Keith Sweat is not a name that's mentioned often nowadays, but he was one of the most successful RnB artist of the 90's. He had hit after hit on the RnB charts. This song was one of a few crossover hits that also charted well on the hot 100 going all the way to #2--his highest charting song on that chart. Mariah Sampled his song "Make it last forever" for her "Thank God I found you" remix. The song "I'll give all my love to you" was another major hit and was undoubtedly responsible for a lot of 90's babies. I wasn't a fan of his debut single "I want her," but it was a big crossover hit for him. The song "Nobody" is among my favorite songs by him along with the first 2 I mentioned. In truth, I didn't always get Keith Sweat because his unique voice can sometimes come off whiney and monotone. Over time I've come to respect his ability to make a hit. In many cases recognizing his own vocal limitation by subtly featuring superior vocalists and rappers on his songs. Of the 23 songs he released since 1994, 14 of them had a featured artist. It made sense when he joined legendary vocal powerhouses Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill to form the supergroup, LSG. When I first heard about the project, I thought they were doomed to fail but they surprised with 2 top 10 albums and a top 5 single with "My body." Another artist you should check out is Gerald Levert. His song "I'd give anything" didn't get a lot of shine but it is truly one of the most amazing songs. One of my all time favorites. The female group featured on this song is called Kut Klose. The lead singer, Athena Cage, has one of my favorite female voices from a group. Unfortunately, for these extremely talented ladies they came at a time when there was an influx of girl groups and had trouble standing out and distinguishing themselves in a pool that featured TLC, Destiny's child, En Vogue, and Total. They were dropped from their label, Elektra after just one album. They still perform at old-school shows and festivals these days. When I found out they were still together after all these years, I was surprised. They are one of few girl groups that remain friends and didn't break up, but to be fair, they didn't have the pressures of fame to contend with.
