“One of the reasons I came into politics is to stop things that I think are stupid ideas from happening.”
Peter Mandelson reveals Labour's election manifesto secret - to not repeat the mistakes of the Conservatives. Daniel Finkelstein and Polly Mackenzie look at when manifestos work and why parties should be careful not to leave "unexploded ordnance" to be detonated by the opposition.
And Peter Mandelson painfully recalls Labour’s most embarrassing election defeat - to H’Angus the Monkey in Hartlepool.

The secret: actually f***ing delivering on your promises.

That's why Starmer isn't over promising but he's getting rinsed for that by some people.

@@davecross4493 I know. I get the hate but quite frankly he is set to win the greatest victory in the history of Labour at present, why risk a change of course. Also I think Rachel Reeves has said Labour plans to under promise and over deliver so there is a reasonable chance that he might do a lot of what the left wing of the party wants. The upcoming general election is also a once in a lifetime chance to actually destroy the Tories as a party for ever leaving the Lib dems as the de facto right wing party in the UK with the extreme right wing fracturing among several fringe parties. This would allow Labour to drift Left and remain electorally viable, or in a more extreme case allow a huge chunk of the party to break off and form a more left wing party that is viable from the outset.

No, thats not secret. The secret is saying whatever it takes to get elected. That's what the lesson from the Tories is.

Feel sorry for Sunak? He’s just signed off on new oil and gas that won’t benefit the British people- but will benefit Infosys (his family). He’s clinging on to power to try and get a trade deal with India that won’t benefit the British people- but will benefit Infosys (his family). I’ll save my sympathies for the British people, they’re being shafted by a man they never voted for.

The house of lords is supposed to be non partisan, which clearly is not- so the next government, need to slim it down- ideally to a historical footnote.

I think you could swap Peter Mandelson and Jacob Rees-Mogg, and you'd hardly notice the change so far as mannerisms are concerned.

If he continues in the same vein with pro WEF open borders then he won't last long. The people are passed at the hopeless leadership of Sunak, if Starmer continues it, then it could get nasty.

2019 - 80 seat tory majority. 2024 - Labour certain to win and the tories facing electoral annihilation. Tories - literally lowest polling in their whole history. Labour - over 20 points ahead in the polls. Doesn't look like it's dying from here mate. Wishful thinking maybe? You a tory or a Corbynite, by any chance? lol

Regardless of politics isn't he utterly creepy and loathsome? Had to resign twice for taking money and lying to his mortgage company. Lied again, lobbying for people who wanted passports and took their money. Should have served a few years in nick.

At 12:25, Peter Mandelson said you can feel a little sorry for Sunak. I don't. He has been far too willing to support or be an apologist for bigotry in his party. Thus allowing them to use his 'browness' as a shield from accusations of racism. 1. He defended Johnson after he made racist remarks about Muslim women and black people. 2. He went against his belief that the Rwanda Bill wouldn't work and supported it anyway (no integrity and spineless). 3. And he didn't call out Lee Anderson's racism relating to Sadiq Khan. Good riddance now the mean spiritedness and cruelty in his party, that he rolled with, is now consuming him.

If you want really bad political videos that have been well-circulated, you have to go back to Neil Kinnock in the late eighties/early nineties. Just painfully embarrassing, especially the one with Tracy Ullman. The 1992 election was his to lose: no wonder he lost twice!
