If you’re there for a while and plan on using the bullet trains and the JR line, I recommend the JR pass (purchase this BEFORE entering the country. The JR pass is only available to foreigners). But if you plan on only being in the Tokyo area, getting a suica card when you get there is fine. My other advice is please do your best to “blend in” and not stick out like a nail. It’s impossible as a foreigner, but just try your best to be polite and generally follow whatever everyone else is doing as an act of consideration. Oh! And pack LIGHT. I would not recommend bringing a large suitcase if you can help it. Bring a smaller one that rolls, plus a backpack or something. Trust me you will not enjoy having a massive suitcase with you.
