Keith's are solos you always want to hear. They are not just a rudiments demos like so many great but un-creative drummers. His solos are songs.

@@ShrinkRaptor 1st I am a drummer, and studied all the way through school. 2nd I know Keith. 3rd, not every drummer (even the great ones) are as creative as Keith. I am not going to mention any who I believe are not very creative soloists. It's an argument that NO one is interested in. I'll just leave it with Keith is, to me, one of the great living drummers, in every category.

Nobody but nobody plays like this guy, he truly has created his own style, his own sound, his own feel, and all insanely original. The sensitivity is astounding. Barely know what to say other than the music world is enriched by his presence. Period.
@EGOS426 жыл бұрын
I've come back to watch this solo many times. The sound is unbelievable that it's just a single drummer. His flams create a sound of an entire drum line playing. I can't say I've ever seen anybody match his tone and style.

It's one thing to watch and listen to a drummer who has lightning fast hands and feet, but to have style and feel and be funky and soulful is the magic. Keith has it all.

This needs to be mandatory viewing for the new generation of incredible drummers with mad chops and robotic phrasing. True master right here.
@parapickle3 жыл бұрын
No doubt. But consider this: At this very same drum festival, Jojo Mayer gave his most famous performance. The king of mad chops and robotic phrasing done right.

So musical, so pleasant and so beautiful. It has been a long time since I saw an incredible solo such as this. I came to know that Keith Carlock is the one who played on records for 'Desert Rose' by Sting. Amazing drummer.

One of very few drummers I can tolerate soloing. He's so fluid and smooth and creative it's hard not to love his playing. He is on a VERY short list of soloing drummers who is melodic and musical. Weckl, Sucherman, Smith and Dicenso are some of my other faves.
@hansbouman64214 жыл бұрын
I am so glad I stumbled upon this vid. With this solo, Keith puts on show for all to see how original his playing is, his unusual grip of the stick (especially his right hand), his ability to resist instantly "flying off the handle" in some ridiculous attempt to drum faster than the speed of sound that plagues so may modern drummers, which allows people to settle into the groove with him, and only then to dazzle them with more intricate variations on the pattern chosen, and again focussed on musicality rather than speed driven acrobatics, much like Gadd does, but never imitating the man. Hats off to you, Keith!

He has a southern feel to his playing. The first time I heard him I thought, "is he from Louisiana?" Close! From Mississippi. There's a soulful feel that comes out of there and he's got it - along with massive technique of course.

Very precise and delicate drummer with great stage presence. I first watched his performance on Modern Drummer 2005 DVD and loved his style from the first site. Keith has mastered this beat and he plays it so well, that every time I see this video, I watch it through the end. Great drummer!!!

Who the F wouldn’t like this? If you didn’t like this spin, you don’t play. Keith brings an amazing feel and incredible elements to solos- like Steve Jordan, Gadd and other greats. He’s one of the all-time best.

Literally my favorite drum solo for more than 15 years. Carlock is playing music, not only drums. I have now been trying to reproduce this for a while, without ever being able to master it... that left foot play is, to me, the hidden secret of that groove.

One of the few drummers I can listen to solo and enjoy it. Yes, there's some absolutely ridiculous chops but the difference is....they're musical and they're played in such a way that it never sounds forced or designed to impress. His playing is on another level. Groove, feel....The guy has it all...
One great drummer to pattern yourself after. He's a all in one. Now go listen and learn.
