleaner on. LOL full drama mode when I am trying to clean up after the “Queen” Cleo. Can’t imagine my life without her.

He tried to bite me once (on my neck!) even though I was basically his 2nd owner (I took him for long walks and fed him often). Eventually he bit someone very severely and had to be put down. I once came home from work to find a man trapped on my roof, he was the cable guy. I had beware of dog signs which he saw but ignored when he whistled and no dog appeared he thought it was ok to come in the yard. He barely escaped being bit by my dog Ninja. He was up there for 2 hours. He said Ninja never once barked but his growl scared the crap out of him. He said He never heard or saw him until he heard a low growl and turned around and saw my 115 pound dog he thanked god he was able to pull himself up on the roof. Ninja then calmly peed ,kicked his back legs found his shady spot and proceeded to nap. Every time the guy would move elsewhere on the roof Ninja would follow. This was in Las Vegas during the summer so it was well over 100. The poor idiot learned his lesson I hope.

Female was golden Male was iffy at worst but still golden. They were large 120 130 pound American. They killed everything in the yard from small moles and shrews to huge raccoons. I gave them my people scraps mixed with their food. Skin disorders racked my female in the end and my Males stomach flipped. They were around 11. Heart breaking when they start falling apart. My akita is going on 9 still young at heart its amazing. My family got her when we were young so unfortunately parents were busy with work and couldnt take her to the dog park regularly so shes not the best socializer. But she is so loving of all humans but will growl at strangers who approach me unprovoked. I love my Sakura

Akitas are such beautiful dogs. I know I have had 3 of them. My Akita loves people. She loves when people give her love. She goes to the micro brewery every week and it’s like she is “Norm” from Cheers. She is their official greeter

I had an Akita. we lived in a bad neighborhood in south Hayward ca .. when my daughter Was a toddler she grabbed his ear and he just head butted her over Like a goat. But when a tweeker came around he hit the Security screen door so hard he bent it . Lucky for that guy the door held up. I never Tried to make him a watchdog just loved him pet him fed him take him to the hills for long walks that dogs instincts were to protect . Natural . Socializing them from a very young pup is a great idea because they can be lethal when full grown

One of our dogs would bloat often. Turned out he had Pyloric Stenosis, a too small opening between the stomach and the small intestine. He did have a gastroplexy, and we stopped feeding kibble and switched to refrigerated food. Oh, and a anti-gas pill every day. No more bloating after that thankfully.

My Akita does not like strangers, but he has saved my daughter's life. When a boy (who was 8) started to strangle my daughter (who was 6) and the babysitter (the boy's mom) left the children alone (she actually left house!) my Akita dragged the boy off her. As soon as the boy was off her, he let go and pushed my daughter against the wall and stood on guard. I came in to find the boy crying and bleeding and no babysitter. I cleaned the boy and then his mother walked in. She just grabbed him and left. Our friendship was ruined that day, but i found out how much i could trust my boy. (I still do not EVER leave my children unsupervised around dogs. )

I had a pure bred Japanese brindle for years, and he was my baby boy. When I got him, at 2 yrs, there was an instant connection. He walked over to me looking me straight in the eyes the whole time, stopped just in front of me and sat at attention until I put my hand out. One sniff and that was it. He would sleep right at my feet or off to the side of the bed. If I got sick I would wake up with him staring at me until I told him I was okay. He was very social with those all of our kids and friends. He was a wonderful father to the litters he sired, and spent almost as much time giving the pups attention as the dame did. Wonderful pictures of that. I had a family member stay with us for a couple of years who was in poor health at the time, and he would get up in the middle of the night and go to their room to check on them, and he felt I was okay he would stay in their room for the remainder of the night. He was my shadow, and watchman. His name was Topper. My boy now is almost the same personality, but he just came out of his stupid stage, he's 2 now and a joy. We named him Angelo, and the running joke is we have a Japanese dog with an Italian name, so he likes sushi, and pasta. Thanks for the video. Mike

I owned one. They are NO joke! He used to go after pits when he was 6 months old! God help if I kid threw their ball in our yard. They could not even ring the bell to tell us. Sooooo many crazy stories. Be careful and take control when they are young. Very smart, damn near potty trained himself! He was AKC registered. I never showed or anything tho. I had an American Akita. 105lbs. at 5 months old!

Weve had Akitas since I was 2 years old so 21 years and this video is spot on. Our current one is very friendly with the people he knows or when we are there. If it is someone he doesn't know or we aren't there can be very aggressive. And he can be very stubborn. They really do need experienced dog owners too many fools get them and cant handle them. Also should mention my sister left her bicon friese out but didn't supervise bit the end of his tail off. Akita didn't harm the Bichon in anyway. They have an excellent temperament, but he has attacked animals that have came into our gardens/yards.

sume abaham I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure the Americans added some german shepherd blood, and possibly St Bernard. Either way, I prefer the American over the Japanese.
@ba88987 жыл бұрын
derin That's not always true. American Doberman lines are smaller than European lines. Same with the boxer.
@ba88987 жыл бұрын
sume abaham the old Japanese akitas may have been bigger than they are today but the American akita clearly has german shepherd blood in my opinion. You only need to look at the facial features and the muzzle shape (That's not a criticism of the American type, which, like I said, I prefer)

I've got a Akita/American Bull Terrier mix. I was given him as a young teen and He is still with me today. He is turning 14 this Year! i wouldn't trade him for the world. Always has been playful full of energy, strong as hell, friendly towards people but hates other dogs he doesn't know especially males like she said. He was my first dog. Anyone that is kind to them they will be kind back. I'm not too sure about needing to be a dog pro to own one. Maybe were mine isn't full breed it was easier. I know why she recommends the 6' fence though lol. They can JUMP!

bhoj03 - what she meant is that before owning an Akita, you should have owned another breed that is not as powerful as Akitas, they tend to be stubborn and dog-aggresive, so if you don´t raise them properly, you wil end up getting in trouble with your dog. That´s what happens with many bully breeds owners who can´t control their dogs in some situations.
@KillerKaler7 жыл бұрын
^ all good advice, just means start with an easier temperament breed and then work upto the akita, the job hunting reference is not even close bby

It all depends on the leader or handler, if you train your dog, no matter what breed, whether a yorkie or a pitbull, a doberman or a chihuahua, from the very beginning, you prove to them to be a good leader and give them the discipline they need and search for, you will have a wonderful companion and friend by your side, if you don't you will have a undisciplined , troubled and dangerous dog that will give you problems.
