So glad I found this! This is exactly the mod I'm considering doing to a parts built 21 fret Jazzmaster style guitar. At the time I bought the neck, I didn't realize how much I'd miss that 22nd fret. Anyway, thanks for posting this (I realize I'm commenting years after you posted it). lol.

G&L Legacys and Fallouts both have 22 frets and no fretboard overhang. The neck heel is just longer and effectively produces more mass at the neck/body joint. There is absolutely no reason this should not be the standard on modern bolt-neck guitars. 21 frets is completely unacceptable in the 21st century.

Way back when crazy glue was first out I used it to simply glue on a fret that was pre-bent to hug around the back. Just taper file down the ends so strings don't get hooked underneath when you hit the strings hard. A couple people through the years have said 'but that's not correct it's not intonated', my reply has always been "when I'm up there it's all screaching pterodactyls, and stuka's screaming in the night.

Normal tuning, the 22nd fret works with SO MANY keys that you'll find most songs are in. And bending a 21 fret guitar up to the D will push it to a different pickup and won't sound as good in the studio or live as it does at home. It's my biggest complaint about the Noventa line Fender has right now. (I like the Noventa line, I think I want a neck swap on my Jazzmaster though)

I did the same to a 21 fret neck just like that one, but without the inlaid piece. There is plenty of room to just cut another fret slot! If you get it in the right place, it will be right on the corner, and you'll lose a tiny bit of width, but, on the treble side it's no problem, cus it's still under the string, and if you bend the high E, you're only ever gonna bend it upwards. On the bass side it's no problem cus...well you already have that note on 4 of the other 5 strings. It looks a bit odd if you get up close, but the fret is really not missing much off the ends at all. It works perfectly. I was worried more about breaking a piece off the bottom of the fretboard, cus there's not much wood left there, so I held my breath when I pressed the ffret in, but...yup...worked perfectly. Now I can play that ONE song I needed a 22n fret for :D

you can also make a 24 fret neck this way. i had a strat body with 2 humbuckers, i moved the top humbucker down, added a piece of rosewood fretboard and cut new fretlslots. now i have a 24 fret strat

I was wondering if this was possible as I've long wanted several Fender guitars only equipped with 21 frets and the thought of going without 22 causes me stupid amounts of anxiety. I couldn't imagine replacing the neck on said models.

@paolo-12835 жыл бұрын
Yes i believe if you have carpentry skills, you can move the neck pickup backwards, first is you cover the original neck cavity with a piece of wood, flatten and sand them then add your 24 fret extension, then route the new neck pickup cavity, you have to find and buy or make a pickguard without neck cavities so you can measure and calculate the new neck cavity and route them.

would this work for extending fretboards a lot more? say, 24 frets extended to 30?

Why not just add the extra frets to make it 24? Why do companies not make all guitar and bass necks 24 frets for?

So I know 24 frets would mess up with scale length and overlap the neck pickup. But what about 23??????
@paolo-12835 жыл бұрын
You can still do the 24 fret, you can move the neckpickup backwards, you just have to cover the original neck cavity with a piece of wood then route the new neck cavity, then find or make a new pickguard without pickup cavities, route them later once you measure and calculated the distances. There's a Joe Satriani inverview where he says It's better to leave no space between the 24 fret wood extension and the new pickup cavity so you'll have a super strat sound.
