Part of what makes Keith such a fun drummer to watch is the huge amount of effort he exerts while creating such delicate, precise ideas. Such passion and energy with those giant arm swings, yet the sticks hit the drums and cymbals lightly, as if slamming on the brakes just before impact. This is drumming at 150%, where the intensity, if not the style, draws parallels with another famous drummer named Keith.

I met Keith when I was a cameraman on The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in NYC some 17 years ago. He was playing with Sting. I was doing the handheld 'drum cam' next to him and was also wearing a Zildjian T-shirt so we inevitably got talking. What a lovely guy. So humble and yet so talented. He'd just done the 'Two Against Nature' album. I was blown away by how good he was. He's up there with Gadd, Vinnie, and of course, Jeff..

I had a chance to see them in Columbia, SC at the Township Auditorium a few years back, and it was truly a “Bucket List” experience. Walter was still with us. As a drummer & percussionist, I would’ve loved to have seen the maestro himself (Steve Gadd) on drums. But, watching Keith Carlock and his amazing playing was a true pleasure. Awesome show. He is truly “Steely Dan” worthy...R.I.P. Walter

I'm watching this guy with a style all his own, killer left hand with traditional grip, and above average hand speed/chops. I was blown away. First saw and heard Keith in 1993 in local clubs when I was living in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He was still studying at N. Texas State. He was playing covers (Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears etc) with a bunch of N. Texas state jazz musicians. Was able to see him for about 3 years before I moved away and he got big. But I could tell he was special. He has a very distinct and recognizable (to me) style.

That's the truth right there. If they're playing with Steely Dan, they have arrived as a drummer IMO. They are a collection of awesome musicians all the way around from the drummers to the backup singers, amazing! I absolutely love Steve Gadd and his touch, dynamics and finesse and Dennis with his unlimited chop vocabulary, both are unbelievable top tier musicians. Keith belongs right there with them, even though he doesn't have the same name recognition. He really has his own thing with the feel he plays with. It's like the emotion of a rock drummer with jazz chops and feels almost like it's all feeling while staying tight in the pocket. Crazy good top tier musicians, all of them. I seen a YT comment the other day that said Steely Dan wasn't all that and that they were played out or over played or something, and I just couldn't understand what they meant. Overplayed on what? I'm an audio engineer and it's almost like an unwritten rule that Aja is such a perfect album from the playing to the production that we all use it as a reference album to tune systems with. When an album is so good that it becomes a benchmark of audio quality, what idiot would say that it's played out? Crazy people. 🤪

I've seen Steely Dan probably 10 times, during the mood swings tour Walter Becker who is never one to heap praise said it best when introducing Keith, he said quote "the best fucking drummer on the planet Keith Carlock". Keith literally steals the show from Donald and Walter and I've never seen anyone do that and Donald and Walter never seem to mind.

I've loved this guy's playing since the first time I saw him, but I never had the level of respect I had for him after listening to "Everything Must Go". I just about shit at the level of groove on that record. When I looked up the information and realized it was him playing, he immediately skyrocketed to being one of my top players. The level of creativity he demonstrates through the substantial use of his left foot is incomprehensible to many of today's drummers.

+David Curtis I'm not a musician and I just recently discovered that there are two different types of drumming techniques: 1. Cross-handed drummers (like Keith Carlock). 2. Open-handed drummers (like Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band). IMO I think open-handed drummers have a better range of sound and technique, but then again, there are cross-handed drummers like Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny Group) who has an incredible sound and incredible technique.
@davidcurtis4478
@davidcurtis4478 8 жыл бұрын
+GREEK HUMMUS Hi Greek, great that you notice both techniques. Both techniques are great just a matter of preference to the individual player. There's players who play both ways example: Dennis Chambers. Another great open-handed player is Billy Cobham. I really enjoy Keith's playing. Keep enjoying music. David Curtis Drumming

This truly depends on what type of music you are playing (Buddy rich referred to Open handed as 'match grip" see video on this.. Some drummers as with Elvis Presley's 70s drummer (forget his name) played both ways all dependent on the song selection it seemed.

What I like of his soloing is that he always stays musical, rather on the groove side, not a bunch of chops put together just to highlight technical skills (a very common thing - sigh! - among the global drumming community). This is what the greats teach, i.e. fellows like Gadd and Erskine, just to name a couple of "golden boys of groove and taste".
