"Songwriting Stories" works as a title for this 1994 Keith Richards interview, but there's a lot more to it. In addition to discussing how he and Mick Jagger approach songwriting, Keith talks about Mick's singing and guitar and harmonica playing, how they rediscover and rehearse songs from their vast catalog, and the recent dramatic change in the Rolling Stones rhythm section with bassist Darryl Jones coming onboard. He also offers insights about Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, and former bandmates Brian Jones, Bill Wyman, and Mick Taylor, as well as blues songwriter Willie Dixon. Keith covers other subjects as well.
This was taped during a two-day period when I also interviewed Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Darryl Jones, and Chuck Leavell. Transcriptions of these originally appeared in "The Rolling Stones: Inside the Voodoo Lounge," a one-shot magazine sold at venues and newsstands during the Rolling Stones’ year-long 1994-1995 World Tour. Audio of the Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood interviews is already available on KZbin, and the others will soon be posted. I hope you enjoy these conversations!
Thanks to Max Crace for permission to use his 1994 photos of Keith, and to engineer/producer Nik Hunt for filming the intro and enhancing the sound of the 30-year-old master tape.

Cool interview. My favorite moment was when they started talking about the Bakersfield country style and Keith seemed to be trying to remember the song Far Away Eyes, but instead said maybe it was Indian Girl, a mistake that no Stones fan could ever come even close to making. Yet another reminder that the artists spend a whole lot less time obsessing about their back catalogues than the rest of us do.

Listening to this just makes you realise how well read Keith is musically and that’s the difference from The Back Thens to the here nows, if you know what I mean 😉

I remember buying this magazine and I still have it. I actually credit it with showing me the true musical spirit of these guys instead of the usual way they were represented in the media. Really great to hear it now

Damn, this is golden. Thank you. I just love the VL/B2B Keith. He seemed so open, elegant and switched on. For anyone who perhaps hasn't - listen to the VL B-Sides. So great.

Another wonderful aspect of this interview is that it's told in the same manner as in his autobiography "Life", in 2010. One lends credibility to the other.
