This ET-8550 printer is amazing when you consider its capacity for a.multiple of tasks and media it can then print, but what inspires thought is not only your demonstration, but your advise from own experience; as an instruction manual good as it is set out, just cannot portray the hidden variables encountered when n use. Excellent review , clear, concise and very informative . I am considering upgrading from my old XP605 to the 8550 for a number of reasons . The XP605 has served me very well, happy snappies from holidays and CD/DVD printing etc and has always turned out pretty good, well for me as an amateur :) Now I am thinking of the 8550 to do larger prints of Highland landscapes and of our grand daughter. This video has helped me no end with the information on rear feeding :) Now to find the best price :) Great videos Keith , keep up the good, very good work mate :)

I would love to see how it prints on 120 pound card stock! How it loads it (can it load it in the trays or does it have to go through the back as well?). I print greeting cards currently on an Epson ET-2760 and I have to manually "push" each piece of card stock in the back feeder, so it makes it a very slow process. Would love to be able to load like 25 pieces at a time and leave it to print! Thanks for this!
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 жыл бұрын
What is 120lb stock? Only the US uses this measure ;-) It depends on the thickness and stiffness of the media - you certainly can't use the internal feed tray - that's for copier paper and thin photo paper (just) You can stack a few art papers at the back (350gsm works fine) but not 25 sheets
@glowatyourownpace
@glowatyourownpace 2 жыл бұрын
@@KeithCooper Thank you for replying! Sorry, crazy American here! The paper says 325gsm if that helps (sorry, I am an amateur when it comes to all this). I understand I couldn't do like 25 at a time, but just to be able to do maybe 5 at a time and not have to "push" each one in would allow me not to have to babysit each one! I watched another one of your videos and saw that there is actual greeting card paper! I had no idea! I'm looking into that now and would love if you could recommend one that works well with he ET8500. My cards are a little smaller than A6. I basically fit two cards per one sheet of 8.5x11 paper. Thanks again! :)
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 жыл бұрын
325gsm seems to feed OK. The pre-creased cards I test with are on inkjet media and from companies here in the UK - I can't see why photo paper suppliers in the US wouldn't do them and at US sizes? The 8550 I have here seems to handle several sheets quite well, but it's something to check with any new printer. The specifications suggest it should work OK.

Keith, I've been watching your vids since recently buying a ET-8550. They've been extremely helpful. One process I'd like to try is printing on a sheet of balsa wood, 3 or 4 inches wide and 1/6" or 1/32" thick and I'm wondering if you've tried something similar other than poster board ? Keep up the great work.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks - the limitation (in the specs) is thickness. That and you'll likely need an ink receptor coating (something like ink-aid). It's actually Epson's printer, so no, I've not tried feeding wood through it ;-)

Thank you for your printer videos. One important tip for me was that quality papers can have flakes or paper dust particles that might not be noticed and should be brushed off before printing. Is a pressurized air can for dust removal acceptable as an alternative? I'm trying to decide the worse of two evils: Scratching the paper with the particles being removed as you brush them off vs propelling chemicals from a can on your expensive paper. What is your experience?
@KeithCooper

I use a feather duster for papers prone to flaking - that said it has to be a very special paper for me to put up with the problem ;-)

Keith, You are a gem I have just found. In anticipation of your full review, can you address the question of if this printer would be worthwhile to consider in addition to a P800 (which I have), p600, p700, p900? The 8558's one certain added feature is double sided printing, which you have seemingly trashed? I will be printing numerous short run, largish, double sided, multi-sheet, folded pamphlets (mostly images) soon, and double sided printing could simplify and speed things up. (Affinity Publisher PDF -- to a RIP if p800) Thanks for your excellent work, analysis, and exposition. Bill

If I was printing on paper of any quality, then DS would be a manual operation. It might be OK for very light cheap paper, but it's very much part of the 'consumer' end features on the 8550 (think office printing)

Thank you Keith for this great video. If i may ask your opinion on this....I am having a little problem with printing on 13 x 19 Epson Cold Press Bright - Textured Matte Professionnal paper with my new ET-8550. This paper is 21 mil and it does feed with the top feeder (i was watching your other video with special fine art papers). The problem i have is since this is textured paper, i can see that the rollers are making a slight groove all across the print! Do you think that feeding it from the back or selecting another paper type (card stock) might solve this problem. I also have a R2000 which did not give me this problem since it support this thickness out of the box. I normally use the R2000 for this but it's clogged and i am having trouble cleaning the heads. Bought the ET-8550 to help out in the meantime...

@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! First up, you don't need to use the cardstock media setting - the problem printing such light card is that it is rarely a media coated for inkjet use - I've had a steady stream of people asking about printing 'basic' card, and it rarely works well in _any_ printer of the sort I test. I assume you're also not using ICC profiles, so you can pick any media setting. If you use the VFA setting, it includes the pigment black in the mix and _may_ give better results on some media. The biggest problem in card printing is always the media, not the printer. Any media supplied with a weight in 'pounds' doesn't bode well in my experience - check with suppliers to see if it is coated for aqueous inkjet printing.

