That bass drum sound in the intro is so wonderful, so beautiful and so powerful, that I am practically crying with joy. This guy blows my mind.

His right hand usually plays straight plain and simple but his left hand is the real key to his playing. It fills in the gaps.

I first saw Keith in concert at the Berks Jazz Festival in Reading, PA in 2000 or 2001 with the Heads Up Super Band. I was totally stunned, shocked and amazed by his playing, which has already become legendary. I can't wait for this DVD to come out !!

Keith is, IMO the best all around, do anything with his hands and feet, chops upon chops, creates new sounds that are very new and fresh!!!! Thanks Keith... Mike

I have seen Keith play live 6 times, and I am most impressed with his Hi-Hat control and how he drives a groove with it. This man has inspired me to work harder in my own playing.

I just saw Keith with Steely Dan last night at The Wharf amphitheater in Orange Beach, Al. The man has a command of so many different styles, it's silly! They did AJA. It was a show-stopper! AND it was only about a third of the way through the show! He can make you dance one minute and then slay you the next with some quick 5-second solo thing he pulls out of his ass! I'm Impressed! No wonder the guy has played with Sting, Steely Dan and soon James Taylor! Go Keith!!!!!

he sets the toms flat like ginger baker....u know the guy has got great touch when you hear the drums unmixed and comin through the camera mike and they sound even....i know this guy has alot of experience playing small rooms...his ideas are just as valid as hearing piano or anything else...wonderful stuff...oozing craft and experience.....
@chochemerlyn12 жыл бұрын
It's because he loves to groove! And, even though he variates it like crazy and probably improvises most of them, groove is groove and it sounds like groove! But if you pay attention, he serves up all kinds of fresh stuff, and having a spontaneous percussive conversation that sustains that fat and flowing of a groove with super clean articulation while maintaining it greasy and dirty is not a trick, but a whole show of magic!
@DancingSpiderman15 жыл бұрын
Drummers touring in a band DO NOT make millions of bucks; that would be an exaggeration. Becker and Fagan most likely do not each break 1 million a year. He does have the best gigs on the planet. But, you right.... Carlock's the man

A CARLOCK DVD!!!?? my life is complete
@phillip_costovski15 жыл бұрын
This guy is soon becoming a large influence on my playing, similarly is Gavin Harrison. I love his use of sextuplet hi hat polyrhythms layered over those syncopated ride grooves, that just blew me away when i first heard it in this video.
@terribleterrizm1912 жыл бұрын
I too, make a living playing the drums. I think about my setup and technique all the time, too. I just don't get hung up on it. I just find it ridiculous that drummers can't just watch and listen to someone as incredible as Keith Carlock without analyzing every little thing. Like I said before, it's music, not math.

I went to see him last night in Sunderland he was awsome!!!

Rudder was founded at UNT. He was been around the campus with Helbing and Soph most of 2000-2006. Wanna see pictures lol?
@mechmove13 жыл бұрын
His background is marching, simular Steve Gadd, and those chops DO come out. But the "unorthodox" movements produce the most happening groove the world has ever seen; sounds almost like a Marching Shuffle - New Orleans, etc. He lays it down so uniquely and definitively with confidence. I wonder what the story is behind the double press hits on the snare and hats; looks like it came from drum corp, perhaps a direct reference to his original training (?)
@DeanWuksta15 жыл бұрын
did u watch and listen to simple things like how perfect his sticking was on that practise pad/snare clip. Not to mention his left hand/kick combo's with ostinato right hand goin, unique sense of timing and groove, very special. I do understand why you're more drawn to these other more 'band based' drummers (except Lang who's more of a soloist) but Carlock has so much to offer, you may have to just listen more carefully, there's a lot goin on : )

Love that bass drum....sounds like a bomb
@boeder10115 жыл бұрын
His bass drum is wide open. You get that sound if you use regular heads front and back (like a Remo Ambassador or Evans G1). I've been getting the same thing with a black dot on the batter side and a regular ol' white ambassador on the front. John Bonham played his bass drum like this too.

@kage197415 жыл бұрын
Peter Erskine once said that if you let the sticks breathe drums become what they are.... musical instruments. Schools of technique are like opinions. Keith sounds natural, not controlled or taut (taught). Like Louis Armstrong said...'if you can pat your foot to it, it's good music. Don't think about it.' He's as refreshing but admittedly not nearly as important as Louis Armstrong (who also repeated his licks over the years) but he has a genuine message. His 'voice' transcends his technique.
@kage197415 жыл бұрын
Awesome musical, yes MUSICAL, drummer. Speed and chops with no CONTEXT do not impress me. Keith deserves the attention he is getting.

I heard a funny quote about Oscar Pettiford (who also played with an "unorthadox" style) on an NPR jazz profiles podcast. I don't remember who said it but to paraphrase it, "I've seen a lot of guys playing with perfect technique... but they weren't playin' shit.....".

I disagree that Keith's style is choppy- I feel he flows around that kit with incredible grace, especially considering the amount of notes he gets in sometimes. Attempt to break down some of that rudiment work he uses on the big fills and then try to call him predictable! His grooves are all very musical. My guess is that Keith became Steely Dan's drummer through years of hard work and dedication, a deep passion for music, a very individual style, seasoned musicianship and a great personality.
@plerryferry14 жыл бұрын
does anybody know the name of the song he plays from 5:35 until the end? love that tune.. great drummer, nice style. though i don't personally like the sound of his bass drum it's nice to hear someone who tunes his kit to his own needs, regardless of what people might consider to be 'normal'

@sjproductions100 It looks to coincide with the way he angles his snare. I guess so you don't get those accidentals rim shots.

Keith Carlock... a drummer so good and charismatic, he should have his tutorial DVD narrated by the movie previews guy, oh wait... the movie previews guy is dead...
@PlymouthVT12 жыл бұрын
No they sound like a world class drummer. You can't play muted drums in a rockin' loud live band. So...professional drummers practice & play wide open. No dampeneing. And god damn whan a dude like this is kickin them and your close by its pretty much the best fucking thing ever.
@AgileDumpling14 жыл бұрын
how could you scroll facebook or twitter on your phone when keith's drumming? (re: :37 - :42)
@UpjoanCrawford15 жыл бұрын
Well cglcon, Don Fagen, Walt Becker, Grover Washington Jr, James Taylor, Wayne Krantz, Mr Sting, Dianna Ross, Leni Stern and Tal Wilkenfeld would argue your point. But what would they know?
@genecrewbar15 жыл бұрын
Other musicians like playing with him. Predictability is not necessarily a bad trait. Gadd has been using the same "predictable" tool box for 30+ years, but he completely owns every tool in that box. Keith has his tools, and he uses them well. Guys hire him for those tools. When was the last time you guys got hired by players of that calibre for yours?

Hmm when he was playing on the practice pad his traditional grip looks great, but I notice that his fulcrum is waaaaay back on the left stick a lot. Not that it seems to matter for him though :P

I think the hardest job to do on this video has to be held by the guy who sells the snow cones. I say that because I once had a summer job when I was a kid, selling snow cones and believe you me, it is no easy task.

@KarniTreeTones You must have meant to say that he's relatively unknown, not under-rated, for to be under-rated, one must be known.
