I have cleaned many a Bridgeport way and adjusted plenty a gib. Never my equipment unfortunately. I would be employed by a shop and I couldn't neglect a machine. I would take a few minutes befor the next print pull the wiper covers back clean the felt and lubricate. No employer ever complained but not many guys would take the time. It's great to see a bottom up rebuild of what I would say is one of the most important machines out there in a job shop anyway. And it's great to see you back at it. Thanks

Buffy looks, as well as I can tell, to be in pretty good shape. It should make you a solid machine ready to go back to work, when you finish the rebuild. I hope I can find as good a machine to refurbish for my use in my shop. This is an interesting series of videos for me, as I love to understand how things go together and work, and how to repair them. I will happily wait for your next installment to learn more about the Bridgeport Mills, and their clones. Thank you so much for sharing, and taking the time to explain how everything goes together and works. Take Care and Stay Safe. Bob

I sometimes go back and watch some of my earlier videos. And think, i am so glad that at least that part is finished. It has been a great project. But Missions like these drag on you, especially if you don't have the time available to work on them. Glad to know you plan to pretty it all up as part of the rebuild. It’s very easy to add an oiler to that elevating screw nut as you put it back together. Just plan to run another line from your one shot oil manifold. Drill a hole right through the casting and in through the nut just like the X & Y feed screw nuts in the housing in the cross slide. That’s an excellent upgrade. Granted, I haven’t watched the rest of this series yet, so maybe you’ve done that, but I hope it helps someone else.

I think you can put the rear saddle wiper on after the saddle if you raise the knee up to where the saddle ways clear the top of the knee ways. You do have to be careful not to turn the knee screw entirely out of its nut or the first thread will get flattened from the weight and make it virtually impossible to get the screw started in the nut again.

I had to make a new Zaxis shaft when I installed my Z power feed. I also had to make the mating cog, as the kit was for a Bridge Port, and had a different cog design versus the Wells-Index, I made a new crank, and used the cog from the kit. My fun was getting the bevel gear back on the new shaft, and the keyway tightened. Real hard place to get your head into. I actually used a remote camera to see what I had to do. I'm surprised at how many chips made it past those sliding shields. The frosting scrapping looks like very little wear was done to them on the Yaxis. That's going to be a nice mill when reassembled.

For returning the knee to its track, cut 2"x4"s that fit tight and perpendicular to the inside surface. Cut two lengths and pivot them together when inside. Then toe screw two drywall fasteners to mate them and thicken the assembly, this will prevent them from rotating.
@davefontes85323 жыл бұрын
Just a thought. When I went through the knees on my two machines, I built a cover with a piece of soft aluminum, to cover the gears. The reason I had to go through the first knee, was a chip got stuck in the large gear, and the pinion gear would only turn 359 degrees.

I have always loved metalwork but life gave me dusty wood-shop (been solo running past 11 years). Two weeks ago I got myself old soviet lathe 1A616 (quite decent condition). For past two weeks I have made necessary repairs, all new electrics plus emergency switches (in soviet Russia no accidents happened), new oils and general cleaning. And now I am sitting here watching video of another fellow going through the same thing. Don´t really know why but just can´t turn my eyes away ;) And I know how woodworkers are seen in the eyes of machinist but chasing 0.2 mm (my acceptable tolerance in woodwork) error in details with length of 2000 mm is same ratio as 0.01mm to 100mm. Patting myself on the shoulder here...

I'm surprised that, given the amount of chips on the knee gears, that Bridgeport didn't put some sort of shield above the gear assembly to help redirect the chips away from the gears. Just a piece of sheet metal screwed to the casting would help a lot.

Mr Fenner, at one time in an industrial setting, had reason to review AFBMA ball bearing standards. You mentioned new bearings for the milling machine. My rolling element bearing needs were usually for nominal 1800, 3600, rpm machines. We always used AFBMA, C3, internal bearing element cleanced bearings. The C3 is a rather loser clearance than like a C9 internal ball clearenced bearing like for slower moving shafts. Slower moving shafts do not need a loser internal cleance as heat is not an issue. Of course C9 internal clearenced bearings would have more accuracy in keeping the components inperfect alignmet. Was just wondering if, the internal clearance, ball to inside, and outside race clearance was considered when buying new bearings for a highly accurate machine tool?
@KeithFenner3 жыл бұрын
I always cross refence and up grade or tighten up the clearances as needed or feel the need, like the spindle bearings.

Keith, what kind of solvent do you use in your power washer if any. If I may be so bold to recommend a solvent used in the printing industry, it's water miscible and may even be bio-degradable. Since printing ink is essentially light grease (made from soy oil) with colorant added the solvent works great on petroleum based oils and greases.

You apply for learners permit, Pass written test on line take the driving test, or E-Course offered at a price, two day training and then riding test, a pass = your license sent to you in mail.