Thanks for the video. Recently purchased the ET-8550. If I use 300GSM + paper such as 350gsm I have two clear roller marks on the paper where it is fed through. I checked the settings and have ' thick paper' enabled in the settings but it made no difference? Is this a known issue as I was quite surprised. Additionally if I try and feed A4 through the rear slot due to the small paper feeder it's completely inaccurate on the feeding and skews by between 5-10% on the paper, even if holding - make the rear unusable for borderless a4 printing. Kevin, have you seen this at all or do I have a faulty printer? Thank you so much. Steve

Who Kevin? ;-) :-) I didn't see this with the one I tested, but I only tested large papers via the rear slot. Borderless can be problematic on many printers - it was OK on this one via the top. Thank you for your excellent videos! I've learned a lot from you. This was interesting since I've been hesitant to test Epsons Enhanced matte because Epson says it's for pigment inks (though not clearly saying it won't work with dye inks, I'm remembering couple of retailers actually does say that) but it seems to be working fine with ET-8550 that I recently purchased. Epsons Archival matte is I guess a completely different thing and for pigment inks if I'm understood correctly. One thing I've not fully understood is what are the things profile determines and what does the media type selection do. As you said the same profile gives different results on same paper if you select different media type in the options. I kinda thought the profile overrides all the information needed except print size. Does it matter what you select on the printer itself as a media type if you use Epson Print Layout and select media there. Often forgot to change it in the printer but not yet noticed any problems. Can you tell how does the built in Epson matte profile work with this or is it necessary to get custom profile for this. Well, I might anyway purchase it from you if I end up ordering some this board. Lastly, what do you think, is that board thick enough to hang by itself, I'm considering this as a budget exhibition media without framing/matting.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 жыл бұрын
Glad it's been of help - media settings and profiles are two different things. The 8550 is unusual in having a hybrid ink set - The Epson set-up does install some Epson profiles and the driver can over-ride printer settings. Have a read of the actual 8550 review where I discuss this in more detail www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ It also has links to all of my 8550 articles/videos The videos are generally produced to supplement my actual (written reviews) not replace them ;-) BTW the board can bend in humid conditions and the corners damage easily Just beware that 'budget' exhibition media can, without care in use set the tone for the images too ;-)

I also can not get my image to print to the edges of paper so if the border is off center on my 11x14 image then I can't sell them because they don't fit in a standard 16x20 matt cut out for an 11x14 or straight into an 11x14 frame. This was supposed to save me money not cost me more hassle. Any thought son how to fix this or did I just get a defective unit?

I've not seen this, it's sometimes caused by the stiffness of the card and output rollers not gripping well enough. Check also how the card is supported towards the end of the print. Yes, that's the sort of printer I was thinking of. I've looked at similar stuff when visiting Epson and Canon, but they are far too big to fit in my kitchen, for a review! ;-)

If it's a new printer and has feed problems, I would contact Epson. It what I did when one with problems turned up to review - a new printer should work...

Hi, I tried to get my ET8550 to print on 13"x60" piece of paper, but it's not recognizing the paper in the rear feed at that scale. It does find normal letter size paper when I put it in the rear feeder. I've played with the page size and margin settings with no luck. Any tips?
@owntor1
@owntor1 2 жыл бұрын
FWIW it does print at 47.25" in length.

Have you set a custom page size via the front panel? I've found this long page stuff seems to vary with drivers and the precise way it's set. Also if I remember correctly, it needed a page size of slightly less than 13" - 12.97 or the like? I don't have it here to experiment any more I'm afraid though. I'd usually suggest asking on the DPReview printing forum - just be sure to include software/system details

@@KeithCooper You have a good memory. I did set the page size on the panel. The max width it allows for user defined size is 12.95". I'll check with the forum you suggested. Thanks for the help. Happy Holidays!

Hi Keith, I have just bought the Et-8550 printer thinking it is easy to print A3 card. I want to make greeting cards etc but with at least 300gsm card and thicker if possible instead of just sticking thicker pieces on the front of my A5 or A6 card that I have printed a pic on. Mmmmm now I am having a re-think as I don't know if I would use the back much if it's difficult getting that poster board etc. I just thought you put the 300 + gsm card through that feeder at the rear feed. So would I only use the top feeder for A3 and also thicker card please? I have not put the inks in yet and not sure if change it for the ET-8500. What would you say?

I'd keep the 8550 - but I don't like small printers ;-) Have you read the actual [written] 8550 review? - it has links to all my related videos www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/

Hi - how did you get on printing on the 300gsm+ card with the 8550?
@AndriaMrs
@AndriaMrs 6 ай бұрын
Hi, well it was a lot easier than I thought. I use the top feeder (like a normal printer) but make sure you tell the printer A3 size. I only use 1 sheet at a time and it has up to now worked fine. I buy (if you are in UK) the A3 card from Hobbycraft or The Range, not expensive. I would like to try the Poster Board at the back slot feeder but am toooooo frightened lol. @@littleivory3544

off topic, can you suggest a good 13x19 satin paper? (almost like semi-gloss, but more matte, but not truly matte). tried koala brand, it's pretty decent, but the company is crap. they ship in a bubble envelope and the box gets a ding, every single time. luckily some of my prints don't take up the full 19" range, but the ones that do, i can't use their paper for that reason. they refuse to ship it in a box because they're trying to "save money".. pfft, i hate "these people"...
@KeithCooper

Koala is not a brand I'd pick - cheap comes at a cost... Where are you? In the UK I'd suggest contacting PermaJet, FotoSpeed or Paper Spectrum - all companies I've dealt with, who also supply icc profiles for many printers [essential for print quality - I won't use a supplier which doesn't offer them] In the US I've dealt with Red River - good range of papers

@@KeithCooper from the US. ebay has it 50 sheets for $32 free shipping. other brands are about 20 sheets for $50. the quality of the paper is great, but i can't get past this issue with them not boxing it :(
