Chick Corea just died. And Keith is another one of the Jazz giants that has helped form the direction of jazz these past 50 plus years. And now I just found out Keith had a couple of strokes in the last 2 years and has lost use of his left hand. Worse than death for a musician whose whole life has revolved around their musical expression. I’m so sad today!!! Along with Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and Bill Evans. All these were my inspiration in1970 when I was introduced to jazz. I’m 75 now and this has really been a bad week!!! My heart is filled with sorrow for the great losses to all of us and to their families.

There is presently no other like Mr. Jarrett, and doubtful there will be again. Because we had Keith Jarrett and Art Tatum in the same century, I was convinced the end of the world was coming soon. :)

love this transcription you canclearly see jarrets melodiscisim. every true musician (improvisor or composer) knows that melody and music in general requieres repetitiona and variation. you can see in his brilliant lines and phrasing how he takes an idea and "plays with it" many times creating many unique variations on the same repetition. its brilliant and the empitimy of music. this transcription is brilliant. excellent work

I believe that the left hand loop has a D played along with the Bb and F (if you're going along with his Tokyo performance)... if you play it that way it sounds much more true to the original (give it a try and you'll see for yourself)

Weren't there 2 different renditions of this? It seems like it was the encore of one of his earlier concerts, maybe Bremen or Lausanne or even Munich. I can't remember now. In the 70s, I owned all the cassettes for his European concerts hedays. He played this same improvisation again to encore the 1984 Tokyo concert. The 1984 version may have been much more dynamic, but it was not new. A truly wonderful piece of piano music, in either version. I wish I could find the earlier concerts--some is on You Tube, but most is not. Lausanne was incredible, but it has all but disappeared.

Amazing Transcription, congratulations on Your incredible work!. i don´t know how You managed to notate those passages out of time in the right hand. There is something mystical on this moment of Jarrett, one of his peaks of connection to a higher power. I hate it when a fellow musician "corrects" the hard work of other, sometimes so bluntly and without any humility or respect. Said that and only a small thing out of curiosity , just noticed that Jarrett seems to play a D on the left hand which makes it a bit harder . (So he plays apparently the full Bb Flat Major triad on first inversion). Nevertheless, is just a minor detail that doesn´t take away anything. Correct me if i´m wrong.

@Andreas Minor re "Why not taking the middle finger on the fist c. The change to the little one would be much more simple". It is very fatiguing for the middle finger to alternate a phrase with any other finger. Just try a trill using middle finger and any other and you will see how tired it gets and prone to errors in timing given much repetition. The index finger is more reliable, and it actually alternates best with thumb or smallest finger, even if the smallest finger is weak in many respects. Hope this helps.

Practise playing in Db, then B, you are using the same black keys , but in Db ,there is an F and a C, but in B you need an E and the B , thats all: DbEbF GbAbBb=F#G#A# BC#D# EF#G#. The first 3 notes of any scale (Harmonic 8 9 10) are the most important , then borrow from adjacent notes 567 123 456

You have to play the two near upper notes (G and A) at once with the thumb finger.

Its written correctly, its just written like that because the notes dont fit on top of each other so they must be written like that. It still means they need to be played together

I would like to see how this would look if the downbeat of the chart occured with the first LH 'C' instead of the 2 f's. They sound like a pickup to the phrase to me. If C actually was his intended downbeat, it would probably put his chords at the end of the piece as downbeat whole notes, with the RH line taking over the role of the ostinato at the very end (pickup included). Just a thought
@Vuvuzella1612 жыл бұрын
I can't be the only one who thinks that left hand is near impossible. It's not that the melody is difficult, it's just insane, in the most beautiful way. If anyone has suggestions to playing the left hand let me know! thanks.
@SergioValenzuela8 жыл бұрын
Is not that hard, you can do it. For me that beautiful pair of notes (G and A, with the thumb), it´s the cherry of the groove, and also a nice springboard to complete the cycle of movement. back into the F on the down beat... with practice it´s totally playable. Improvising so asymmetrically over that is another story and takes a lot of slow practice, but not impossible, unless trying to sound like Jarrett.

Do we know of more recordings of this vamp? He did it in Tokyo, and also in Bremen as an encore in 73. He played it more often, without doubt, and with a bit of luck one of those has been recorded as well!
@db18158 жыл бұрын
he did play an early version of this in stockholm sweden, 72. I wonder if that whas maybe the first time he played it, as he has stated than an encore might sometimes be something that comes of an improvised concert. It's on youtube
@ArthurSieg8 жыл бұрын
I found it, very interesting! In the Sweden version, it seems like he 'arrives' on the theme while improvising, and he departs from it a while later. You can hear that the vamp is developing while he's playing, and he also uses more chords, experimenting with it. It could very well be the first. Thanks a lot!

Jarrett plays the first c in the left hand with his index finger, then changes without leaving the c to the little finger. In this tempo it is a hard thing to change from index to little finger on the same key. Why not taking the middle finger on the fist c. The change to the little one would be much more simple. Any experiences with this point How do you play it? And thank you for this whole lot of work.
